I do too Elisabella...I just don't see a big reason why there cannot be a children's version...I am not saying outlaw the original.

Butch

I really find this dumbing down, or censoring of books to make the more appropriate for younger readers offensive. Especially as there seems to be a trend to cut out more and more, for longer and longer.
There are scads of great literature for every age out there, and if a kid is mature enough to want to read, and then follow through with reading a book, it is also mature enough to do the work associated with understanding the piece.
This however, would make it necessary, that the adults in the children's life are active participants, willing to explain and to explore together.

Simply cutting out the difficult parts is much easier, of course.

Beautifully, and succinctly, put. Bravo [sm=applause.gif]

Capitalism trumps Art?

Capitalism appropriates art.

Take, say, an 8 year-old; this 8 Y/O may well be perfectly capable of understanding, dealing with, and even appreciating, more challenging concepts, whereas that one over there may not. By attempting to reduce all “children” (or indeed “adults”, but let’s stick with kids for the moment) to a universal “standard”, society is removing or stifling individualism and creativity, while ensuring that what we end up with is a homogenised product as an output.

Not sure how up to date people are with current films etc, but Avatar iss a multi-version film with an available child friendly track, when it's already a 12 pr PG13 etc that removes blasphamy and swearing.

Oh fuck that. Enough with these "Director's Cuts" and "Extended this and that" and "Child-friendly, non sweary versions" - put forward what you think is the film you wanted to make. Have the balls and the faith in your talent to show people your vision, and let that be your legacy.

Then, when the bean-counters and moral majority turn up, tell the cunts to go fuck themselves*

I agree.  I'm not entirely sure what the point is quite honestly.  If it's audio content is altered to cater to people younger than the already decided film rating... makes no freaking sense to me.

But then, Camerons gone all gaga anyway IMO.

I thought that Fern Gully was the child version.  And it is hella shorter.

They can insist on books like The Lottery Rose being required reading for middle school children, but they cant read the word nigger?

It's a commercial decision intended to increase the potential market for the work.

Which, I hope we can all agree, is wrong.

What about, "The Giver"?  Or, "Night"?

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with middle schoolers reading these.  I just fail to see the horror of Huck Finn.

Ridiculous...What in the fuck is wrong with the world today?

Take the "N" word out of literature and the arts?

It is a ridiculous notion and would kill the dialogue of some of our most beloved literature and films.

Take Ghetto Bitches 2, for instance.

In the scene where Laqueesha, authentically played by Mandy Moore, is unable to pay for her car repair bill she is forced to make good on her debt by allowing the two hillbilly greasemonkeys to repeatedly plunder everyone of her holes.

It would take away from the authenticity of the moment if the one dumb whitetrash hillbilly mechanics was forced to say, "You fucking skank, wrap your fucking African American lips around my cracker cock."

What kind of a world are we heading towards? If this is the future, count me out.
.

So says the whiteguy

And its my belief that censorship on this scale should never be allowed.

Oh dear.

The publisher owns the rights to the book. They're the ones making the change, not the government.

Refusing to allow this rewrite would be censorship...no matter how much I disagree with the publisher's decision.

No they don't...this is a book in the public domain.

This is a money grab aimed at white guilt and black racial profiteers

  1. Count the amount of time between hiccups.
  2. Around the time a hiccup should be coming up, or when you feel it coming up, cough loudly and/or scream!
    Repeat 3 or 4 times.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 5:46:34 PM)

FR...

Any good parent will say lets read together... nothing wrong with that.

But let us not take away the wonder and empowerment a young adult has for finding out things on their own, without adult supervision. Tweens, teens and young adults are not veal.
It's all part of growning up.

PyrotheClown -> RE: The Cleansing of Huckleberry Finn (1/7/2011 6:20:23 PM)

So....any word if any school is going to take it back up as part of their curriculum, now that it's "clean"?

as a tool to get young readers to start reading, it's almost unbeatable.

but your paste is getting so stale i cant eat it
there is a cat here at night i wish you would have
removed she nearly ate me the other night why don't she
catch rats that is what she is supposed to be for
there is a rat here she should get without delay
most of these rats here are just rats
but this rat is like me he has a human soul in him
he used to be a poet himself
night after night i have written poetry for you
on your typewriter
and this big brute of a rat who used to be a poet
comes out of his hole when it is done
and reads it and sniffs at it
he is jealous of my poetry
he used to make fun of it when we were both human
he was a punk poet himself
and after he has read it he sneers
and then he eats it
i wish you would have that cat kill that rat
or get a cat that is onto her job
and i will write you a series of poems
showing you how things look
to a cockroach
that rats name used to be freddy
the next time freddy dies i hope he won't be a rat
but something smaller i hope i will be the rat
in the next transmigration and freddy the cockroach
i will teach him to sneer at my poetry then
dont you ever eat eat any sandwiches in your office
i havent had a crumb of bread for i dont know how long
or a piece of ham or anything but apple parings
and paste leave a piece of paper in your machine
every night you can call me archy

I wonder how many budding young literary imaginations would never have been inspired had someone "cleaned up" the urban American classic Archy and Mehitabel in order to make them more accessible to, and easily understood  by, young readers.

I actually discovered a sure-fire hiccup cure recently, after getting a bad case of them, and so googling and trying a number in turn.

I've tried it (twice), and so have several friends. It's amazing. Works every time:
