Toppingfrmbottom -> Which is better in terms of cooling, a portable AC or the window unit types of AC? (7/11/2010 5:47:58 PM)

I can do either or, however due to the portable AC needing a smaller hole in the wall than a window unit, and yes it'd be put in the wall, I am leaning towards a portable unit.

However I don't want to get a portable if its performance is less superior to a window unit.

Why not go to a store where they sell these things, or google some units so you can get the specs and customer reviews?

I think they are over priced.   You get more for the money to get a window unit.  the new ones are lighter and quieter too.

Kytten I've looked at units in stores, and I have looked at reviews online, but they really don't or have not so far, helped me in which one is more efficient as far as how well they cool.

PA, t hey can be over priced, yes, However, they're handy if you can't spare a hole in the wall, put it in a window, or if where you CAN put it is to far away from where you want it.

If I am not mistaken, their efficiency is based on the space of what you are cooling.

Yes, the BTU. The bigger the room, the more BTU, you need, and similar with the smaller the room the  less BTU.

I wonder, if however, being portable has any affect on how well it performs, outside of the BTU.

the portables= you will have to empty the water in them.

Again...I am kinda certain a question like that is better served for someone that has experience in AC units and such.

juliaoceania -> RE: Which is better in terms of cooling, a portable AC or the window unit types of AC? (7/11/2010 6:11:51 PM)

Because they are do-it-yourself questions... stuff like one would find on wikihow or yahoo answers, but you ask us like we are good friends, and I just like it....

You could also consider a dehumidifier- and or a good fan- or a ceiling fan.

I am just that friendly:)

I never thought of it, but I could call up the local HomeDepot, and ask them.

And of course if money wasn't an issue, could always try both out, if one didn't work as well as one had hoped lol.

I really like the idea of a portable so far, since it needs a smaller hole and can go where I want it, not where it will fit.

Hi,

We have a portable that is used to cool the garage for the dogs.  It does an admirable job.  You just need to make sure the area you want to cool is well sealed, near a window for venting out hot air and that you remember to empty the condensation chamber.   We empty ours in the evening, every day if we use the unit, it's water that builds up and drains into this little cup.

I like the portable unit, because of just that..it's portable.  A window unit requires something to steady it if you place it in a window, plus those kits are hard to get the seal perfectly air tight.  If you knock a hole in the wall, then if for any reason you move, theres a hole in your wall, lol

A standard two car garage is kept quite cool with the portable unit, we made sure the two doors had good seals on the bottom and the window is double paned.

Hope that helps!

Pa, I have yet to see a fan that can stand up to the heat in here, it's a bitch in the summer. I mean above and beyond the whew oh god it's summer, hot, I mean like someone turned on an oven and shoved you in hot.

I do want an over all fan, that goes in the attic and circulates air, that would, I have been told help some with the heat, and getting air flow, but I don't know about things like dehumidifiers.

It does, thank you.

How did you go about making sure the garage was sealed up well?

I know our little garage isn't sealed very well, in the winter, you can feel cold air coming in from under the big wooden  door.

--ok- right now- I have a fan in the attic.  A regular fan blowing out of the vent.  All I do is plug it in.   It blows the hots air out of the attic.

At times it works alot.

I figure it does 1 or 2 degrees on average.

DaddysInkedSlut -> RE: Which is better in terms of cooling, a portable AC or the window unit types of AC? (7/11/2010 6:34:31 PM)

I have had both the protable units and the window units. For me there was no difference in how they cooled the area it was about space for me. I prefer the window units b/c I didnt have alot of floor space at the time and I had at least 2 windows in every room. The window unity I had last summer, cooled my entire apartment. It had a thermastate, timer, ect so it wasn't constantly running. The windows in that apartment were horrible I could litterly fit my hand through the gaps between the panes due to how they were installed so I used the winterizing plastic sheets to seal them year round. It sucked b/c I couldnt open the window but it kept the heat in in the winter and the cool air in the summer in. They also make plastic strips that go at the bottom of doors to keep the draft ect from coming in and they are rather inexpensive.

Money wise I personally wouldn't buy a new AC this time of year go to your local pawn shop 1st you will get a 30 day warranty typically and pay half the price as from a retail store and if you want a new unit wait til the end of summer when they go on clearance. Then you have 2 units for next summer. lol
