I don't use traditional shampoo either. I use Wen, which doesn't have any sulfates and such, so it doesn't strip the hair. My hair is red and long (almost to my waist), and I shed a fair amount. But I always have a nice, full head of hair. Master loves to yank on it and pull it and run his hands through it, and there isn't any real 'breakage'. I think perhaps your girl is just overly worried. I'm a bit of a freak about my hair's condition as well, so I know her mindset. But eventually, you have to just go with the flow.
