I think you should stop accurately identifying another poster.

So often, those who indulge in the most bullying and insulting are often the first to cry "foul" when someone gives them both barrels back.

IIRC there's a technical/psychological term for it but I can't recall what it is.

It's always nice to know when I've reduced a girl* to a dribbling wreck [;)]

*assuming you are a girl - one can never be sure around here. Oh the mistakes I've made ... I referred to someone posting hugely aggressively (but intelligently) as a "sound chap" (or similar) once, and when it turned out he was a she, she got exceedingly miffed at me. Me pointing out that it was good she didn’t have penis envy didn’t go down well either ... sometimes, when in a hole, you just have to stop digging, and bail.

Is it important?

It is to me as the answer may affect my model of the human mind. It is to you as all personality traits derive from the structure of the mind. Did not you say that you are who you are, if I recall correctly? If so, if you are who you are, then such is pertinent to being or not being extremely sensitive.

The question suggests that the problem lies with me, rather than with the people who are deliberately choosing to relate to me with insults and names.

You are unwarrantably surmising or speculating, filling in the voids of the unknown by your own insecurities and distrustful imaginings. It may work for you, creating you own perception of reality in this way, but it can never be an accurate reflection of genuine reality. Instead of uselessly and fruitlessly and even damagingly worrying and speculating, possibly for an extended time, about all possible consequences and implications of my question (or that of any other person), you might simply have matter of factly said Yes, No, or It ain't your business and be done with the issue in a second. In this case you are completely wrong, for my only interest was not being judgmental but simply scientific curiosity. But never mind, I will take a look at your profile, if it is active, and then presumably the answer to my question will present itself there.

This implies that I need to change, that it is my behavior that is unacceptable, and not the behavior of those shouting names.

I have offered you my counsel when someone's post bothers you. In one case you already have accepted my counsel.
There are various issues here that many or all people face: the perception of reality, being affected by this perception of reality, and the response to being affected by the perception of reality.
Dealing with these three issues in all cases is a matter of attitude and choice of attitude. Is the bottle half empty, or is it half full, or is another bottle, whether empty or full, more interesting?

As I have no knowledge about the posts that hurt you, I cannot judge those posts nor the people who made them, nor their behavior, nor do I judge you or your behavior. A mod presumably might.

Ah, a male switch. That switchiness is difficult to fit into my model of the mind. However, the list of interests indicates sub.

Tricky, I know, especially if you have to focus on not dribbling at the same time, or trying to remember your last post, but believe me, it is worth the extra effort - it stops you looking like a retard.

I'm comfortable with my responses. It's pretty easy to post stuff out of context.

Hippiekinkster joined a thread to make a single contribution - to call me a Nazi. That was his sole contribution to the thread. I got annoyed and posted a similarly snarling reply based on a similar lack of evidence.

The Grammar Nazi thing was in response to someone completely ignoring what a poster had said in favour of criticising his use of apostrophes. There's no name-calling there, as far as I can see.

The terrorism thing was in reply to a completely baseless comment that I support the attacks on civilians perpetrated by Hamas.

And the retard comment, I am confident, was in reply to a previous attack.

All the comments you have quoted are very recent and the result of my finally getting fed up with being attacked by people who basically don't like what I have been saying. I don't believe I have said anything negative to anyone who has not attacked me first. It might also be worth noting that when I have reported those who make the insulting comments or call names, there is, more often than not, zero action on behalf of the moderators here.

The point of this thread is that I am not convinced fighting fire with fire is the way to go, and I don't especially want to get into continual fights with people who constantly try to pick a fight. Jefffff for example, never forgave me for picking him up on it when he and another poster got into bullying someone on the creative thread.

The truth of it is all there for anyone who cares to take a look.

KatyLied -> RE: Name-calling - forbidden, or fun? (12/5/2010 7:17:59 AM)

The truth is that it is sad when a grown man whines over bullying.  It is probably best for you to step away from the computer and find some other pursuits that better fit your personality.

Jeffff -> RE: Name-calling - forbidden, or fun? (12/5/2010 7:18:28 AM)

Yes I never forgave you. I spent nights crying myself to sleep.

Then I come back and read your silly ill-informed posts and I feel all better.

The fact that people get butt hurt by the same behavior they exhibit is not the sign of thin skin.

It is the sign of a complete lack of self awareness.

Ouch! And you complain about name-calling, hertz? We have a pertinent Dutch saying: Wie kaatst, kan de bal verwachten. But more familiar will be another saying: De pot verwijt de ketel dat hij zwart ziet.

That's precisely the point, isn't it? My attempts to discuss an issue I find puzzling is dismissed as 'whining', and my comment that I am not especially happy about the situation is met with the suggestion that I leave. But at least you used the word 'bullying' - although that could be an accident, I guess. So basically, your vote is for the 'Yes' camp - it is acceptable to call names and insult people? That being the case, I guess I can feel just fine about my own responses to being insulted?
