My mom says it's what she does when her ears ache, an I won't do it cuz I got drops from the dr, but it did make me curious, so I thought why not ask.

I've done it for my daughters and it worked for them.
You may also want to try ear candling. That worked for them too.

MaxsGirl -> RE: Is the old time remedy of putting A lil warm olive oil in your ears for earaches dangerous? (2/13/2011 7:37:01 PM)

Ear candling is a complete and total scam.  The was that they seem to pull out of your ears is actually already in the "candle" before it is used.  And if you're not careful you can burn youself doing it.

When my son gets earaches, his doctor prescribes garlic oil for him.  It's available at a lot of natural food stores.  Garlic oil dries fluid in the ear, and has mild anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

There used to be something called "sweet oil" that people would put in their ears. I don't know if it's still available or how well it works.

Olive, or any cooking oil, with a drop of clove oil will numb an earache and allow a child to sleep.
Just as straight clove oil does for a toothache.

My grandmother swears a few drops of your own urine, while still warm, will cure an earache.

The nonsense you people profess is amazing! When are you going to catch up with modern medicine.

Yes, green tomatoes liquified and placed in a painful ear is believed to be curative by some. It doesn't work!
When the small end of a newspaper rolled into a cone is placed into a painful ear and the big end is lit on fire is believed to magically cure earaches as "the vapors" are exhausted. It doesn't work!

Hell! If you have external otitis, get some antibiotic ear drops!
If you have otitis media, get on a systemic antibiotic.
If you have a big painful cerumen plug, have your ear irrigated!

Welcome to 2010.

While I certainly have tried (and support) some holistic remedies....  I can only tell you that right now, there are a number of bad bugs circulating  (disease surveillance is one facet of my division) and earaches and ear infections are a big problem at the moment.  Some have cleared up on their own--others were too troublesome and required antibiotics.   I actually had one myself awhile back that filled up both canals with fluid and I had some serious pain and hearing loss (temporary).  It required steroids and heavy duty antibiotics specific to ears.

If it persists, I'd forgo the home remedies on this one and see an ENT (Ear/Nose/Throat Specialist)  I don't play around with eyes or ears.

edited to add:  I really do discourage folks from putting anything in their ears without speaking to a medical professional.  You can do more harm than good.  And PLEASE--don't stuff any objects in the ear canal, seriously.

For a temporary fix, turn your blowdryer on medium and let the warm air blow on the ear a bit.
(worked as a great middle of the night solution)

As a chronic sufferer of ear aches from swimmers ear - my doctor told me to make this:

Equal parts of White Vinegar (5% acidic) and rubbing Alcohol (70% proof)

mix together and warm like you are warming a baby's bottle.

Buy an ear syringe and flush ears.

Münchausen syndrome.

Hi janigrey

passing this along from my ENT specialist-- ear infections (regardless of whether they are caused by a viral or bacterial infection, or are secondary to other infections) are completely different from swimmer's ear, and the medications/cures for one do not work at all for the other.

I've had swimmers ear before too (I'm an avid snorkeler/swimmer--I had a wave catch me in the head swimming parallel to the shore and viola! swimmers ear.--the OTC drops for swimmers ear work pretty good too) but the last ear infection was a real doozy and required steroids and some hardcore major strength antibiotics to clear it up.

janigrey -> RE: Is the old time remedy of putting A lil warm olive oil in your ears for earaches dangerous? (3/19/2011 8:05:48 AM)

hausboy - thanks for the information.... I use my wash as a preventative - getting rid of the swimmers ear before it becomes something else.....My swimmers ear left untreated - would become something that needed antibiotics to get rid of ....

and it is also soothing for an ear ache (when warm) - I was responding to the OP.

I'll have to do a comparison next time I snorkel--put the expensive "swimmers ear" drops in one ear...and your doc's suggested solution in the other.

Wow. Not seeing the connection to swimmer's ear here.

Janigrey's mixed solution sounds like a drying agent mixed with an acid, which makes sense.

Munchausen's is the need for concern by medical specialists.

What exactly is wrong with wholistic remedies? They work. I, for one, do not run to my quack for antibiotics for every minor ache and pain.

For ear ache: Warm one teaspoon olive oil and add one drop lavender EO and one drop tea tree EO. Blend well. Soak a piece of cotton ball in this and use it to plug the ear.

This is not for swimmer's ear (which my dau suffered from for years), but ear ache.

If the above does not give you some relief, then see your quack.

myotherself -> RE: Is the old time remedy of putting A lil warm olive oil in your ears for earaches dangerous? (3/19/2011 2:31:02 PM)

Warm olive oil is great for softening stubborn wax that may be causing earache. My doctor advised it after I tried OTC wax softeners which left me with very sore ears. I don't use anything else.

Swimmer's ear is (I believe) a bacterial infection which needs a different type of treatment.

daintydimples -> RE: Is the old time remedy of putting A lil warm olive oil in your ears for earaches dangerous? (3/19/2011 7:58:40 PM)

Swimmers ear is caused by excess water in the ear in those who are underwater a lot and have an ear shape that retains water. This is why the earlier post re the alcohol mix was recommended and why it works as a preventative, it dries the ear and makes it less susceptible to infection.

That you have slight swimmer's ear or an ear ache doesn't mean you have an infection that needs antibiotics, however, any ear ache is very painful. The olive oil trick may give you some relief.

Since this is certainly out of my scope--I did a bit of digging (no pun intended)--and my source for this is the Mayo Clinic website--I have found it to be reputable, up to date and reliable.    Swimmer's Ear--I'm cut and pasting this from the Mayo Clinic site:

"Swimmer's ear is an infection in the outer ear canal, which runs from your eardrum to the outside of your head. It's often brought on by water that remains in your ear after swimming, creating a moist environment that aids bacterial growth.
"Putting fingers, cotton swabs or other objects in your ears also can lead to swimmer's ear by damaging the thin layer of skin lining your ear canal. Swimmer's ear is also known as acute external otitis or otitis externa. The most common cause of this infection is bacteria invading the skin inside your ear canal. Swimmer's ear is usually treated successfully with eardrops. Prompt treatment can help prevent complications and more-serious infections."
I actually had fluid in my ears quite severe--I was treating it like swimmer's ear, but when that failed--and my hearing was greatly affected--I immediately went to one of the top ENT doctors in the State, and she's my source that I quoted regarding swimmer's ear being different from the types of ear infections being seen in many patients this flu season.
