Do you guys really think Obama won the Presidency just because he was black?

He wouldnt have even won the nomination if he werent black.

Then why didn't Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson get the nomination when they ran?

Ummm, because people are smarter than they appear to be?

The US doesn't really intend to be a racist country. It just thinks that it's head and shoulders above all those peasant countries.

Is that really how you feel? I know your posts sometimes make you sound that way, but I was giving you the benifit of the doubt and assuming that was because this is the internet.

No America is not racist....the only way one could put forth an argument that a country is racist would be if racism were embedded in the law of that particular land.
We,as a Country, have actually went thru great struggles(struggles that revealed heroes that are commonly exalted today...such as Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King)to reach a point where equality is the law of the land....and we as a country have reaped the benefits of that struggle.
Now were you to ask does America have ,and unfortunately breed, large numbers of racists......sadly yes.
We will sooner or later reach a point where that is not so....but legislation has never been able to change the character of hard and bitter hearts.

We go out in public and into fora, wherever and know how to mind our manners, much like a child who knows what the bad words are and when not to use them, but when we get home watch out. Don't get in earshot lest you'll be appalled.

This country is no longer institutionalizing racism, but racism is still alive and well. These kinds of attitudes are not something that can be altered by legislation. In my lifetime I have seen what is acceptable in terms of people's attitudes toward race change drastically. I say this because 40 years ago I dated a black man. This was in a large northern city that many would perceive as being "liberal." There was a great deal of racism shown on both sides, white and black.

Now interracial couples are not openly ostracized the way they once were. But there are pockets of racism all over. And there are communities where racism is not just tolerated but considered acceptable behavior.

It's good as a nation attitudes are changing, but there is still way too much racism here.

As always, JMO.

I think a lot of it has to do with identity and culture.

...The issue in the US I see as cultural...when we have concepts like "acting black" and "acting white" it shows racialization, not simple prejudice.

I think we'll always notice race...saying "John is the black guy" to point him out in a crowd is just as intuitive as saying "Jenny is the redhead."

i agree that *that's* not racist. i'm just saying it seems odd to me that culture alone would cause a country to notice black skin so much more than red hair. No one says that a person is "acting redheaded". (At least, i've never heard it). Maybe part of that is cultural, but i don't think it all is.

Why even ask this?  I think in this day and age we are one of the least racist countries....You are an idiot to ask that question..but then again..I have wanted to ask about you in your responses to things if you are mentally sound..so I guess it doesn't matter....

Forgive him, he's not American. Which of course doesnt preclude him from being an idiot or mentally unsound.

Here on the block I live on- lets discuss-   the social contract.    We expect quiet enjoyment of our homes.  I lived in this house for 4 years-   tho- same block for 7 years as a renter way back.  So I knew what the "contract" was.

Anyhow- next door I went thru a parade of trash.   Same race as me.  Sure they would agree to respect- the consensus of the block- but in the end - it was only talk.

So- now- a new family is there about a year.   They have 4 young kids- the woman is Hispanic- the man is black.    I have had less trouble with them- then anyone else that had lived in that house.

They understand and enjoy what this block has decided to be- as we define quiet enjoyment of the homes.

I am happy with that... because it very easily could have been a train wreck.    Young families-  and 20 year olds-   often-   dont want the same terms as the over the hill crowd.

Red haired people are traditionally seen as bad tempered. Not sure it there is any truth in it tho - perhaps it is associated with Celts who were seen as very warlike. Weirdly in England they have an issue with red haired people. One can hear terms like "ginger twat" bandied about a fair bit, e.g. it's a common term of endearment for Chris "Christ" Evans.

Quick derail, I started a thread some time ago about a  scientific paper which speculated that red haired people may carry genes descended from trolls or ogres, aka neanderthals

It was a fun thread, as I recall

NO.

Everywhere has racist or bigoted people. America is no better or no worse than anywhere else and to judge the US by the posts of a handfull of people on here is wrong.

Aneirin didnt ask about other countries, just about America. And I feel as you do. There isnt a country on earth that doesnt have at least one racist in it.

Tazzy

What if you believe your race is superior to another but do not express this view... act on it or believe those inferior are not as deserving as you? I'll bet deep down the majority of people throughout the world believe this of their race...If this is so then the word racists in reality would be more the norm then the exception. In this context all countries and groups of people are racists. If the majority are racists then can it be that bad?

I contend there is a difference between racial pride and racism. The first lifts up, the second rips apart.

As a country wide issue, no. As some vocal pockets of racism? Yes.

Is the world racist? Yes. People draw lines to create "us" and "them" all the time. Sometimes it is done to create an identity.

Nice troll bait question.

I believe this was poking fun at Joe Biden's gaffe in the run up to the election. Speaking of which, would Biden be VP if he wasn't white?

What strikes me here is how some few folks from countries or regions that are, shall we say, virtually "diversity-less," find such fascination with this topic.

i'm sorry, but i don't think those are very strong examples. i've never heard someone say that a person is "acting redheaded" (or "not acting redheaded"), although i've often heard it said that person is "acting black" or "acting white" (or "not acting black" or "not acting white"). i don't know whether they say the redheaded bit in England, but they don't say it here (at least, i've never heard it).

My point was that Americans seem significantly more preoccupied with skin color than they are with hair color. Saying that red haired people are traditionally seen as bad tempered in some countries, is *not* the same thing as saying that in the U.S., the two carry equal weight.
