Exclaim!

In a social setting I don't mind sharing my age so much, but in a business environment I do try to be professional. I would never ask a client's age because it's not relevant - they need my services, I need the business, and age has nothing to do with it. I do get asked my age because I am young and look it, and I do tend to deflect. If I offer past clients as references and show finished product from past projects as examples, I have some kind of credibility. If I share my age, even though nothing about the situation has changed, I am taken less seriously - more like a kid running a sidewalk lemonade stand than a young adult paying rent and bills with money earned through a personally owned and run LLC. They think, 'awwww, she even has business cards - how cute!' My age can be a serious deterrent to finding and keeping new customers.
When I'm making friends or flirting, I'm pretty honest about it and I expect the same. If you're 35, please don't try to tell me you're 29. Eventually it will come out and lying about something so simple and relatively unimportant is a serious deal-killer for me.

Ah focus... still here I see, still got your head up your ass I see, still spouting bollox I see... no I didn't miss ya

Not going to get into Our old sparring at the moment, frankly not got time to give You the ass-kickings You deserve. Chances are that real life thing might be about to get even busier in the very near future.

But just because you are invested in looking down on people because they might be young (Maybe You should look to find things to feel good about yourself about other than having survived this long without somebody strangling you) doesn't mean they ccan all justifiably be tarred with the same brush. Try visiting a place with a decent population, meeting people, including young folk... sure I find MOST of them a waste of oxygen, BUT there are plenty of surprisingly mature ones out here, likely more sorted than either of Us where at the same age... Well OK likely more sorted than you where... or are

That'll have to do You for your 'fix' ... I know you missed ME so *blows Focus a kiss* I am back to popping in from time to time again currently so I'm sure We'll cross swords a little... when did We ever not do so when We are both around

i think there must be a lot of young people, like myself, that are here to find out more about this and do decide if it really is for them, and if you are upfront and honest about that theres no problem
i wouldn't like to think that some of the older, more experienced members of the site somehow think we're less entitled to be here just because of age

Im sorry rachel, I didnt see your post until now. I dont look to age as a measuring guide. Its all about attitude. There are just as many 50 year olds who need to "grow up" as there are 20 year olds. And, to be honest, I give the 20 year olds more leeway.

And here I was.......just wandering around........catching up on the CM forums. Read the above bolded example of age for an old fart........ The I realized I will BE 50 FUCKING YEARS OLD IN LESS THAT 2 FUCKING YEARS!!!!!!!!!!

Now I am going to have to .......cringing here.........GROW UP!!!!!!!

No, no, no.........growing up is fine. Keeping a fresh, interested and curious attitude to life is what keeps people *young at heart*. And in any case, I've just had my 53rd birthday and 48yrs is YOUNG I tell you!

At the Folk Group I belong to( I play banjo) there's a couple who are both in their 80's and they are fabulously young. The chap flirts with me and his wife says that she just *has the wrong body on*....lol  He's an IT whizz, and she teaches people to swim. They're remarkable in their outlook on life, funny and great company.

Old is where your head is.

One has to feel sympathy for some of those contributing to this thread; if they don’t rise to your barbed comments and general aggression then you start crowing, and if they do then you condescendingly mock them for being “unwise”. Seems they can’t win either way.

Reading back over your comments, most especially:
quote:

ORIGINAL: Focus50

Crikey Raven, how can you live to your age and know so very little beyond attacking the messenger (OP) with populist, politically correct cliches' ("knee-jerk ageist OP") for daring to ask a valid question??
Anyone who thinks today's teenagers are any more wise, mature or responsible than teenagers of any other generation is a delusional fop who needs to get out of his basement more often and visit the real world.

... the conclusion (other than the fact that you seem to have a worrying habit of generalising to the point of obfuscation) seems to be that you don’t believe that sensible people, faced with information, can (it's not automatic that they actually do, of course) assimilate that information and put it to good use – it’s not that the current generation are inherently smarter or more wise, but simply that, in many cases, they’re better informed. Obviously, this doesn't make them geniuses, because wisdom is something a person can develop, but often doesn't (and that's not entirely dependent on age), and similarly it doesn't make them all inherently right, because not all of them learn the right lesson from the right knowledge, especially as that knowledge isn't itself always 100% correct. But in terms of being able to be more knowledgeable at a much younger age then yes, I do still believe that the young have a much better chance of success in their endeavours in this respect than someone of our generation did when we were younger. And, crucially, that they are far less likely to hurt themselves, or others, in the learning process.

