As I said before, rule, I have tried a number of strategies to deal with the situation, not all of them as successful as others (see OP). Inevitably, fighting fire with fire was going to lead to accusations of hypocrisy. But context is all important, and as I have previously said, the threads those quotes were lifted from are there for all to see. You can judge on the partial evidence provided here if you choose - it's entirely up to you.

I guess I ought to pay attention more. [:-]

I actually am a girl in RL. But not here.

But at least you used the word 'bullying' - although that could be an accident, I guess. So basically, your vote is for the 'Yes' camp - it is acceptable to call names and insult people? That being the case, I guess I can feel just fine about my own responses to being insulted?

You are reading between the lines again, hertz. Don't. Reading between the lines causes nearly all of you problems. Simply don't.

I am not going to dredge up drowned cows from any ditch.

My offer for counsel pertains to new posts that bother you and that you have not yet responded to.

Oldie but a goodie...Hertz also strikes me as the type that would peek. Only because he is weak and a complete pud. Really has much more to do with being a pud.

At least he announced the block. Protocol is very important.

Seriously... why announce it? I've reported people. I've blocked people. I don't think I've ever told anyone who and when though.

Please explain to me why you are doing this, how it's working out for you and if it's getting you the desired results.

ETA - A few times after people sent abusive PMs I told people I was blocking them from the PMs. But, at least to me, that's different that on the boards since that isn't simply one person to another. You're announcing to everyone.

Think back to grade school. Telling someone privately that you weren't going to invite them to your birthday party wasn't nearly as hurtful as telling them in front of everyone.

Unfortunately when a presumably adult does it, it makes them seem no older emotionally than the elementary aged child I used for example.

I believe that explains why you would do it, DesFP...

domiguy -> RE: Name-calling - forbidden, or fun? (12/5/2010 8:14:02 AM)

No. It pretty much explainedwhy you did it as well.

It is why everyone does it. They have to be dramatic. It's not enough just to block someone but you have to announce it to the world.

"I banged Katylied in the ASS." I could have just kept that to myself.

KatyLied -> RE: Name-calling - forbidden, or fun? (12/5/2010 8:38:30 AM)

I still have butt hurt.  But I'm not gonna whine about it on a message board.  Although I may block Jefff, because he is mean.

Jeffff -> RE: Name-calling - forbidden, or fun? (12/5/2010 8:48:01 AM)

You will not break me!

It's the most wonderful time of the year
With the kids jingle belling
And everyone telling you "Be of good cheer"
It's the most wonderful time of the year
It's the hap-happiest season of all
With those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings
When friends come to call
It's the hap- happiest season of all

There'll be parties for hosting
Marshmallows for toasting

SCREEEEEEEEEECH!

Don't be a Marshmallow hertz

ANNNNNNNNND SING!

And caroling out in the snow
There'll be scary ghost stories
And tales of the glories of
Christmases long, long ago

It's the most wonderful time of the year
There'll be much mistltoeing
And hearts will be glowing
When love ones are near
It's the most wonderful time of the year

Yes Vagina, there is a Sado Claws.

All this angst over namecalling in the politics forum? REALLY? I've never understood why anyone goes there at all. Every time I venture over there (in a moment of insanity), all I see is grown people calling each other names. I can't take any of it seriously when someone (or lots of someones) choose that as their method of communication. Maybe we need my old debate teacher to come in and rap some knuckles with a ruler.

I occasionally post there, when I see a glaring inaccuracy (or sometimes I have a question as it pertains to the US political system), but I know what you mean. It's all so black-and-white, and usually totally delineated on party lines.

Republican: Blah.

Democrat: Blah blah.

Rep: BLAH!

Dem: BLAH BLAH!

Rep: BLAH-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH!! HA!!

Dem: BLAH-DE-FUCKING-BLAH-DE-BLAH-DE-NAZI-BLAH!!! HA-HA-HA!!!

Rep: BLAH-YOU-LIBERAL-ASSHOLE-BLAH!!!!

Dem: BLAH-YOU-FACIST-SHITHEAD-BLAH-DE-BLAH-BLAH!!!!!

etc etc, ad infinitum. It's not what I call debate. Mind you, very little of what I see on CM forums is, political or not.

Aneirin -> RE: Name-calling - forbidden, or fun? (12/5/2010 10:52:33 AM)

Er, I failed at this before, but how does one block and ignore a poster beyond closing one's eyes when coming up on a post that they have made ?

But for Hertz to understand, any internet community is made up of many kinds of people which is worth bearing in mind are not always sincere and honest in what they write. Together with that there are just the antagonists who come online to stroke their ego, the things they go on about they may not believe themselves but are lost in the fun they are having in upsetting others, perhaps others they might not even be able to look in the eye in real life.

Forums provide a platform for the down trodden and the weasels in life, hey, come across a weasel, imagine that weasel in their real life and laugh, it helps, but to counter insults, don't respond like with like, stick to your own moral code, either ignore or at best try and lure them into a corner where they end up shooting themselves in the foot, for not only will you see it, but everyone else looking in as well.

I think threatening to reort people makes one sound like a tattler. It brings on a whole grade school vibe.

And being a whiny douche by repeatedly posting "I reported you" further compounds that.  If you're being seriously offended by what complete strangers say online then maybe it's time to get off the net for a while.

~stef

Just FYI, stef, I have never threatened to report anyone. If I think someone needs reporting, then I hit the report button and tell them what have done. Because you have just called me a 'whiny douche', and the last four encounters I have had with you have all been about you calling me names (I don't believe we have had an interaction where you have not called me a name), you'll be delighted to hear that I have just reported you again.

I think we all know why this thread has been started. The thread starter ran into some trouble with some posters on one of the many threads about Israel. There has been something of a campaign to prevent others using the term “anti-Semitic” by pro-Palestinians. Whilst I myself would urge caution in using such terms in any debate, it is nonetheless right for some ideas to be represented as “hateful” because as we all know some ideas possess that very feature. I think such a thing is essential for if those defending other peoples from vicious accusations do not have this right then opposing opinions have an advantage for it is always harder to disprove lies or fabrications than advance them. If anyone posts vicious opinions about a people (not necessarily about Jews BTW) it should be the right of others to state categorically that those views are hateful or designed to inspire hate. Any accuser should be able to justify those opinions to a reasonable degree so that such words don’t become an impediment to debate but other than that I don’t see the problem with using such words. Forums are there to facilitate discussion and so there should be a very good reason to delete any posts that reflect normal discourse.

Much hay was made by others like Anerin on here when I characterised the ideas of the thread starter a particular way which I won’t repeat here to spare us any further controversy. I didn’t say he was of a given persuasion but I stated that the idea itself was problematic, and I justified said response with care. The thread starter then responded by calling me a racist and a bigot repeatedly. The former should be unobjectionable to him whilst the latter should be objectionable if the opening thread concerning the criticism of opinions rather than members is to be accepted but he has double-standards. As far as I can recall he did in fact threaten others with reporting on the now deleted Gaza flotilla thread and the Nuclear Iran thread over name calling and yet he name calls. He called me and others dumb-asses just the other day. He does this repeatedly (including strong swear words) but has reported others for using sometimes milder words like “idiot” as he did to DCWoody in this old thread I hit upon by accident http://www.collarchat.com/m_3443100/mpage_1/tm.htm – if name calling is to be treated seriously by mods it should not be used as a weapon to silence opposition, especially over real legitimate debate.
