When Hitler was poised to invade England

[Etc, etc, etc.]

Fear not, Nighthawk, I did pick up a little something about history when I was in school and college.  But even if I hadn't - a favourite  TV show here was a long-running comedy called Dad's Army - about the Home Guard.  Pretty much everyone over the age of 30 here knows about the shortage of firearms and the phenomenon of a stalwart old boy proudly brandishing his pitchfork in place of a rifle.  However, thank you for your history lesson.

Yes, when it comes to a war against a foreign aggressor, it's pretty self-evidently a disadvantage that people aren't already armed.  They need to get armed, and trained, fast.  Still, it got managed in WW2, just as it did for the majority of people in WW1.  And of course we were - and remain -  grateful for the USA's help back then.

Actually, I'm not sure what your point is. Did you think my disagreement with private citizens being armed on a daily basis meant that I also don't think we should have been armed when facing Kaiser Bill or Hitler?

Not sure what the point is ? How about we do what we were supposed to do and not get involved with foreign entanglements.

Actun !, Ict bein circumised Herr. ?

We coulda just let the Krauts run them over, picked up the pieces later and without them hanging off of us maybe we could've prevented the formation of the USSR. Think about it.

Nope, that still doesn't help me connect my opinion on private gun ownership with whatever it was that Nighthawk was trying to convey. Sorry, Termy.

Criminals don't go to gun shows or shops to purchase guns, they get them from a dealer on the street or their "homeboy" down the road.

The government knowing who owns a weapon legally will not stop or even slow down gun crimes. There are very few gun crimes committed by those that have obtained their firearm via legal means.

No kidding?

Good to know!

That certainly puts my mind at ease.

The Denver Post Online - Columbine

April 27 - Three guns used in the massacre at Columbine High School were bought last year by Dylan Klebold's girlfriend shortly after her 18th birthday, investigators said Monday.

The woman was interviewed Monday by authorities, but not named as a suspect.

Though police declined to say where she bought the firearms, the manager of the Tanner Gun Show, a weapons market held nine times a year at the Denver Merchandise Mart, confirmed that the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on Monday asked for a list of recent exhibitors.

The same gun show was the subject of controversy in June when an exhibitor sold an SKS semiautomatic rifle with a 20-round clip to an undercover congressional staffer for $200 cash. The staffer never was asked for any identification for a background check.

In the case of the Columbine weapons, prosecutors said three of the four guns - the woman bought two shotguns and a rifle - fired in the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history may have been purchased legally.

I don't know why America loves guns so much.I am one American that could careless about guns.It wouldnt hurt my feelings if most guns were banned here.I can understand wanting a gun for home protection or for hunting, but thats it.Too many Americans take it to an extreme. Is there really any reason AK-47 need to be legal?

I don't know why America loves blondes so much. I am one American that could care less about blondes. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if most blondes were banned. I can understand wanting a blonde for a maid or a quick fuck, but that's it. Too many Americans take it to an extreme. Is there really any reason blondes need to be legal?

(with apologies to blondes)

I am kinda partial to brunettes, come ta think of it ...

I'd never 'fear' an unarmed man, and by unarmed, I don't mean a man without a gun...I mean a self-admitted collage man, who only learned 'a little something' about his country's recent history. Those who ignore(or fail to learn)history are doomed to repeat past mistakes. None so blind as those who refuse to see.

That's the point of 'private citizens being armed on a daily basis'. They don't have to 'get armed, and trained, fast'.

Nighthawk,

I'm very sorry, but that was too cretinous a comment for me to respond to.

But you felt called upon to do so, anyway.

Please take note of my wording, There are very few gun crimes committed by those that have obtained their firearm via legal means.

I'm not saying that gun crimes are never committed by legally obtained guns, they absolutely are but the FBI's own statics show that 98.2 % of gun crimes committed are done so by illegally obtained guns, leaving just 1.8% committed with legally purchased guns.
