ORIGINAL: Charles6682 The county I live in,Pinellas County,FL,has a good program. The Pinellas County Health Department here does provide preventive medicine to those who qualify.I guess they figured that would be much cheaper than having to pay for someone who is sick and run's up expensive bill's which usually the taxpayer already will wind up paying for. Hmmm, providing primary care to people actually cost's less than having the taxpayer paying for expensive hostpital stay's.Gee,what a idea.Is Pinellas county on to something here?Is it some rare secret that only Pinellas county knew about?Shhh, who would have thought?! Hey Charles- I wouldn't be surprised if Florida leads the way in healthcare reform, given the high number of retired persons who comprise a strong political caucus. Unfortunately the bulk of our country's govt funded health depts have limited services--what we call preventative medicine is really screening for specific conditions (breast cancer, colon cancer, cervical cancer etc.) and there are tens of thousands of constituents who fall thru the cracks--they don't qualify for the uninsured/low income programs the dept can resource out...and they don't make enough to buy health insurance or provide solid medical care for themselves. It's a huge nationwide problem. A good primary care provider can run regular labwork, order tests, do thorough physicials and see patients for the routine/mundane medical problems--a lot of these small clinics can not see these types of patients--they don't have the staff, time or funding. If they do, the care is not always up to the same standards as a private practice--wish that wasn't true, but it definitely is the case in many cities I've met with/visited. The federal govt is very strict about how their funding is used--if we have funds for cancer screening, then we can't treat patients for other conditions on those "tax dollars" or we risk losing ALL of our federal funding for being "misused." messed up I know. in the end, it's the taxpayers themselves--you and me--who feels the pinch.
