Anybody else participating?
http://www.nanowrimo.org/

If you are, do you have a plan?  Are you writing an outline?  Doing research?  Setting a space up?  Working with another person or group?

I'm participating.

best,
sunshine

I've toyed with the idea for a few years, but this is the first year I'm planning on making a real attempt.

I've planned a little bit--I've got a basic plot outline and a few characters who are becoming less and less vague-- but that's about it for now. I'm hoping that the flurry of writing will push me past some writer's block and that I'll get to meet some new people through the write-ins in my area.

Have you tried it before?

Hi sunshine,

I've never done NaNo. I've known a lot of people who have done it, though. It gives them the sort of structure/freedom/no edit they need.

I won't. I got a contract for my new erotica, and my first edit is due to the editor on Monday. My editor hopes to get all of the final production edits done before Thanksgiving. (Yay, Carina press, an electronic book imprint of Harlequin, is publishing my next BDSM story.)

January

yay January!!!  Good on you!

Ignited - no, this is my first year doing it.  I'm kind of nervous about the time table because I have 4 other major projects I'm working on as well.  But I figure it will at least get me going.  I have about 80 pages of a book already, and I've been doing gobs of research on a huge chunk of my story.  I have the outline / story, but I need the background portion which has me reading about diseases, archeology, medicinal plants, and some political history.  I even went out and bought the book  Maeve Binchy's Writing Club (I think that's the name).  I heard from Bones from Ash that it has a lot of good pointers, so when I'm on the bus or subway and can't really focus but want to read, I use that!

I think I'm going to buy the little stickers or patches that go with the project.  Just for fun, you know?

best,
sunshine

sunshine,

Are you writing a thriller? Your novel sounds really cool: archeology and medicinal plants and politics! Wow!

No, it's historical fiction  (and sadly not the sexy Diana Gabaldon / Philipa Gregory kind).  But a couple of people have read it and spoken highly of it when it was a short story.  Oh no, sunshine (says both of them)... this is a novel!  Since it's set in history, I need to have my facts correct.  And can I tell you?  I know more about certain diseases than I ever thought was possible.

I'll tell you though, I do have another story that I've been outlining.  The lady.... *cue the music*  gets away with murder.  I've got a few pages on it and some character outline a bit.  And you know the funny thing is... I've been thinking of it for months - I knew who my heroine was modeled after, but I needed the guy, the one who she becomes friends with.... and I found him just this week!   I am feeling torn between the two stories.  Ah well.  They will tell me who to focus on.  I trust that completely.

best,
sunshine

sunshine,

I know the feeling of having different stories battling for supremacy. I just sent off my edits of the BDSM novella this morning, so I'll have a little time before the next round of edits to work on a different thing.

I'll get back to a thriller novel I've been working on for years. It's kind of a science/mystical thriller in the vein of Dan Brown. No sex, except for the one sentence variety... "and then they had comfort sex..." Tons of research. I had to make up an ancient secret society involved in drugs. That's why I am so fascinated that your plot involves medicinal plants!

Then after a chapter or two on the thriller, I'll resume work on a cyberpunk erotic novella I've outlined, and hope to have finished by February. I think I might make it a menage story. I won't be doing any research for that one... husband would object.

January

Wow January - you have such diversity in your writing!  That's wonderful (and awe-inspiring).

I've been loving the idea of very quirky people as my characters.  My writers group is very "character driven" while I'm more plot driven.  I like stuff to happen.  I like when the person can be Jane Anywomon or the John Q. Public (where did that come from anyway?).

I have heard that some folks are going to start writing at 12:01 on the first.  I won't since it's a school night, but I will get to cracking that day!

ooo... 5 days.... YAY!

Greetings sunshine,

I toyed with the idea earlier this year when I was heavily involved with the writing community, but I doubt if I'll join this year, perhaps the next. Nonetheless I wanted to wish you luck and hope the experience has a positive outcome for you!

Namaste,

~porcelaine

I am!! This is my fourth year (or fifth?) and I am excited. This year one of my daughters is writing too. I write fantasy, and this year I am writing a novel that is very loosely based on the legend of St. Brendan :) I love to write but November is really the only time I set aside blocks of time to do nothing else :) I skate by in my job (normally I have a lot of prep work in the evenings), make the hubby and kids fend for themselves a lot, and drink copious amounts of coffee and get very little sleep. It's FUN!!

Greetings January,

That's totally neat! I'll have to steal it for next year's event. I'm curious if you (and the others) prepare ahead of time or simply allow spontaneity to take over instead? And best of luck to you and everyone else!

