I've noticed that women aren't generally as forthcoming about this subject as men are. I rarely encounter women that will admit their interest or preference for a handsome partner. I'm uncertain if this hinges on the idea of being perceived as shallow, but it would seem we're pretty tight lipped about it for the most part.

While I understand this, it doesn't work that way for a woman. So the question turns out to be more of why do men use tactics for getting a woman that aren't based on what women respond to? Why do men persist in looking at things through the eye of the pursuer (themselves) and not the prey (women)? If a man isn't looking for another man I'd say he'd do better and be more successful if he'd think more of what entices a woman...not himself.
