I'm with Marc on this one. It's just plain mean. I go on blind dates with women I meet online at free (and paid) dating sites. So far, I haven't been "stood up" but it would really be humiliating to show up.....realize my date isn't coming.....and I'm surrounded by other men who were duped--and the whole thing is caught on camera so that a bunch of douchecanoes can laugh at us. It's just not funny.

Some time back, I created a thread called "If I were a scammer" or something like that. My intent in doing so was to illustrate how easy I thought it would be to pull off some of the things that people fall for on the internet. Most people didn't take the thread seriously. In part, I think that had something to do with the fact that they have gotten to know Me enough from the forums to know that, as a human being, I wouldn't do such a thing. However, that wasn't the point of the thread. I have every reason to believe that I could dupe people. I've got enough knowledge of BDSM to pull it off. I don't even consider Myself that smart. I honestly believe it would be easy go do if I applied Myself. I see this as the very same thing.

FR I feel bad that I don't feel bad. I'm horribly desensitized. I can acknowledge that those individuals will probably be emotionally hurt by being duped as such, and while I expect everyone to take a rather paranoid-skeptical approach to online acquaintances I know that this is not the case, so I can empathize. But, eh. For some reason, unless it's animal or baby torture, or it's someone I'm connected to personally, it's hard for me to do much more than the aforementioned acknowledgement and light-hearted fun-making of the situation. I'm a beast, I know. I blame the intarwebz.

...as the net evolves-- this is perplexing in that- 10 years ago- this happened all the time- sort of... but today - most are ....past it. tho that was also before facebook. what are these duped guys supposed to think when there is a group of them? who wants to be in the wrong place wrong time- if someone becomes unglued.

Maybe it's just Me, but it's not so much that the guys are getting pranked. It's that folks would actually join an effort to make this successful and try to target as many marks as possible. So, just because it's not as severe means we should be glad that people would go out of their way to pull pranks of this nature? We should just be anesthetized to lesser forms of playing with people emotionally because compared to greater atrocities, it's just not that bad? That's one way to look at it, I suppose. The other way is to say that any negative of human nature is still a negative.
