Ron- the rules are stricter in UK- EU- then in the US on this.

Obviously not.

Then have it your way.   Nothing but bliss and glad tidings from the students in the UK.

!!

Pah, you're wrong, that website is talking about usaican law (note words like 'federal'). I know you're mad but you can at least read if you concentrate.

Ok-  maybe I am incorrect.

In general the UK has much more red tape then the US.

The scams are rotated and recycled-- the grid plays both sides against the middle.

The new student loans in the US- could run into bigger issues then say in the 80s.   As the laws were changed-  so new loans here are more onerous- if it comes to default.

You can not lose your drivers license over a bad student loan in the US.

You cannot in the UK, lose your drivers licence over any bad loan.

But Ron just said you can have your licence revoked in certain circumstances in the states and that sucks for you all - and I do find him more reliable with his information.

I know you would like to set this up as some big anarchy movement in the UK, but it's just not that.

Re:diabetes, it's an eyesight thing. Some type 1 diabetes sufferers sometimes go suddenly temporarily blind, and even pass out.

Voiding ones license is akin to turning off ones chip.

Translation: "Sorry RCdc and RF, I got it completely, totally, 100% wrong. I’ll try to be less of a paranoid fool from now on".

Oh, here's an extra nail in your coffin; I've just phoned my mate, a serving copper and police tactical pursuit driver, to confirm absolutely that you're wrong. I was concerned I might have missed something.

It took a few seconds for him to stop laughing, but then he said "no, you can't lose your license for that - civil debts aren't applicable to criminal driving license proceedings - the law makes a very clear distinction between civil and criminal matters, and the DVLA would have a hizzy fit if anyone started treading on their toes".

All part of the service. Have a nice day.

I think it's more worries about poor control leading to somebody having a hypo while on a motorway.
I'd not heard of any cases of temporary blindness being caused by diabetes: I thought if it had fucked your eyes up, that was from damage to the retina from blocked capillaries, and was permanent.

I think he's referring to the computer chips in some american cars which can be remotely turned off to prevent the car starting.

"In general the UK has much more red tape then the US."

Depends what subject, and what you count as 'red tape'. I know the construction industry is considerably less constricted over here. And student loans are certainly far better off if what I've heard in this thread is true....don't know why anyone'd think removing your driving liscense'd help ya pay money back.

It's actually both; diabetes can lead to an unnoticed loss of vision*, especially towards the periphery, and there is also the possibility of passing out.

*sounds weird, but the brain "compensates" for mild-to-medium vision loss so well that people can be unaware they're going blind until it's too late

I'm not so sure about the 'blindness' thing, I just know that one of the early symptoms of a crash impairs your eyesight somehow, and a severe episode'll result in blacking out.....so for all intents and purposes...

IANAD.

Yep, that's why they take a photo of your retina as part of diabetic screening. Most people won't notice blind spots until it's far too late, as you say.

Happened to a guy I used to work with, way back when they moved a lot of UK diabetics from animal-derived to synthetic insulin. Caused a lot of problems for some people, including him. He didn't lose his sight, but it was touch and go, and a lot of laser treatments, before he got the all-clear.

One of the projects I worked on a couple of years ago was a diabetic retinopathy one - it's fascinating stuff you know; they can tell an amazing amount about someone by careful study of their retinal patterns.

I'm sure they can. For the retinopathy they're just looking for burst or blocked capillaries, but you can probably find all kinds of other stuff using a 30 odd megapixel photo of the back of somebody's eye...

It's not just the degree of damage, it's where within the retina it is, and in what patterns. One chap had another completely unrelated condition diagnosed (can't recall which one, but I'm thinking it was kidney or liver related maybe?) when he went for his routine scan.

Moonhead -> RE: London Protests Turn Violent With Parliament Under Siege Protesters are now fighting with polic (12/10/2010 8:16:45 AM)

That's useful, then. I suppose if he had an early stage of cirrhosis, they could pick up on the traces of bile that weren't showing in his skin yet in the retinae.

People don't know what the chip is?

Really?

Enjoy the gassed showers.    HA!
