AlwaysLisa -> There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.... (11/11/2010 11:08:42 AM)

I realize alot of this is in uncharted waters and purely speculation, but I wonder if this has been thought through.    Our state is starting to end unemployment benefits, the federal aid is running out in April of 2011.   They notified those receiving payments of this fact and advised them to contact the local unemployment office for help in securing a job.

Some have been out of work for over a year and not for lack of looking.  The domino effect is frightening.   Thousands having any sort of financial aid cut off, with no safety net.  Homes will go into foreclosure, without income I don't see anyone renting, so they will live in cars?  Or on the street?

Without employment paychecks, there is no SS being paid, no property taxes  collected as homes sit in foreclosure, and with each family on the street, charity org's are stretched to capacity.

Where we live, the jobs all but cease during winter months, not that it's been real great during the summer.  I don't have answers and I realize the country cannot continue to support people, but there has to be a better way then to pull the rug out from families who are barely making ends meet now.

It reminds me of the old lady and the fly...

There was a proposal before the Senate, called S3706, Americans Want to Work Act to assist the 99ers was filibustered at the end of September by Senator George LeMieux (R-FL), citing deficit concerns.

Just one article of many. People are already using their cars as houses. And, you are right. It is set to get worse.

It is a shame that those who really need assistance are losing it.  However, there are a great many who have been abusing the system... people who can work... who could work... yet refuse to simply because they are already getting paid to sit at home and play on the internet.

There are jobs out there.  They aren't glamorous, they aren't high paying, and some actually do require some effort.  There are even some companies out there who would love to find some people who actually want to work.  Sure, a lot of them can't pay premium wages and provide all sorts of benefits, but they often can offer stability and room to move up.

I've met too many people who just aren't willing to put in the time and effort to find and work for whatever pay they can get.  And just as many who'd rather suffer in anonymity at home on unemployment than be publicly humiliated by taking a lesser job than the last they had.

Bravo Treasure!

Spoken like a true conservative.

The problem really is so many lazy people who don't want to work.  [8|]

It is not true; USA is still one of the richest countries on Earth. The government just needs to collect taxes and make cuts in less important areas.

I think this is a misunderstanding of the situation. There are jobs, but there are no net jobs. It comes down to a competition between the individuals that is a different problem. The same number of people stays unemployed. Steady unemployment means no net job creation. High steady unemployment means decrease in wages. Long term unemployed become very uncompetitive.    Also, the job creation today is in a very narrow range of professions. With high unemployment no experience in these areas means no job. If a teacher applies for a janitor job he/she will not get it. Even people who retrain themselves do not get available jobs (no experience). Things are really bad in some areas.

AlwaysLisa -> RE: There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.... (11/11/2010 12:55:22 PM)

I have seen the opposite.  Those who lost 6 figure jobs, working at almost minimum wage, just for benefits.   There may be jobs out there, but employers are picking and chosing.  I'm sure people have abused the system, there are deadbeats everywhere, just look at the 3rd and 4th generation welfare families.   I was talking about people who were doing everything in their power and still, find themselves unemployed.

Our neighbor lost his job at Boeing.   He had a company car, expense account and for those luxuries, he often worked 60 hours a week.  His wife told me he couldn't get hired at McDonalds due to his background, they figured he would leave as soon as a better job came along.   Not everyone is milking the system, not all jobs are available to every applicant.  Some are "over qualified".  We live in apple country, it's not that out of work middle aged men don't want to pick apples...the orchards won't hire them.

I agree wholeheartedly, let those who abuse the system go live in their cars...but I know, personally, there are an aweful lot of good people who would do anything offered to them, regardless of pay.  Like I said, I don't know how, but there should be something we could do for the honest to goodness seekers.

Ex-fucking-scuse me, but why should I have to suffer a 2 & 1/2 to three dollar an hour pay cut, just to do 40 fucking hours of drone work, when my last job paid me 11.80 an hour for drone work? You really think my bills get paid if I lose 100 to 120 bucks a week?

If the company is not willing to go 10 to 10.50 an hour for me to start why should I waste their and my time? $10.50  would cover the bills, but you find me any job that will hire a 52 year old for that money.  The employer would rather pay 8.50 or 9.00 to some fucking surly 20 year old that has no incentive to actually do you know WORK.