Namaste,

~porcelaine

I'm not participating, but a few of my friends are. This month I plan to focus on editing two works I hope to get published.  My stories are about a male threesome in a D/s relationship. I'm looking for writing buddies, people to read draft chapters, etc. Here's a link to my ebook. It includes parts of two chapters of a longer manuscript (in progress).  Scroll down to "The Name Game".  http://bookworld.editme.com/Free-Gay-Ebooks-2. BTW, someone else designed the cover.

This is my first post at Collarme, so hello, everyone!

Hey there porcelaine - that's actually why I started this thread!

For me, I've done a bunch of research - and I continue to as time passes through the event.  I have scheduled times to meet with my writing group, but I also spend time in front of my computer at home, alone.  I put on appropriate music based on the setting (I laughed when I saw Diane Keaton's character playing French music in that movie with Jack Nicholson where she was a playwrite - I laughed because it looked just like me... sitting at a computer, sobbing, music playing! )  Even when I meet with my group, I take my ipod.  They're never sure whether to disturb me, but I don't mind.  We will share what we are writing, and we get feedback from each other if we choose.

Anyone who has ever given a spontaneous party knows that the best ones are the ones where the pantry is full, the bar is well-stocked, and you have some good music to hook into.  Spontaneity needs planning to some degree in order to get the most out of it.

I also find I need a pretty tidy space to write in, so I will clean my writing space if I have a logjam or something.  Cup of coffee (morning) or a cup of tea (afternoon/evening) and I'm good to go.

Speaking of... time to go and write!

Best wishes to all,
sunshine

I've been struggling this year. I never have before, but this year I'm actually deconstructing my 'baby' -- the world that I created for my first and 2nd published novels -- to re-create the story, the world, and everything. I lost my previous publishers to the economy, so I got a new publisher who wants a complete re-write of the series, from the ground up... and I keep getting hung up in what I've already done. I hope that, this week, I'll be able to pull my head out of my tuchus and get some serious words on the page. I got another 2000 out between 2 and 4 am this morning... so I hope the rest of the day will be that productive.

Calla

I'm a planner -- in fact, this year, I'm reconstructing my very first published world, so I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 900 pages of worldbuilding (that's not writing -- that's just information about the world and its peoples). Plus, for the very first time, I have a sketched-out timeline/progress-line for the direction of the story. This is at the behest of my new editor, who is like a bloody ENGLISH teacher -- she wants to see every scrap of "prep work" before she'll consider the submission "completed"... it's making me much more organized as a writer, though -- my characters aren't going off on quite so many tangents this time around.

Calla,

Speaking of world-building, did you know steampunk (erotica, romance and just plain steampunk) is really hot now? Given that you live a steampunk life and have tons of cred, you should consider whipping off a quick novella!

I can give you some links to some great electronic publishers who are looking if you are interested.

Can you provide links to your other published works--are they SF or fantasy? Did you get your rights back?

January

January,

Yeah, steampunk is really big, and if I didn't have a February deadline for 350,000 words, I'd be writing a Steampunk/Fetish piece for NaNo this year. *chuckles* That being said, don't be surprised if one comes out in the next year or so -- I have a tentative offer from a publisher on a 175,000 word +/- piece -- I'll be sending off the 3-chapter preview around August, if everything stays on schedule.

My old works are not out for publication ATM, even though the rights reverted when my old publishers went under.  However, my new publisher is buying a re-vamp of the world, so I agreed not to re-release my older pieces. I'll be looking for readers for this new piece at the beginning of the year, though -- I try to have a half dozen people read through it before I do the final edit -- I find that, for myself, I'm blind to some of the less workable aspects of my pieces, so having outside voices makes all the difference in the world. You can message me on the other side if you're interested. My genre is basically Sci-Fi... or Speculative Fiction as I prefer to call it... because it's more -soft- science, since I tend to gravitate towards the anthropological/xenopological stuff rather than hard-science.

As an aside -- for those who are writing, what are your thoughts on new publishing models. I'm starting to gravitate towards throwing in with the "new media" publishers, and I'm curious what other authors are thinking about some of the new publishing models that are options now.

Calla

Hi everybody!  5 days to go!

I have only 2500 words left... And I gotta say these last 5,000 are killing me.  I'm not ready to add a WHOLE new scene, but I think I might have to to get the words... and I don't want it to be weird - I want it to make sense.  I'm adding descriptors at this point, and noodling with it.  That's the easy part.  But I"ve noodled with pretty much all of it.  Now ... yep ... another scene is going to have to appear.  Perseverance!
