Does anyone here have experience with the condition known as Peyronie's Disease?  Did the plaque dissolve on its own, or was it surgically removed?  If surgery was involved, what were the complications?

My husband finally went to see a doctor to have his condition documented.  She told him that since 10 months had already passed, with no improvement, he would probably need surgery.  He is diabetic, which will increase any complications.  My fear is that with one mistake "it" will never work again...we are still quite young.  Are my fears unfounded?

Any input, or insight, is greatly appreciated.  ~~mb

There is information at the Mayo Clinic site:
"...When men seek treatment, they should wait 12 to 18 months before any surgical procedures are performed. Surgery is not successful if it is done during an active phase of the disease."

Also, has he been on any medications for it? There are some.
"Some oral medications may help with Peyronie's disease, including Vitamin E and drugs that decrease swelling. When these do not solve the problem, another option is to inject a drug into the plaque to try to dissolve it."

http://www.mayoclinic.org/peyronies-disease/treatment.html

This seems to be in line with what other websites were saying.

It is progressive, and as far as i know, irreversible.   It can be surgically fixed - basically, what the surgeon does is an incision much like a circumcision, pulls the skin down and puts in stitches into the tissue under the skin to straighten the penis out.   I've been in on a few of these, and it seems to work well.

There isn't any reason why surgery should inhibit erections.  Actually, diabetes by itself sometimes does a good job of that, so if he smokes or drinks excessively he needs to quit if he wants to keep having intercourse. On the other hand, there are certainly different things to help with erections - up to and including penile prosthesis's.

Complications of surgery would be the usual - infection, loss of sensitivity (very rare since the surgeon isn't interfering with nerves), death - also very rare.  He would swell up like a poisoned pup and would take  about a week for the swelling to go down. Basically, it would be like having a circumcision - which for an adult isn't desperately comfortable, but eminently survivable.

Thank you for taking the time to respond!  I have done a lot of reading on the condition.  That's why I'm looking for personal experience.

Angelika...The meds have not shown a good success rate, therefore not even offered by his doctor.  They will watch it for a few months before making a final decision about surgery, but with no major changes in the past several months, they are not optimistic about it dissolving on it's own.

Kiwi...I know you have some experience with diabetes, and hoped you would respond.  The main problem we are seeing is that instead of simply forming a band on top, his is on the underside and appears to have woven through the vessels, nerves, etc.  Luckily, drinking and smoking are not issues.  The biggest concern is his ability to heal (and perform) afterward.  Both our anxiety levels are through the roof!  I am even considering waiting to see if anti-depressants will help with my peri-menopause, because they increase my sex drive.  Have you run into many who experience ED after the surgery?  I think that's his biggest fear...that my sex drive will go haywire, and his will just...go.

The information I read didn't suggest that spontaneous remission was a likely possibility either. The Mayo Clinic info regarding surgery timetables seems to differ quite a bit with that of his urologist.

He talked to the doctor about the different options we have read about, but she doesn't feel any are a viable treatment for him.  They are looking at surgery sooner, than later, due to the location and severity of the bend and pain.  Unfortunately, his has formed on the underside, which makes things a bit trickier for removal.  A "magical pill" sure would be nice sometimes.

When it first happened, and we discovered most trauma-related plaque formations would dissolve on their own, I constantly kidded him about it.  Boy, am I eating my words now.
