The first thing that came to mind while reading your post, OP, is something LadyPact wrote on a thread a while ago. Basically, from what I can remember (pardon me, LP, if I don't quote directly but I don't remember the exact thread) she made mention to the fact that there are some topics that she wouldn't give information on to random strangers online. Things like fire play and, in my opinion, blood play are activities you make the effort to learn from someone who knows...in person.

I recently attended a fire play demo and that concept was reinforced 100%.

OP, I like blood and sharp objects, but the only link I'm willing to share, with a clear conscienous is for the American Red Cross. Learn first aid and find a way to get to some local munches or demos (check FetLife) and take the time to meet others who are much more versed in this type of play before following some blurb found online.

Good luck.

No need to apologize.  You were right on the mark and it's exactly what I would have said if I'd have been here first.

How do I find information about demos or places to learn more on this particular subject? I believe the closest city to me that would have an active BDSM community would be Atlanta GA, which is still 6-7 hours driving time. I would prefer to read more online first. At this point, it's only a curiosity (it's actually more my sub's fetish than mine). I only want to read about other people's experience for now.

I'm not an idiot. I'm not going to read some online article and immediately begin poking around with a knife. I won't touch my sub until I'm 100% comfortable and confident about this. I'm not someone that would take a safety risk on something like this. It's rather serious fetish.

I tried to look at your profile to determine your location.  I can promise you that no matter which direction you are geographically, if you are six to seven hours away from Atlanta, that's not your closest resource.  You would have to be either in Tennessee, South Carolina, or Florida.  All of which have folks who are experienced in the practice and if you would happen to be coming from the northern direction, you'd be driving right by where I learned to do cuttings Myself.  If you're coming from either of the other places, those are folks that I've known from attending SELF over the last five years, so I can assure you that they are out there.

If you're just looking to read other people's experiences on the practice, there are actually a number of those on this site.  I have one of My own here about clip's first cutting.  These aren't "how to" kinds of posts.  They are more focused on the joys of engaging in this kind of play.  You can find many of those by using the search feature.

OP, here is a link you might find interesting:

If my computer wasn't acting up, I'd have more.

I'd be happy to chat about blood play and cutting. I know what it's like to want to read up on things before actually doing the deed.

I'm located in the Tennessee/Virginia area. For some reason my CollarMe profile wouldn't allow access to the message board, so this is a separate account. I've not been able to find anything closer that seems active enough to have events. The search feature on this board seems to show too many results to be useful many times.

Bristol isn't as large as it seems. If you know of anything there, please share. It's only about 45 minutes away from me.

Mmmmm Blood Play, one of my favorite things, actually just did a cutting scene last night.

Blood play is pretty serious stuff, just like with fire play there is a lot of science involved.

Some of the science/medical topics one must have decent knowledge of before even entertaining the idea of blood play:
- the anatomy of skin
- human anatomy especially in regards to major blood vessels, nerves, muscles, basic locations of internal organs
- sterilization (what that really means, what counts as sterile enough for the activity planned, and what makes a sterile item no longer sterile)
- understanding of sharps, how they cut, how deep, how clean
- standard precautions
- first aid
- understanding of first aid equipment (what different bandages are and what they do)

It's the science of it that makes us not want to just tell you how we do it. It's extremely important to have someone to help you learn about all of these things and assess your skills and understanding. Screwing up any of the above can scar someone, cause grave injury (nerve, muscle, other internal damage), or even kill them. Also, even with training and experience mistakes and accidents still happen. Knowing what to do in the worst case scenario of blood play is far more complicated than the play itself, and is even more important.

I also highly recommend talking with health professionals that are also kinky. I've got a number of kinky MD and RN contacts that are excellent resources when it comes to my edgier blood play/medical play plans.

You should use a sharp and clean knife. Keep some type of clothe nearby just in case. If you want to be extra careful you can clean the skin with rubbing alchohal before hand.
My Master wrote his initials on my hip with a knife and I loved it.
If your more interested in the pain then the blood you can just do quick fast scratches with the tip of the knife. It'll still bleed but not as much and the cuts heal faster.

To all the naysayers out that, YES indeed up until 20 years ago knife play was self taught <pre internet>. Why all you ppl think it's NOT self taught is beyond me. Hunter and farmers do it all the time...SHEESH. So you know where Im going with this... Buy or hunt small game. Produce is another good one to practice on. Im sure if you think about it you can come up with hundreds of ideas.

Im sure the safety nerds will jump on me for whatever. Ive cut n scratched, broken bones to many times to count thru my life and never once did I think oh boy I should sterilize this or what's the best bandaid to use REALLY?????

Blood play, and knife play are two VERY different things. I do both, often at the same time, or right near each other, but they are VERY different.

Most knife play need not even involve blood, in most knife play the purpose isn't even to leave a mark. That said I always wipe down my knives with alcohol and let them air dry, or burn it off prior to play (proper sterilization!)

Blood play you're getting into the skin, the purpose is to make someone bleed. Depth of cuts can be hard to see, cleanliness can't be seen, and nerves and major blood vessels can be hard to avoid.

Case in point we were playing with the same scalpels we always use, one spot on my shoulder the cut was a little deeper than predicted and a little thinner and started to split. That cut needed to be carefully cleaned and sealed with a butterfly. That was a minor error, a cut less than an inch longer, and a fraction of a millimeter too deep.

Also, sorry, I would never just use a "clean knife" for blood play. Glad it worked for you, but safe play requires disposable medically sterilized equipment, or if using something special a solid understanding of what sterile is.

I knew the safety police would mount me. FYI Im a combat veteran patched up my share of fellow soldiers where you take your K bar <knife> and dig out "whatever" is inside toss some sulfa powder on the wound until we could get them to the MASH unit. So I suspect I know a little more blood play and how to treat wounds than you. The US military knows a lil something bout first aid which they teach to "every recruit" as part of their basic training.

So you can talk from today til tomorrow about your "right way" to treat wounds. But you really dont have a clue. When my ass is shot up in the middle of the jungle and I can't get airlifted out cuz the LZ is covered with tracer rounds and RPGs I really don't want you lecturing about a dirty knife... I want a fellow soldier!

If it works for you great. Also you've had some training.

So have I.

Last thing I want is some new person thinking something is safe when it's not. In fact blood play isn't safe at all. That's part of why learning safer practices is important.

What you did to survive in war some new person shouldn't necessarily do in the bedroom for fun.

This thread is not a judgment on you SailingBum, it's about what people *should* know when getting into something like blood play.

On the Job experience is a much better way to put it. I did not take offense whatsoever in your posts. I was pointing out that there are a variety of ways to learn a skill. Nor am I saying one way it better than the other. They both work just different styles.
