MoonHead:
Why should anyone apologize, except John Kerry. He gets no applauds or kudos for doing what he is required to do as a Commonwealth of Massachusetts resident.  He tried to evade paying taxes here and is now ponying up. Partially because of the media frenzy, but I heard today < sorry I don't have a link > that if his primary residence is in Massachusetts, which it is, and he births it here, which he is does, he owes the Commonwealth the money.

He claims his yacht is undergoing maintainence in Newport at the moment. Hmmmm, betcha there are a few Massachusetts boat companies that could have done that and bring income into his own state, his own constituents. I don't care if it was one person that benefited from it, it would be one more person in the state he represents.

Marini:
for me : The hoopla is not that he bought a 7M dollar yacht, but that he is docking it in RI and avoiding his share of the tax burden. As I said earlier.

Well, point of order, boatbuilding may be dying, but I searched Mass and nowhere do they build boats in the class of boat under discussion.

I don't know if these guys are talking out there butt or not, but Massachusetts shipbuilders say they could have done the job. And employed hundreds of people for two years.

Who gives a shit?  It's not his personal responsibility to make sure that every one of his own dollars goes into the pocket of a Massachusetts resident.  He's a dick for (among other reasons) trying to screw the state out of the taxes due, but come on now, you're straying into serious tinfoil land with this.

HardHum -> RE: Should your U.S. Senator own a $7 M Yacht? (7/27/2010 5:11:27 PM)

Of course he should have a 7 million dollar yacht. This man is responsible for your personal freedom. A freedom so vast that foreigners who exist outside of the glow of John Kerry actually hate you. I don't think our leaders are worthy of anything less than the very best. Distractions like this only inhibit the Kerry liberty shower and are resented by freedom lovers everywhere.

***BREAKING***!!!
John "Live-Shot" Kerry has announced that he is "reaching out" to the Dept of Renenue of Massachusetts and paying the tax due on his yacht!

So you'll be apologising for the whole thread until you can find something else he's done to whine about, then?

Do you folks over there apologize to your criminals once they have been caught? He broke the law, got caught and now has to pay up. What is to apologize for?

No Stef, not tinfoil land, but John Kerry land.

Listen carefully to Kerrys' words particulalry about buying cars and investing money in the US vs elsewhere.

and have a peek at some legislation he is quite proud of, from his own website:

Last Congress, I introduced S. 2775, the Fair Share Act of 2008 which was enacted as part of the Heroes Earnings Assistance and Relief Tax Act of 2008 (P.L. 110-245). This legislation ends the practice of U.S. defense contractors setting up sham corporations in tax havens in order to avoid their share of Social Security and Medicare taxes.
In addition, I introduced S. 2199, the Offshore Deferred Compensation Reform Act of 2007, which ends the practice of hedge fund managers and corporate CEOs from deferring unlimited amounts of compensation offshore. This legislation closes an inequity in the tax code which allows U.S.-based hedge fund managers who operate offshore investment funds to defer unlimited amounts of compensation offshore while most Americans are limited to the amount of income that they can defer in a retirement account.

Who gives a shit ? many of his constituents. We live in a state that is losing companies, industry and alot of talented citizens at an alarming rate due to our taxes. And John Kerry campaigned on " fixing " this for us and bringing more jobs to Mass.

OK... so what if it a "con" sport...

You're giving Kerry a pass?

And ah... it's their money.

More like you give cons a pass. Never heard you perk up before about how the wealthy avoid taxes.

Want to take a guess at how much tax money corporate America avoids paying w/ offshore mailing addresses?

Find out and post that amount and we`ll let you climb out of your hypocrisy,lad.

But I am not a liberal... I would have done the same thing Kerry did, like I said earlier.

But your silence speaks volumes

Thats ME not MA.  Now, if the thing you're driving at is American buying, throw away your brazilian shoes, go to Lynn or Brockton and get those plants running.  Toss away your korean shirts and your skirts and go to Fall River, or Malden or Lowell and get your fabrics there, open those plants..........see what I mean?   Toss out your nikes, your sonys, your prada, your..........

Everybody is guilty of this, if indeed its hypocrisy.

Besides, by the standards of this post I might ask about the Republican originated..... govt. funded bonuses on wall street

you might ask about them, but the silence in response would be deafening. They dont exist.

They most certainly do exist. It was Bush & Paulsen (Goldman-Sachs) who designed TARP complete with no prohibitions on bonuses.

Plain for all to see, wall street and that so-called liberal [sic] culture of dependency and sense of entitlement came through...'we, the US taxpayer owed them their bonuses' and from what would be otherwise a bankrupt co.

(billions in bonuses were owed to wall street yet the auto workers could go to hell) What values we have hey ?

This is really all about their culture of money and greed.

OK but before I do... how exactly is that part of the discussion of the Senior US Senator from Massachusetts, skirting he own state’s tax laws to avoid sending desperately needed revenue into the general fund?

It's the culture of money and greed. So Kerry is to be embarrassed by avoiding a yacht tax when avoiding taxes is a mutli-billion dollar industry ? Hell, his wife 'earns' over $5 million a year TAX FREE on munies.

This whole post is a microscopic view of our culture of money and greed and thus nothing more than cheap partisan hypocrisy.

Ron:

Osterville is in MA, not ME. The " two years, hundreds employed" was said by a Maine-iac. I just figured that the Osterville guy concurs with the Maine guy and it takes about the same time and manpower for any shipbuilder.
Misleading or mispoken on my part.

As for buying American: I am not the one up there spouting off that if taxes were cut and the American people had more money there is no guarentee that they would buy or invest in American made products/companies. And using that excuse as a reason to not lower taxes.Or to mock those who have said, lowering taxes would stimulate the economy.

Go to Fall River shopping ? ohh Ron, I would love to. I use to love going to all the mills and doing my Christmas shopping. That's where I got the bulk of my linens n things. Just like my own city < Attleboro/Paddleboro > used to be the jewelry capitol and now they are all gone too, save a couple of smaller businesses. Thomas Wolfe was right. You can't go home again.

It`s the wifes money.

Tho some will throw digs at McGramps,it`s McGrama`s money made him loose count of how many homes he(they) owned.

You are getting kinda old to be throwing out McGramps as an insult. Maybe you could check out the local jr high and see if they can't come up with something better.

If it was his money you crybabies might have a point.

But it isn`t and you don`t.

The money comes from his wife and republican,Teresa Heinz.

What difference does it make if it's his money or his wifes?

What difference does it make if she's a republican or democrat?

Oh wait, I forgot, it makes all the difference in the world to you, because you're a bigot. Maybe you should quit projecting your bias onto others.

Owner59 -> RE: Should your U.S. Senator own a $7 M Yacht? (7/30/2010 7:33:45 AM)

maybemaybenot -> RE: Should your U.S. Senator own a $7 M Yacht? (7/30/2010 7:45:09 AM)

Awww, c'mon Owner !

Do I really have to give up the Lea and Perrins ? It's only a buck or two.
What am I going to use in my Bloody Mary's ?
This is not good news, maybe I should re consider my stand on Kerry and the yacht saga.
hmmmmmmmmm...[8|]

True,but that money might be going to fund terrorists......[8D]

Think about it.[:D]

mnottertail -> RE: Should your U.S. Senator own a $7 M Yacht? (7/30/2010 7:58:34 AM)

Yeah, but wouldn't it make more sense to run the money thru Tedeschis?

(Mass joke).
