The former. He's from Nevada, isn't he?

Time poll says 61% oppose this Mosque.

And it's at times like this that you realise the government/state is there for a very good reason......and you realise that in some ways Hobbes was right in his view that people are far more dangerous than the state....

And then you have Libertarianism.....give 'em some credit for optimism....although I'm not sure whence it came....perhaps they've been rubbing weed into their toast or something....because some of the people really do need a government to keep them under control......

Hey now... we Libertarians with a " L " <vs an "l "> have a use for government.

And we would never waste good weed by rubbing it on our toast ! [8D]

Moon, yep. I was thinking S Dakota, my confusion.

Reid is the Powerful democrat from Nevada who thinks the Mosque should be moved. So he's neither Fox or Mid West.

I dont feel the mosque is an injustice to anyone. Nor do i imply that.

My point was .. and still is... simple.

You feel that people dont have a right to feel offended by the placement of the mosque.

In colonial days, many felt that abolitionists didnt have the right to feel offended over the ownership of blacks because they were, after all, merely property.

In the same aspect, abolitionists didnt understand the offended feelings of the slave owners when they complained about being told what they could and could not do with property.

Men in the victoria era didnt understand the complaints by women. The sufferage movement was based upon the offended feelings related to women. Men believed women should have been happy with being taken care of all the time.

Offended feelings have caused major changes in our society. They have caused wars, healed wounds, and brought about massive social changes.

I think your insistence on how to overcome those feelings is way off course.

No. Just no.

Neither of those movements was based on "sensitivity" or "being offended." They were based on human rights, justice, and equality. If women tried to get the vote using nothing more than "not letting women vote is terribly insensitive, I know the law says you don't have to let me vote but I really do think you should be sensitive to my feelings about this matter" like people are doing with this they'd rightly have been laughed at.

And you're wrong. I think people DO have the right to feel offended by this. I just don't see how it's in their best interest to refuse to try to work past those feelings.

So your neighbor's dog tears up your prize winning roses,  Which can not be replanted in your rear garden due to cost and soil changes.  The neigbor decides to plant lilies (the neighbor's favorite, not necessarily yours) along his fenced edge of your torn up garden.  do you:
a:  smile and praise your neighbor for the lovely garden that is developing?
          b.  wonder why the dog has not yet been put down or leashed?
          c.  hope for a drought?
          d.  plant kibble in the lily garden hoping to entice the dog into a repeat performance?
e,  smile and nod, and go on with your life?

First I would talk to the neighbor about having my roses replaced, to see if he's amenable to a solution. If he's not, and it's something I really want done, I'd take him to small claims court because he's likely liable for the damages since his pet destroyed my property...which by the way is where your analogy breaks down because the Imam heading this mosque project is in no way liable for damages done on 9/11.

After that? Yeah, I'd smile, nod and go on with my life. I mean what do you want me to say? That my neighbor and I should hate each other and I should try to intervene so he can't have nice things?

I don't want to be that sort of person. It can't be fun.

Well....yeah....but it's fair to say that without a government these sort of sentiments would mutate into coercion...and the sort of chaos of the 17th century. Credit where it's due......the government isn't advocating preventing individual enterprise.....and..what would happen without the protection of the government and judicial process? The petty minded would have a field day....and indulge in the sort of spiteful violence that would give certain people a certain amount of warped pleasure....so yeah Hobbes had a point.....to an extent......

Admirable......just smear the weed onto the face in a haphazard fashion.....in the interest of efficiency....

And where's Obama on this?
He should just come out and say; "You're not building that mosque there against the wishes of the majority of the American People, move on and build it somewhere else!"
It seems like he constantly goes against the wishes of "The People."

The majority of American people would also like to make 250.000.00 a year.

The majority of American people would like to drive really nice cars.

The majority of American people couldn;t tell the difference between the preamble to the Constitution and the Communist Manifesto.

The GREAT state of California has for years let the people vote on such a wide variety of issues they are going broke faster than ever.

The majority of American people often think with their hearts and not their heads.

That's what REPRESENTATIONAL government and leaders are about.

The majority of the American people can get their heads out of their asses and effect change if they wanted.

Maybe tomorrow, tonight they have to watch American Idol.

In both cases, it started with a feeling that they were being treated as less than human in spite of the social belief that some were less than human, and some were less than men. Recall at the time blacks were seen as nothing close to human... and women still arent considered, by some, as being equal to a man.

As far as your comment about being insensitive to the rights of women to vote... if it werent for some men believing women had the right to vote, women never would have won that right. The same with blacks freedom or their right to vote.

Now, remember that when i say the following... no one is listening to those who feel this mosque doesnt belong. They are all basically being told to "get over it". Is anyone actually listening to those people? Maybe they are wrong in their belief that the mosque should not be built... but it is their belief. Who is helping them to overcome their issues? They are being told its there, like it or not. Well, they dont like it.. now what? Are their cries to be remembered in all of this to be ignored?

Jeffff -> RE: How to overcome being easily offended (9/13/2010 4:26:21 PM)

Incidently Sanity.....

The American People elected Al Gore.

Why won't anyone listen to the American People?

You are making my head hurt. I don't get the point of these comparisons. This isn't really a human rights issue. The hurt feelings are not about an ongoing injustice, they're about a past hurt. The suffragettes and abolitionists weren't in mourning, they were protesting and fighting civil wars.

What are you trying to say with these analogies?

I recommend a trained grief counselor. They know how to listen, as well as help people overcome the pain of loss.

Only if you declare the Constitution and the USSC is invalid. Which puts you in the corner of a round room with some other "posters".

Heck, even Gore certified that Bush won.

I thought conservatives supported states' rights.

Or does that only apply when it is convenient?

tazzygirl -> RE: How to overcome being easily offended (9/13/2010 4:55:58 PM)

Im saying that every movement began with a belief. Right or wrong, just or unjust, they all had their start that way. And people had to be convinced. Just as these people have to be convinced about the "center".

To tell anyone to overcome their "easily offended" feelings is just insensitive as hell.

luckydawg -> RE: How to overcome being easily offended (9/13/2010 4:57:17 PM)

No, you are advertising your ignorance again.

Every Conservative I ever met supports the US Constitution and USSC.

I certainly do.

Even If I disagree with a specific ruling, they are what makes law.

Hey, own up to your OP.

You believe these people are easily offended. I think they are offended over a huge issue.

Not all of us are cold hearted bastards/bitches ya know. [;)]
