Rep. Bob Inglis (R-S.C.) says he knows firsthand the risky business of refusing to call President Obama a "socialist" from his primary election defeat earlier this summer.

Inglis was quoted reflecting back on his loss by the New York Daily News on Monday.

"I figured out early in the race I was taking a risk by being unwilling to call the President a socialist," explained the outgoing congressman. "I'd get asked a question and they'd all wait to see if I'd use the word - socialist - they were throwing around. I wouldn't. Because I don't think that's what he is."

Inglis elaborated, "To call him a socialist is to demean the office and stir up a passion that we need to be calming, rather than constantly stirring up."
The criticism is only the latest in a string of recent shots fired by the South Carolina Republican at members of his party since failing in his re-election bid.

"I think that to some extent, we're getting what we deserve," he said last month of GOP efforts to appease the conservative wing of the party. "We have basically decided to stir up a base and that's a bad decision for the country. Because the country needs people here serving in Washington to say, 'listen let's lead and let's help people understand.'"

Bravo Mr Inglis. It's sad that simply *not* calling names is enough to impress these days, but I'm still impressed.

I'd say the electorate:
1. Wants the truth.
2. Is tired of RINOs.

Another incumbent bites the dust.

As well he should if he does not represent his voters. That's the bottom line.

What if the voters are more interested in a monkey spectacle than genuine issues?

That's democracy for ya.

RacerJim -> RE: GOP Rep. "I Refused To Call Obama 'A Socialist' And I Lost" (8/10/2010 8:35:31 AM)

What's truely sad is that calling politicians what their background, actions, words and close friends/associates leave no doubt as to what they are is considered "bashing" by some. I.e., truth hurts.

It's become quite clear that 53% of the voters in 2008 were bamboozled by a snake oil salesman.

You're asking what if? Have you not been aware of politics in the last 20 years?

It has been nothing but.

And you think this is a good thing? That a sensible incumbent gets voted out "as well he should" for not playing into the spectacle the public wants??

And, who puts the incumbent in office? That same public, who apparently, do not believe the issue at hand to be a spectacle. Just because it is to you, doesn't make it so to them. Go vote for your sensible incumbent. Leave their decision as to sensibilities, to them. It is why they have a representative.

Your position, to them, is probably as idiotic and ill informed as you believe theirs to be.

It isn't my place to decide for them, nor yours. It is supposedly reflective of the freedoms we have in America, that we can believe what we choose to believe regardless of whether another section of the country does or not.

Either way, if incumbent is not representing his or her voters, incumbent should be looking for another job. It is, after all, why he or she is actually elected - or rather, that's supposed to be why he or she is elected.

slvemike4u -> RE: GOP Rep. "I Refused To Call Obama 'A Socialist' And I Lost" (8/10/2010 9:25:56 AM)

The American Conservative Union graded Inglis out at 93% lifetime....now I don't care how you are keeping score...93% of anything is pretty fucking good. But not good enough for neo-cons...their demand is for nothing less than 100% fidelity to their dogma as evidenced by this vote and truckin's characterization of Inglis as a Rino.....yep the message is damm clear to all other Republican candidates....toe the party line in all things or money and opponents will appear as if by magic.Wasn't it Franklin who said something akin to the people get what the people deserve as far as governance is concerned.
Let's hope whoever said that was fucking wrong.....otherwise we are screwed.

Archer -> RE: GOP Rep. "I Refused To Call Obama 'A Socialist' And I Lost" (8/10/2010 9:26:50 AM)

Sorry but Inglis forgot to mention that the big issue he was voted out on was the fact that he voted for the 2008 bail outs. The Socialist name calling bit was nothing compared to the fact that his voting record showed he voted FOR TARP.

I don't think it's a politician's job to be a simple representative, I think they have a responsibility to lead as well. There's a tightrope to walk between winning the votes of certain segments of the population and using your office to better those people rather than wallow in the mud with them.

IIRC it was the National Guard that desegregated schools in the Southern US, not the will of the people. Extreme rhetorical examples aside, I find it disturbing that you say that the past 20 years of politics have been more spectacle than substance, then go on to defend that by saying it's what the people want.

On one level, I get what you're saying, the people do get to choose what they want to happen in the US.

On another level? I find "the people's" desire for spectacle repulsive, I would say they deserve whatever they get except that Congressmen are able to vote on bills that affect the entire country, not just the idiots who elected them.

No doubt it's a big nasty messy machine and it's absolutely foolish to think a democratic government could possibly be anything other than a reflection of the people, but it still bothers me that simply hearing the buzzword "socialist" is enough to influence the votes of people who probably can't explain what socialism is, much less why they're against it.

It's blurry, but the sign says "keep the guvmint out of my medicare."

Most republicans voted for the bush bail outs.

Does anyone want to consider what would have happened if GM was not bailed out?

That 100,000 jobs lost a month could have just kept going and going till we were in a depression.

What this man is really talking about is the deviding GOP.Something teabaggers deny but can`t be hidden.

they would have reorganized, renegotiated their contracts and they and the country would be in a lot better shape.

Any other questions?

Whiplashsmile4 -> RE: GOP Rep. "I Refused To Call Obama 'A Socialist' And I Lost" (8/10/2010 4:05:22 PM)

I find it hysterical that anybody would believe for a moment that Obama is a Socialist. Calling him a Socialist is a bit like calling a Wolf in sheep's clothing a sheep.

Sanity -> RE: GOP Rep. "I Refused To Call Obama 'A Socialist' And I Lost" (8/10/2010 4:10:16 PM)

Why doesnt anyone want to admit that hes a socialist?

Of course hes a socialist. Hes dumb as a box of rocks and cant move his agenda even with both houses of congress in his pocket, but that fact doesnt make him any less radical.
