Health insurance. The plastic that bleeds us dry... My Effexor has a generic version now, and I won't be able to afford the Good BCBS after this year, so I am looking for intel on the generic version. Has anyone taken it? Good, bad, indifferent? I do 225mg of XR a day, my worry is that the XR piece will be diminished, since the half life of generics is the real issue. (Ie, the fexofenadine does not last 12 hrs let alone 24) Also, if any of you has seeds to the Money Tree, let me know, kthx! [;)]

Sorry I don't know Hib but I am wondering if there is a pharmacist that you can ask about the half life etc. I imagine they would know. I would probably go to one of the small privately owned pharmacies rather than one of the big chains. [:)]

Hib...most drug manufactures have a consumer hot-line. I would call the pharmacist, but also the maker of the medication.

My doctor says he thinks its okay, but yanno? I have found that most pharmacists just push that generic shit. A birth control pill I was on went generic and DANG wanna talk about side effects? Like PMS!! The generic meclizine is fine, and the generic atarax is fine. It's that the antidepressants are psychoactive drugs that has me worried. I am willing to try, of course, but cautiously. Thanks!

Hibi, I know my insurance automatically switches to generic when they are available UNLESS my doctor says he wants the original. Perhaps that is something to look into as well.

Yeah now I have to deal with a month of generic Yaz because there WAS no generic at the time the scrip was written! Hmph.

I have no experience with Effexor, but haven't noticed a significant difference in name brand vs generic zoloft. I do however, have a child I attribute to generic micronor ( erin). So, imho, ymmv- greatly.

I'm so glad I finally got off that effexor shit! It made me fat and in the end, I think it's the reason I don't have a degree in biology. I'd say get off that shit, it's no good for you, and I don't think I'm the only one to have had a bad experience with it. I haven't needed any antidepressants since then and I'm not too sure I needed to be on them long term in the first place. Those mother fuckers suck! Recently, I heard of a book on C-Span, which I would like to read, called Anatomy of an Epidemic. It's all about how the use of these medications for mental illness ends up not working out and how many times in studies when they went back to look at people that had been in earlier studies, they had been doing great, but they had been off the meds for years and years.

I don't remember ever having a problem with generic drugs, both OTC and prescription. I recently started taking generic Ambien and it's great stuff! I haven't slept this well in decades, lol.

LadyHib, I haven't had an issue with generic Wellbutrin XL and that is despite there being a lot of noise on-line about some people finding a big difference in how it works for them. I am pretty sure if there had been a notable difference my doctor would have fought for brand from the beginning. You have a couple of options if you find the generic Effexor XR does not work as well for you once your body makes the adjustment: your doctor can either submit the paperwork for a "formulary exception" requesting the real deal or he could switch you over to Prestiq (which is the active metabolite in Effexor).

Why would you say such a thing to someone who indicates that Effexor is helping them? Anti-depressants are one therapy that work diffferently for different folks, much like BP meds. As someone who finally found one that works for her, one that others made comments about like you just did, it really irks me. To the OP: I have had no problems on generic Wellbutrin or Celexa. I love them. It is not like I can tell a difference in me, yet I can tell a difference. Clear as mud huh? lol

Yanno that's true, for a while we were experimenting with adding the wellbutrin and it was the generic, no problem. My doctor says that there is no generic XR, but it is no big deal. I am reassured, and thanks to those who wrote offline! [:)] DarlingSavage, I have bad brain chemicals! Yes, I hate being fat, but I hate the idea of being essentially non functional much more. If I were diabetic, I would be taking insulin, I have serotonin problems, so I take this. I wish every day that I could throw that bottle away, believe me. Finding the right antidepressant is indeed a crapshoot. Prozac about killed me! Astounding stuff. I was in a CAR ACCIDENT and had exactly zero adrenaline response. I could have been a bomb defuser on that stuff!

I'm back to my normal self that can get depressed in response to certain occurrences, but I"m not just walking around depressed all the time. Exercise also has a lot to do with it, too.

The active ingredients in ALL generic drugs are IDENTICAL to the brand names. It is the inert ingredients that are changed by varying (always miniscule) amounts. Other than that, the dosing can sometimes change. By that I mean where the Brand may come in 5mg, 10mg, etc. The generic may also offer 7.5mg and 12mg. I had not problems with generic Effexor other than it just wasn't a good anti-depressant for me. Now I take Lexapro, and that doesn't seem to do anything either, but we aren't changing it just yet because we are tryng to get the dosing on all the other meds working correctly. Things like half life and pharmacokenetics (probably got that one wrong) must be identical by law. However, your body could react differently and your doctor should be made aware so he can adjust the dosing. As I said, when there is a problem with a generic it is typically the inert ingredients. In my case, it is the inert ingredients in the Brand Percocet that I can't tolerate, so I always have to have the generic. All in all you shouldn't have any problems. I will say this about the small pharmacies vs. the large chains. Small pharmacies charge a lot more for everything. I use the Rite Aid Pharmacy that we have here in my town. I don't know if they are available where you are. Both the pharmacists and all 4 pharmacy techs know me by name, have never been too busy to answer my questions and when I move in the near future (if I ever find a place), I hope to be able to stay within the area so I don't need to change pharmacies. I'm that pleased with how I am treated there.

Thanks everyone for your help! I feel a lot better about using the generics, should I have to change insurances. When I didn't have the prescription coverage I did the price hunt and wound up a the Kmart pharmacy many years ago, and never left. They know me by face/name and have NEVER made a mistake with any of my scrips. Our local Rite Aid FAILS big time! It's all in the staff that they have! DarlingSavage, I will be the first to say that antidepressants and other psychoactives are over prescribed. It only took four of what they used to call "nervous breakdowns" to get me to start trying meds in the first place. There is a world of difference between situational depression and what I have. I miss myself, a lot. I miss being smart, and quick witted, and THIN and energetic. It's the price I pay for functionality.

I don't know why I didn't mention it in my other post, but you do know that Walmart does $4 prescriptions and there are anti-depressants on the list, right? The list is available on line at their site. You should print it and bring it with you to the doctor. Not just for the anti-depressants, but so he can use the 4 dollar list whenever possible.

Yeah I know!! Can you believe that there is NOTHING on that list that anyone in my house takes!! I do keep checking though, because YOU NEVER KNOW!! My parents are over 65, so with the hell of medicare and their "not on the formulary" BS that their insurance company gives us, we are always on the lookout for bargains.
