$125 Very Small Cottage To Share (Putnam County< NY)
I'm living in a /small/ one-bedroom cottage set far back from the road and surrounded by open space lands. It is located in the middle of Putnam County a few hundred yards from the Dutchess county line.
It has a common living space occupied by my desk, a small kitchen table and a woodstove.
It has also has a comfortable futon next to the woodstove that could use a human sleeping on it and a small chest for some clothes. The closet in my bedroom, which is apart from the main space, will accommodate some shirts and whatnot that need to be hung.
Oh, and there's a dog. A very nice one, by the way.
There is no divider between the space where the futon is and my desk aside from a couple of shoji screens and the distance is a matter of just a few feet.
The woodstove is the sole source of heat for the cottage so knowing how to use one is important or a willingness to learn how is essential. With the futon next to the stove you can be guaranteed you will not be cold at night.
I'm a 53 year old masculine gay man. I smoke cigarettes, I've been known to have a beer on occasion, I tend towards Buddhism, and I write - which occupies a good deal of my time working at my desk doing research for articles, sometimes all day long. I also have a job outside the house where I'd be gone from around 8:30AM until 4PM in the afternoon. But then there are times, sometimes for weeks, where I'm here all day. My days generally run from 6AM until 11PM or a little later.
While there is no broadcast or cable television there is a FIOS internet line and wireless networking available if you have a laptop and there may be a spare computer here for your use.
My preference in music runs to singer-songwriter, folk and the more modern classics such as Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Adams and Hindemith with some of the lighter more traditional stuff tossed in. The radio, which runs via the computer, is usually set to NPR or a college folk station if it's on at all. But I have headphones and will be happy to use them, as you should be, too. I also have a Netflix account so movies are always available.
My preference for food tends toward the simple with little meat involved though there is a winter's worth of venison in the freezer.
If there's a good match I will make further accommodations for you by either moving some furniture around and/or condensing this or that to get you more space. But with the space being small, neatness and compactness is essential.
And though it may sound odd, the best way I can describe the successful situation is that we should be as comfortable together as if we were a married couple. (With separate sleeping quarters, of course.) The space here is that small.
I'm looking for ~$125 a week which would include sharing the resources (heat, hot water, 'net connect, Netflix movies, the kitchen and bathroom, etc.,) plus an adequate contribution for food which would be more easily handled if we ate together. And, as the cottage is rather isolated you will need a car, (it's 7 miles to the nearest store if that's any indication,) and there is no mass transit in the area.
This is clearly not for everyone. This is for someone, preferably male, who does not need privacy and can live in close quarters with someone else. It is not a place to host your date or a hookup or your friends and hang out and party - we just don't have the room. It's an asylum away from the noise of the outside world, a place to relax and rejuvenate, to read, to contemplate and to rub the dog's belly which will keep him very happy.
