Re:diabetes, it's an eyesight thing. Some type 1 diabetes sufferers sometimes go suddenly temporarily blind, and even pass out.

I think he's referring to the computer chips in some american cars which can be remotely turned off to prevent the car starting. "In general the UK has much more red tape then the US." Depends what subject, and what you count as 'red tape'. I know the construction industry is considerably less constricted over here. And student loans are certainly far better off if what I've heard in this thread is true....don't know why anyone'd think removing your driving liscense'd help ya pay money back.

It's actually both; diabetes can lead to an unnoticed loss of vision, especially towards the periphery, and there is also the possibility of passing out. sounds weird, but the brain "compensates" for mild-to-medium vision loss so well that people can be unaware they're going blind until it's too late

Yep, that's why they take a photo of your retina as part of diabetic screening. Most people won't notice blind spots until it's far too late, as you say.

For the retinopathy they're just looking for burst or blocked capillaries, but you can probably find all kinds of other stuff using a 30 odd megapixel photo of the back of somebody's eye...

It's not just the degree of damage, it's where within the retina it is, and in what patterns. One chap had another completely unrelated condition diagnosed (can't recall which one, but I'm thinking it was kidney or liver related maybe?) when he went for his routine scan.
