kdsub -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/6/2011 9:58:00 PM)

Please go back a few of my posts and argue that one... it explains this one.

Now here we agree tazzygirl...at least the TV part

tazzygirl -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/6/2011 10:00:33 PM)

There is nothing in the classics that one cannot, or has not, seen on TV, in the theaters, or even on the street.

kdsub -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/6/2011 10:07:19 PM)

I also think we have come to an impasse…we have stated our ideas and further argument will change nothing.

It is for others to decide which ideas here match their way of thinking. Myself my first reaction matched yours tazzygirl but after I thought on it for awhile I changed my mind.

But that said I understand the thoughts of others and clearly see their viewpoint…I just believe they are overreacting.

And its my belief that censorship on this scale should never be allowed.

I am a gentle soul and the harshness of history should be tempered for me when possible…lol

But if we can change and edit our Constitution why not old Huck, Tom, and Slave Jim?

Butch

You have made much more of a profound statement than you know.

With the uproar it may very well be impossible for him to get a publisher so your comments as well as others may mean something. God Bless a democracy and the freedom of speech…well as long as the speech suits you.

Oh dear.

The publisher owns the rights to the book. They're the ones making the change, not the government.

Refusing to allow this rewrite would be censorship...no matter how much I disagree with the publisher's decision.

tazzygirl -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/6/2011 10:24:58 PM)

The government isnt the only entity that can censor.

domiguy -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 12:00:21 AM)

what about Pulp Fiction or True Romance?

hertz -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 3:29:02 AM)

I wonder if those you who think it is OK to 'teach' this book with the objectionable stuff cut out are the same people who would whine to high heaven if we taught modern history to kids, but with the Holocaust removed? I bet some of you are the ones who whine about government legislation designed to protect you from harm. I'm appalled by this, truly. What is the point of presenting a work of literature to kids with the most important theme excised? We'd be better off burning it. At least then it would be clear what our intention is.

I read Twain when I was 10 or so. I started with Tom Sawyer, and went on to Huck Finn because he got a mention in Tom Sawyer. It hasn't done me a bit of harm. It's probably done me some serious good. We need to trust that our educators, who are very bright people, can put this work into context. If they can't do that, then they should probably get out of teaching and do something less challenging.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 4:48:29 AM)

Really, Butch? Much "to do" about nothing? Apparently you haven't read Shakespeare.

I find it interesting that when there is a debate on here about what is or isn't racist, it tends to be mostly white folk who chime in. So I was very happy to see comments from the 2 Black men. If their feelings about this issue represent Black people as a whole, it appears that changing Twain's words is simply to assuage white guilt. And I agree with their points of view. But I'm not Black, at least not on the outside. LOL I didn't grow up Black, I haven't experienced what it's like to be Black in this culture, I've only observed it from a position of white (relative) privilege.

I think that it is a travesty to take classic literature & update it so that it is meaningful & not uncomfortable for the masses of today. However, it happens all the time. Look at the modern versions of Shakespeare's plays which come out of Hollywood. But those are movies, or even films, if you wish. This is a book, written about a different era in our history. How can we teach our children to not repeat history if we don't teach them the reality of that history?

Yes, I grew up during a time of segregation in this country. It was not pretty and the one black kid in my elementary school was teased & taunted & was a very angry young boy. I didn't understand it at the time. I was raised to not be racist, but they didn't want me to marry one. I saw the news when they took fire hoses to the black people in the South who were in the forefront of the Civil Rights movement. I think that it's unfortunate that today many of our offspring & their offspring have no idea of the struggle that this nation went through to get to this point in our history.

I wonder if they will take the violence of the Civil War out of Stephen Crane's work?

tazzygirl -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 5:28:51 AM)

If you read the reports on this, its become obvious the reason it is being done is financial... pure and simple.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 5:35:50 AM)

Ahhhh, well then that's ok. [8D]

tazzygirl -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 5:48:22 AM)

lol.. hardly ok. Just another pandering to the financial gods.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 5:50:44 AM)

But we do have to realize that our system is capitalism & that's what drives it. So if nothing was ever done for financial gain, we wouldn't be living the way we do now. Hmmmmm....I think I just argued with myself there. [;)]

hertz -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 5:52:58 AM)

Capitalism trumps Art?

We're in a bad way.

tazzygirl -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 5:53:44 AM)

Careful, slavery was for financial gain as well. [;)]

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 6:00:22 AM)

As I said, I argued with myself there & I apparently won. LOL There are many many things done in the name of capitalism that are abhorrent. I remember when I was a teenager, I couldn't figure out why I was supposed to hate the Russians. It was at the height of the Cold War. One day in World History, the teacher showed us a movie about that very subject & I though, "finally, I will find out why the Russian communists are so bad." Toward the middle of the movie, the point was made that the evil commie bastards made anti-American propaganda. I looked around the room & realized I was probably the only person in there who got that. Ummmm, you're showing us an anit-Russian communist propaganda film & telling us that the reason they're bad is that they make propaganda???? So I never did figure it out. Not to this day have I figured out why I should hate them. Bad things are done in the name of whatever the political or religious idea is. And also good things.

tomjot -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 6:04:09 AM)

i agree lleave it alone
