Gymkhana: Auto Racing at it's wildest

This is one insane motorsport that I would enjoy seeing live (at least once)....watch close at 2:30 and his last maneuver

That is pretty amazing. Scary, dizzy.

That guy has handling skills.

And that video makes drifting look tame.

But that car makes the most annoying exhaust noise I've heard in awhile.

Edit: I was wondering how those tires lasted that long but I watched it again and they didn't.
That last part is the wiring or the rims making sparks.

The whole paternal side of my family was heavily into driving and building cars, but not on this level. We were never pros, we did it for our own self satisfaction. However I have quite a bit of experience on the subject. I mean family photos almost always had a car in them, and when Grampa got his movie camera what did he film ? drag races between the cousins. Stunt driving was one of the fun things we did also. Our Mothers always had this impending sense of doom whenever they heard that rumble of a car starting up in the driveway.

As such I can tell you that car in the video is very specially equipped, including but not limited to indepenently controlled brakes. It probably also sports a very specially designed differential case, drivable to make one wheel turn in reverse but I wouldn't swear by it. More than likely it has four wheel drive with reversible torque at least on the front drive. The tires are probably special low traction rubber, which makes it tail out more on turns, which can be hard to handle. For effect I would say it has fuel injectors in the exhaust system.

Don't get me wrong, this takes nothing away from the skill level of the driver, not only in sheer driving ability but to be able to handle all these special features. I'd say it approaches the skill level required to pilot an aircraft. This guy is good. He has more of that kind of blood in him than any three of "us". Driving down the road sideways is a piece of cake, but this guy takes the cake, really.

Flying would have been my next step and I almost joined the USAF, but found that I didn't have good enough eyesight to be a pilot and scratched the idea. I could've taken it up on my own, bu there would be little if any chance that I would be alive today to talk about it. Even driving it was a good thing that we were pretty much immortal until we were in our late twenties.

And of course we wreck everything. After watching a video like that the discussion would ensue about all the special equipment required and of course, how to incorporate it into our machines. In other words, many can just enjoy the show, but not us. Oh well.

Those days are over, I haven't even done 90MPH in over three years. Now I must go sulk somewhere, for now I remember how old I am.

Yeah, I figured it was specially-equipped too.

That sure isn't a Honda Civic.

Although I've seen some Saudi drifting videos with just regular front-wheel drive Toyottas on public streets.

No, there aren't "indepenently controlled brakes" on that, or any other, Gymkhana car.  There's a brake pedal and the e-brake.  That's it.

Yeah, I wouldn't swear by that either.

They haven't yet released a spec list for his new 2011 Ford Fiesta, but his last car (GK2) was an AWD Subaru WRX STi with a Motec SDC that allowed the front-to-rear differential power mapping to be changed but it didn't have any reversible torque.

The tires are a special compound version of the BF Goodrich G-Force T/W KDW.

I doubt it.

Indeed you are.  You can hear it whining in the videos.

Didn't realize those cars had specific specs. My comment on the brakes was due to the fact that I didn't see enough speed of rotation to offset the forward propulsion during the spins. Sure I could be wrong, but like has been said, it is no Honda Civic.

Actually I wouldn't mind seeing just what kinds of special equipment it actually has. My assumptions were simply drawn from what I saw. Is such information actually available. In fact don't answer that, I'll see if I can find it. I will be bored sooner or later. Might prove interesting.

I don't believe the specs to the GK3 car have been revealed yet but GK2's specs are here.

Exactly!
When I read the op, I was having images of someone doing timed jumps in a car.

But as for the video, I am not a car person, they bore the crap out of me, but ... OMG THAT WAS AWESOME!
I have to wonder though, how many tries it took to get it right, or even if the video is made from several different tries.
And the guy on the little scottery thingy must have balls of steel.

Hmmm, one thing I never did was to drive on two wheels. I wonder if my JIMMY will do it.
