Your ears are connected to your sinuses, so if your sinuses are blocked the pressure can cause ear pain.
Also, if your throat still hurts, you can get referred pain to your ears from your throat.

And the itching?

angelikaJ -> RE: The dr said nothing wrong with my ears so y do they still hurt an itch? (2/13/2011 8:19:33 AM)

Physiologically, itching is the same mechanism as pain, just not as 'loud'.

So your body is getting the same impulses as pain but in a lower intensity. If they itch and hurt at the same time, it is just different nerves being engaged.

Yeah it goes from feeling like I am being stabbed, to someone going "Cooochie, coochie Koo" with a feather back to stabbing.

The advice nurse said there could befluid in my estacian tubes or what ever the tubes are called, that the dr could not see by looking in my ear, an that causes the pain an tickling.

When my dog eats something he's allergic to, his ears itch like crazy. Maybe the same thing happens in humans? Docs don't know everything.

What that means is there is nothing in your outer ear that could be causing the pain or itching... like a bug... i know, gross... but it does happen. If your ears are infected, sometimes the ear membrane could be bulgding or swollen. The itching can be caused by drainage from the tubes.

Well I do have a head cold complete with the congestion, the inability to breath one moment an the constant need to blow your nose but it doesn't acomplish anything an the sore throat, which some days is mild and other days, like 3:45 am this morning was raging and painful.

I had to cancel my volunteer appointment orientation, to sick to go:(

Mom worked as a clerk in a pharmacy for years and learned some helpful things, by seeing what other doctors prescribed for the same problems the family had.  It helped when I talked with our own doctors.  One thing...was some kind of ear drops that numbed pain in the ear canal.  It would make a baby with an ear infection go from screaming, to shutting up.  The doctor I had taken my son to thought it was "unneccessary" and didn't want my medical card to have to pay for it...or else he thought my medical card simply would not pay for it.  I told him to write it out and I would pay for it myself, it was only $2 or $4.

Another thing that some doctors overlook is the irritation causes by earwax buildup.  One time I thought I had an insect in my ear it was so bad, so I went to the clinic and was told no, not a bug, just ear wax.  They were sending me home, when I turned around and said, "You're kidding, right?  It's driving me nuts, get it out now!"  It took only a few minutes to take a syringe and some saline while I held a tray to the side of my neck to flush that sucker out.

I know your problem is temporary and will go away with time, but some of us (I cannot be the only one) have ear canals that itch all the time to one degree or another.  For me it's been over 30 years and I have a system [;)] for handling it.  If it is intense and a Q tip doesn't help, or it's too deep inside, I lie down, bad ear up, and pour in some hydrogen peroxide from the cap or with an eye dropper until it is full.  I hold still until the bubbling stops, probably a good five minutes, then hold a dry wash rag to my ear, sit up, and make sure it all drains out.  I can get relief for over a week by doing that, and yes, I told a doctor and didn't get that finger shook at me. [:D]

Good luck.

I went to my physician recently for an annual checkup.  The previous week, I had gone to an ENT (ear, nose & throat specialist) because I had been sick for an entire month, and my Eustachian tubes were so full of fluid I lost hearing in both ears.  Great ENT--wonderful bedside manner--she saw the problem, diagnosed it, gave me an appropriate course of treatment and I began to see results in a matter of days.  When I went to my GP (general practitioner) he looked in my ears and said : "well, they look good to me...but then again..I really don't know what I'm looking at in there.  What did the ENT say?"

I was a bit surprised--but actually respected him for admitting that he really didn't know and that specialist I had seen knew much more about it than he did.

If you have the means, see a specialist.  I won't trust my ears to anyone else.

Haus well I did find it interesting the nurse who looked at my ears said they were a bit pink and then same day like 5-10 mins the dr that I saw said no, they're not pink, she also said the sinus face pain I get now an then for the last week was a viral sinus infection an I just had to wait it out even tho my nose has been clogging an acting up for more than a year. So maybe I will see if I can go to an ent specialist.

Tfb.. have you tried the ear drops yet?

DesFIP -> RE: The dr said nothing wrong with my ears so y do they still hurt an itch? (2/14/2011 10:46:27 AM)

If the sinuses have  been upset for a year, then that's a clear sign of allergies.
I don't know why  but this winter, despite nothing growing under the three feet of snow, my allergies have been out of control. If I don't take the Claritin daily I get a nagging cough that prevents sleep.

Good that you can to to an ENT specialist and get to the bottom of this eventually, hopefully getting some relief.

In the meantime, there is a blue jelly filled face mask that can go from the refrigerator onto your face to help reduce swelling.  I have it, but I hate cold stuff on my face, lol.  Mom bought it for me one year, and my son uses it sometimes when he gets headaches.

In a month or two, I*m going to be ordering off that "looking into your ear" thingy from a pet catalog.  I plan to get very familiar with ears and notice when the wax buildup needs flushing by our GP*s nurse.

I bet ear canals look disgusting. [:D]

Tazzy yes an they bugged my ears an so I called the advice nurse n she set an appointment to speak to a diff dr by phone, and the new dr said stop taking them, the drops were prescribed for a problem I don't have. They, even tho my ears were perfect an the dr knew I was sick with a head cold an possible viral sinus infection (which is what she said was causing the pain in my face behind my eyes an bridge of my nose decided I had otitus or what ever an told me the drops will help the ear ache, even tho there was no sign of anything you'd prescribe acetic acid ear drops, those ear drops are for bacterial infection n I don't have 1. I have, the new doc said, fluid an mucus an guck stuck in my ear tubes, an drops you put in ear will do no good treating the crap inside my head where drops won't reach.

tazzygirl -> RE: The dr said nothing wrong with my ears so y do they still hurt an itch? (2/16/2011 9:31:11 PM)

Its called otitis media... meaning an ear infection of the middle to inner ear... and it sometimes cannot be seen from the outside until the ear drums are buldging. Typically only antibiotics will help.

From a professional standpoint, I think you need a new Dr.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: The dr said nothing wrong with my ears so y do they still hurt an itch? (2/17/2011 9:31:05 AM)

Tazzy I go see my new one tomorow. The theroy is tho my ears hurt because I have mucus an shit backed up in there. Since my sinus pain an congestion an ear aches are not getting better she's gonna give me an antibiotic, because there could be a pocket of crap that can't be moved out by using expectorants to break up an thinthe mucus, and netti pot treatments.

I hope this Dr works out better for you. And I hope you feel better very soon!

Keep in mind, if the infection is caused by a virus, antibiotics won't help and taking too many can be bad for you.