In addition, your habit of alternating aggression and/or veiled (or, indeed, actual) insults with “what did I do?/why do you take this personally?” lines will also not lost on anyone (young or old) with even a rudimentary knowledge of basic psychology or social skills. You belittle the opinions of others (often with generalisations so sweeping that they make me wince) and then, when they seek to defend themselves, you cry foul and claim they're “insecure” or "defensive". It’s a very tired NetDebate cliché, and most sensible folk abandoned its use somewhere around the start of the 21st century. If you want a mature debate then have a mature debate. If you want to sling mud then sling mud. But don’t flip-flop between the two and expect anyone with an ounce of sense to respect you.

Ahhh Watson, up for another round, I see. And you've been polishing the vocabulary - some might think that a predictable defense mechanism; a "tell". Not me but (RapierFugue - "Fortunately, I'm not that insecure"), just sayin'....

A few points re your conclusions.

Raven and I have several years history of barbed by-play on CM. It's good natured no matter what the drive-by ignorant might conclude within a particular moment.

I've stated several times in this thread that my comments are intentionally generalised as I'm commenting on an overall generation (the ME Generation), and not individuals. Of course there are exceptions within every generalisation but I find it rather bemusing at how acceptible it apparently is to cite that one in one hundred exception as evidence the opposite is proved. And everyone nods.... Reminds me of a certain signature line.

It takes more than the availability of information for someone to assimilate or put to good use. Sound decisions and choices aren't based just on information or intelligence. Experience, for eg, and good ol horse sense... The kinda things you're not born with and can't be taught or learnt from books or google.

And the only "flip-flopping" I've done is when I've needed to respond to individuals in this thread because they've wrongly taken my deliberately generalised comments as a personal sleight. And you, too; what's your real motive in engaging me?

Focus.

No, I'm done with you.

Until the next time you "bring your own special brand of insight and wisdom to the debate"/"spout bullshit"*, of course.

I suspect I'll need a stopwatch, rather than a calendar, to measure that interval.

Just FYI... Focus an I have long understood the 'rules' of Our little 'dance', regardless of any other faults folks may think We have neither of Us take ourselves THAT seriously, not each other. And the Guys has a sense of humour almost as warped as My Own. We rarely agree on anything, nothing new there with almost everyone and Focus, but We understand it doesn't matter if We agree or not, the important stuff happens OUT THERE, not on here.

That's the nearest You are getting to a compliment from Me, Focus you old tart, make the most of it

I wasn't referencing any exchange between you two in my comments, on the off-chance you were wondering. It was merely what I'd observed previously, and what he demonstrated once again in his reply to me.

As I said though, I'm not especially interested in trying to debate that sort of person; once I've pointed out the inaccuracies and inconsistencies in their argument it’s usually not worth the trouble from there on in, as things often become impolite from that point on.

This one usually sums it up for me ...

http://xkcd.com/386/

Edited to add: by which I mean, it's a waste of time arguing beyond the initial exchanges, unless there's a genuine debate going on.

But, but, but...., I'm barely warmed up - and you're tossing in the towel ALREADY????

Has "Sherlock" not treated you with the same respect with which *you* engaged?

Perhaps you just need another two weeks to refresh and recharge... :)

Tis high praise indeed....

Though we both know you really only duck back to CM to reference my posts so as to correct what you're doing wrong in the real world of D/s.

Be well old man.

I wasn't referencing any exchange between you two in my comments, on the off-chance you were wondering.

So we'll just ignore the part where you quoted my direct reply to Raven?

quote:

The "sort of person" you've been unable to get the better of? I hear ya - you're a "big fish; small pond" kinda guy, ay?

quote:

Edited to add: by which I mean, it's a waste of time arguing beyond the initial exchanges, unless there's a genuine debate going on.

Or the likelihood of digging yourself out of the hole you made for yourself with dignity intact. Defiant indignance will hafta do....

Hooroo...

And now on topic...

Every generation since the "Greatest Generation" gets progressively worse for varying reasons. There are outliers obviously but when you have the lowest common denominators of society having a dozen kids while responsible people have two, the gene pool gets dirtier and dirtier. What we end up having is a culture where the most wildly popular art is the likes of Twilight and Ke$ha, ignorance is admired, and kids wear pants several sizes larger than their waists.

The one good thing about my age range on CM and FL, is that we're less keen on the entire joke of an idea of "BDSM LYFESTYLE: SRS BIZNESS" and are here mostly for the pants tightening/moistening pleasure it brings and are mostly open and honest about it... even if sometimes unsafe due to inexperience (which'll happen with the old farts too).

I sincerely hope there aren't enough girls here with granddaddy issues that eighty is EVER going in to twenty.

If & when I get to that age, if I'm still throwing it down then I simply won't advertise a number. The power of my sheer awesomeness will be enough to answer any questions along age lines.

I feel that I've explored my sexuality enough to find that I'm submissive, and turned on by dominant man who will discipline me. I'm also a very giving, and enjoy helping with some domestic things, as well as pampering my man. That latter part is embedded in my culture, and kind of comes naturally. I wouldn't have it any other way.