Louve00 -> RE: There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.... (11/11/2010 1:54:26 PM)

Lisa, I couldn't agree more.  When Sacramento had their tent city going though (people who lost their job, their house and was forced to live in a tent with all their worldly possessions) they made those people scram because they were "unsightly".  For people with little to no resources to begin with...living from paycheck to paycheck...it doesn't take much.  When the whole state is in that position.  No, I wouldn't imagine jobs to be in abundance in that state or area.  Some people can't fathom the problem because they're not in that position or, who knows, maybe they feel more eased at conscience if they tell themselves there are people who can't get help because there are too many other people abusing the system.

It's a said, sorry situation.  I, like you, don't know what the answer is.  But if cynicism is the only reason these people can't get help, all I can say is karma is a bitch and it'll catch up with them.  Of course, that mentality doesn't help the guy who lost his house last week because he lost his job three months ago.  But I doubt a whole nation of people are quitting their jobs on purpose to collect unemployment and have fun on the internet.  [8|]

tazzygirl -> RE: There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.... (11/11/2010 2:00:13 PM)

The situation is only getting worse.

Unemployment benefits benefit the out of work people. They also benefit businesses and the government.

Then you have to consider the fact that many of these displaced workers are ex-workers of businesses making massive profits still.

15 million people, estimated, will be affected just before christmas.

Not only will that hurt those collecting, it will also hurt businesses.

A vicious cycle.

There are very few doing that, Im sure. The problem isnt people quitting jobs, its that it is very easy to get accustomed to not having to get up, take a shower, commute to a job and put in a days work, when the pay isnt much more than unemployment. And the more UEBs are extended the more you encourage people to not look until the last minute, and hope for another extension.

We've come out of every other economic downturn without extending UEBs and without mass starvation and people living on the streets. We'll come out of this one too. There is no way to tell the "slackers" from the "earnest job seekers", so a bright line has to be drawn in the form of an end to benefits. To do anything else is to believe that there is an entitlement to food and shelter for anyone who doesnt feel like working.

There were generations of adults who learned the importance of saving and living within your means in the great depression. Many of them were able to pass that lesson on, but many weren't. Those who didnt listen are paying the price now, and the earnest are being dragged down with them. Its a cruel world, but they too will survive it.

Dont people have to look for work to be eligible for these benefits?

AlwaysLisa -> RE: There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.... (11/11/2010 2:10:22 PM)

Yup.  and depending on what tier they are on, the unemployment office monitors it closely.   When I was on unemployment, they did contact a business I listed to confirm I had applied.

Unemployment was never meant to be sole support, hopefully something can be done before thousands of home owners are forced into cars, which does the economy no good whatsoever.

Yes, but how often and enforcement is lax in most areas. some juridsdictions dont even require you to interview for any job that doesnt pay as much or close to your last job.

Make them come to the unemployment office for interviews 5 days a week and sit there 8 hours a day to get benefits. Give them lunch for free.

See how many find other jobs quickly.

Yes I do and that is how I know what the job market is.  No one wants to hire you if you're over 50 and pay you a living wage ($10.00an hour or better), they'd much rather give a dollar and a half an hour less to some undependable 20 to 25 year old.  They can fire the 20-something with no guilt, and probably little fear of any repercussions.  They need to actually "justify" firing someone like me, and if it is "unjustified" they know a person my age might know employment law as well as they do.  So they avoid that whole situation by flat out not hiring me, they do though take my applications just to keep from appearing to age discriminate.

How much is enough? Isn't 99 weeks of free government money enough for you people?

And don't give me that bullshit that "they paid into the system." Because if they got out what they alone paid in, they would have run out of funds in two months.

In February both Lowes and Home Depot hire a bunch of people for seasonal work, and I know for a fact that A, They pay a minimum of $9 an hour for Cashiers, and B, If you have skill, they'll not only hire you on a permanent basis, but will negotiate salary requirements.

If you can't wait that long, I'd suggest you find an apron, white paper hat, and a spatula, and memorize the line,,,"Would you like our trans-fat free fries with that?"

tazzygirl -> RE: There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.... (11/11/2010 3:01:52 PM)

Free government money?

do you even know who pays into that system?

Re-reading your post, i can see that you dont. Employers pay into the unemployment system. Not employees, not the government.
