My friend was looking into having the bypass surgery done and I went with her to the orientation as her 'support partner' because the program requird that everyone who was undertaking the surgery have one. During the orienttion, they discussed the screening process. This not only included a pyschiatric exam and therapy, but everyone who was approved for the sugery had to first quit smoking, join a healthclub and lose a certain number of pounds (dependant on the indivual) and show that they were capable of losing some weight before getting the approval and scheduling the date for the operation. The support system and follow through was impressively extensive. My friend chose not to participate. I think she was ok with the surgery, but had no intention of giving up her cigarette habit. Anyway, the weight loss surgery is NOT an easy way out. It still requires dedication, commitment and support. I still don't think it is the best option, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a bad idea for those seriouslyl needing to lose weight for health reasons.
