Always... grins... jammies are almost always a nice prescription for the soul. [;)]

Hot tea and honey, squeezing in just a bit of lemon, may help your throat as well.

I guess dumb question but I haven't been around any sick people that I know of or been in public much, so did this lovely lil head cold just stroll in on a whim or does someone sick give it to you?

I should say outside of my gym events and my walking, which is plenty enough to get a germ if they're out there.

The common cold virus can live for up to about 2 hours off the body. So it's pretty easy to catch.

the best tip is to drink water with lemon in it--routinely, to balance your body's acidity.  The general rule is consuming a balance of  avoiding certain alkaline and increasing the acidic.

Check prescription medications first; some very common ones should'nt be taken with citrus or apple juices.

yeah, thanks for that outthere, I never thought of that since I've never had meds. Good and valid point.

TFB, hon....
give your doctor a ring.  I'd probably bet on acid reflux too, but since I've followed your other threads, and I know that you're just starting an exercise regiment, you really should discuss this with a provider who can check you out.  If it is acid reflux, it shouldn't be ignored.  Either way, drinking plain ol' water is a good idea regardless when you're working out or not.

As for colds and just about any bug out there--wash your hands frequently--avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth and wash hands esp. before you eat.  Good handwashing is absolutely one of the best ways to reduce your risk of getting ill.

hausboy I did ask my dr an she was kind of rude about it. I told her I was getting heart burn and acid reflux after exercise and she said  something along the lines of good you should be because you're so out of shape.

that's completely unprofessional and unacceptable.   I hope that you find a new physician.  No healthcare provider worth a grain of salt would say that to a patient who is reporting symptoms.  I'm glad to hear you're exercising, but I'd still talk to a compassionate and responsive provider about the reflux-like symptoms.

Sorry to hear you are under the weather, Toppingfrmbottom.

Btw, that doctor has the wrong attitude...I hope you find another who doesn't write off every medical problem just because someone is overweight.

Years ago I had gone to several doctors who kept telling me that I was tired all the time because I was overweight, or that I must be depressed and to go see a shrink...they were wrong; it was slow growing lymphoma that was making me so tired.  Find someone who won't talk to you in that disrespectful way...who actually cares about their calling.  Like I did.

About the reflux.  I have it, or had it, depending how you choose to look at things.  I used to drink a lot of coffee and soda and citrus juices, and I had reflux from Hell.  It would rise up and burn the living cr*p out of my throat, and my throat would be sore from around the collar bone on up for days afterward.  I cannot remember all the different meds I went through trying to find something that worked.  I remember being started on Tagament, which didn't work well, then being switched to something else (maybe started with an X or Z) that worked fairly well for several years, and then later on I was put on Prilosec for several years.  That last one was wonderful...but wouldn't you know that they took it off the prescription only list and made it an over the counter drug.  My sweet insurance didn't have to buy it for me anymore, and it was too expensive for me to stay on.  Now I see that the medicine is in boxes that say you should be on it for only two weeks...yet my doctor had me on it for at least 3-4 years.

Anyway, I found out on my own that coffee, even caffiene free coffee, soda pop, mint tea, and drinks like Sunny Delight made my reflux horrible.  I switched to plain tea and started squeezing my own citrus to ensure none of the rind got into the juice and I have been much better these past 8 years.  Whenever I drink coffee, even just one or two mugs in a week, I notice a big difference.  Instead of enjoying mint tea often, I save it for when I have a cold or on other rare occasions.

Good job with the exercize, btw.

eat a yogurt or probiotic 1/2 hour to hour before the gym and nothing else any closer than 2 hours before. Wait at least an hour after to eat, and maybe even longer. Dont drink anything but water for that hour...youll have to judge the time for things other than water.

Quick comment - if you go the yogurt route, make sure it's got active cultures. Also, I'm not sure that this would work with a flavored yogurt.  Finally, make sure you're not lactose intolerant or it could make the problem worse.

yes Monday when I am back from my job interview I am calling member services and changing dr's. Dr Durant regularly makes me feel she's impatient with my questions, and with me, and regularly makes me feel snapped at, and then I am reluctant to ask her anything. One time I told her when she called me to do a phone appointment, it was for something else, butI figured that while she was on the phone, I should tell her that I had nose issues, and I forget what I said but she said eww gross TMI great, thanks for telling me that while I was eating.

She's got a very brisk manner. I'm sure she's not meaning to make me feel snapped at or brushed off, but she does, and I don't have to be stuck with a dr that does that. It's easy to change dr's.

Red flag... you should never feel reluctant to discuss anything with your Dr.. Im sure she is a good Dr... seems you two arent a good fit. Some relationships work out that way, ya know. [;)]

TY:) We looked into a gym near us yesterday, it had a pooll, but the place wanted a way expensive sign up fee, and the pool was ice cold, and I wouldn't swim in it, even if I had the 149 to give them to sign up. Plus the gym looked ran down, all the equipment was kind of old, and the grounds were a dump. Pool looked nice and clean and well kept though, and that's what would of mattered most to me, but it being like ice water because management who owned the gym refused to pay to have it heated, made the place a big absolutely not. On top of the price to join and a 1 year contract, and I couldn't bring  guests unless they paid 10 dollars.
