Egypt's Muslims attend Coptic Christmas mass, serving as "human shields"

Maybe an example for all of us.

Yeah really...

Egypt’s majority Muslim population stuck to its word Thursday night. What had been a promise of solidarity to the weary Coptic community, was honoured, when thousands of Muslims showed up at Coptic Christmas eve mass services in churches around the country and at candle light vigils held outside.

From the well-known to the unknown, Muslims had offered their bodies as “human shields” for last night’s mass, making a pledge to collectively fight the threat of Islamic militants and towards an Egypt free from sectarian strife.

Thank so much for posting this.

K.

Allow me to echo Kirata and thank Sandra for this link.

Hugely impressive story, and one I'm surprised and a bit annoyed I've not heard reported on the CBC.....

Wow. In fact, "Wow" doesn't cut it. I am almost numbed.

It's not often I thank Muslims for anything, quite frankly, but this...I'm at a loss to describe the depth of service they have done us.

I am humbled today, truly. Sandy, thank you too for posting this absolutely wonderful news, I will be sure to spread the word.

Yesterday, I was eating lunch in a restaurant and a muslim lady came in with her 4 children. When she was seated, the couple next to her asked to be moved. Anyone wanna bet they just came out of CHURCH?

I hope that couple reads this story.

It seems a pity to inject a note of religious bigotry into an otherwise moving thread.

Maybe they just don't like sitting next to a table full of kids at the restaurant?

Thanks for the post, Sandra. I needed that.

That possibility occurred to me too, Rich.

The religious bigotry I was lamenting was Hill's assumption, on no apparent evidence, that the couple were churchgoers.

TheHeretic -> RE: Something to restore basic faith in humanity (1/10/2011 7:18:44 PM)

I'm right there with you, DC.

It seems there have been similar acts of solidarity and support in some parts of Europe as well.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Something to restore basic faith in humanity (1/10/2011 7:20:48 PM)

In this part of the country, if you want a seat in a restaurant for lunch on sunday, you had better get there before 12:05. As for the people not wanting to sit beside children, their new seat was also beside children. Bottom line is that they were so bigoted that they couldn't stand to sit near a muslim.

As for them coming from church. They were seated at 12:15PM on a Sunday. If I were a betting man, I'd give 5:1 odds.

My point is that a LOT of people who will go on and on about what "Good Christians" they profess to be are far from that.

My point is...

Your point is off-topic and unappreciated.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Something to restore basic faith in humanity (1/11/2011 4:08:55 AM)

Why, kirata? because it shows that some so called 'good Christians' can be rascist assholes?

DarkSteven -> RE: Something to restore basic faith in humanity (1/11/2011 4:43:15 AM)

More info: http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/0/3351/Egypt/0/In-Egypt,-ministers-and-movie-stars-turn-out-for-t.aspx

The ruler, Mubarak, clearly is in favor of cohesion with the Copts.  A lot of high profile Egyptian Muslims showed for this.

Moonhead -> RE: Something to restore basic faith in humanity (1/11/2011 4:49:56 AM)

It's definitely a healthy development.
Sadly, this sort of thing wouldn't be necessary if the nutcases who are trying to forcibly convert or kill, off the coptics weren't about, but it's great to see that those twats aren't a majority of Egyptians.

No, it's unappreciated only because YOU don't show any appreciation, or even understanding of this amazing event. It would be lovely if you gave us an idea of what you like about it.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Something to restore basic faith in humanity (1/11/2011 4:57:13 AM)

I'm VERY appreciative of this event. It goes to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that those who claim that ALL muslims are ebullllllll and killerrs are totally full of it.

there are evil terrible people on from all the branches of Abraham's family.

Likewise, there are some awesome ones as well.
