Madame4a -> RE: Weightloss Surgery (7/29/2010 5:16:12 PM)

I decided to come back to this... weight loss surgery, once the surgeon has done the job and the surgery is technically a sucess, is largely patient driven.

switchingcrone -> RE: Weightloss Surgery (7/29/2010 7:44:14 PM)

Congratulations Madame4a! Please allow your sucess to be an inspiration to others.
200 is about how much I want to lose. It still won't get me to "ideal" weight but I could be very comfortable in my own body at that weight. I have NEVER acheived "ideal weight" and dont expect too.

tazzygirl -> RE: Weightloss Surgery (7/29/2010 7:58:12 PM)

I didnt mean adipose tissue, i meant things such as a fatty liver. On the outside, people look healthy, slim, with just maybe a few nips and tucks. But the inside is still a mess.

And my opinions are not based upon opinions, but medical fact. Having spoken to some of the best surgeons in the south on this topic, including the top notch cardiologists in Charlotte that my son continues to see, as well as researching the topic extensively as both a mother and a nurse, i do believe my information is a bit more indepth than just "opinion"

Madame4a -> RE: Weightloss Surgery (7/29/2010 8:10:18 PM)

Have you had the surgery?

If you'd like, I'd be happy to let you tak to my surgeon and my GP about the health of my organs and particularly my liver... and in the end, overall... I am still much healthier than I would be heavier.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Weightloss Surgery (7/29/2010 8:11:54 PM)

Until you get your eating and emotional problems under control, the surgery won't do diddly to help with weight loss as long as emotional eating is in the picture..

Sadly, I have identified my eating issue as emotional/Stress eating.

Madame, reading my post would have resulted in you not asking a redundant question that had already been answered.

Madame4a -> RE: Weightloss Surgery (7/30/2010 4:12:11 AM)

Funnily enough... I can't figure out why you won't directly answer the question.  I just reread what you wrote and I'll just make an assumption, because I didn't want to assume before.  I'm a dolt, I suppose.

For everyone else, yes, its not a magic bullet, yes, diet and exercise works best, but this helps.  Yes, you do need to get into a good program where you get support for WHY you eat.. again, this helps... you don't do it in a vaccum.

My my, testy over this, arent you.

You do what you have to do and you dont bark at people that point out the pittfalls along the way.

Listen Miss "whats the point".
Since when can you determine whos barking from a few sentences? Could you hear my tone? Meh, I dont think so.

Actually.. most of what you've said about the years of build up of fat isn't true... many people who have various weight loss surgeries are in fact healthy...

I'm not sure why you have this huge bias, but I don't have the fat build up you mention... I had my surgery... lost over 200 pounds.. and I've maintained my weight give or take ten pounds for 8 years now.. I'm much healthier than I was... for very obese people.. its a wonderful life changing AND lengthening procedure... have you had it?  If not.. I'd suggest you temper your opinons, not based in fact.. .ok?

edited to add... if you want to talk about it Switchingcrone.. I'm happy to share through messages...

Madame4a, just wanted to say congrats, that is an awesome success story![:)].

myotherself -> RE: Weightloss Surgery (7/30/2010 5:39:26 AM)

You missed my point and made the assumption that i am saying this type of surgery isnt worth it. Thats not at all what i said, or what i am indicating.

I have NOT had the surgery, my son has. Which is what i said in my previous post. I am also an RN who asked the questions, demanded the answers, and dug until i felt comfortable for what my son with a severe cardiac condition was about to go through. I weighed the risks and benefits, consulted with many, and simply shared the knowledge that while the body may, on the outside, look great, years of bad eating habits still lurk within.

IF you have no lingering damage, then good for you! That isnt the majority of the cases.

As a VERY Big BBW I am considering Lapband surgery in the near future. I am aware this will affect many aspects of my life, however I would like to know if any of the others have had this procedure and how its has impacted their BDSM time negative or positively. I appreaciate any willingness to share your experiances.

Just wishing you the best of luck [:)]

It is also a quality of life issue, Taz.

tazzygirl -> RE: Weightloss Surgery (7/30/2010 11:03:09 AM)

For my son, Holly, it was a life or death issue.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Weightloss Surgery (7/30/2010 3:21:30 PM)

This is such a hard decision. I have two friends who ate their way around their surgeries (this was pre lap band, they did stomach stapling) and one had a horrible time healing the skin removal surgery. A colleague just got the surgery less than a year ago, and is happy with the results. A petite friend went from a size 24 to a size 4, years ago, and is still tiny.

The real issue is KEEPING that weight off. We do gain fat proportionally, and the fat around your internal organs will go away along with other fatty tissue, and the benefits of not having your heart work extra, and your JOINTS carry extra are just tremendous. Type II diabetes can be resolved, high blood pressure... there are just a lot of good reasons to NOT be obese. Still, it's a change of LIFESTYLE, not just a matter of snipsnip and you will be thin in a year!

Good luck, and I hope you get the help you need! A support system is vital.

Crone, I'm likely going to get flamed for this, but I would not consider weight loss surgery as anything except a single facet of a full program.  For example, do you have emotional issues that led to the weight gain and how do you plan to deal with them?

I 100% agree with that, apart from the fact that any weight loss surgery should be the truly last resort because it is so damned dangerous, a friend of mine had serious obesity problems due to medial issues (thyroid and hysterectomy) and I went with her to a lot of the meetings as sort of moral support since her hubby had left her for a slimmer model. A few people were happy with the surgery short term, long term there were a lot of not so positive side effects, some of them seem to be more dangerous than obesity.

I can't imagine that anybody takes the surgery lightly, but I would hope that they get all the information that is available for them, not just what the doctors tell them but also talk to lots of people who had the surgery and ask them how it affected their lives.

You'll find a host of information at the Obesity Help forum. From a pain perspective, it's my understanding that the down time is far less for the LapBand versus the Gastric Bypass. It is a noninvasive procedure that's usually done in the office or a surgical facility. I would expect some discomfort but nothing along the lines that the other option provides. The website mentioned would give you greater details and a variety of experiences to draw from. Best of luck.
