FR- the concern that the cube shaped store is an "insult" is pathetically whiny! Some people feel this way over the flag, and other shapes, emblems. If they are so concerned let them buy the copyright to it!

Look infidel . . . You need to realise that Islam has the right to be offended by any and all square objects, you just have a small closed western mind! I understand they are mildly offend by shallow, almost square like rectangles too. There was recently a "round table" meeting to consider whether ovals contained a square like influence because they weren't perfectly round . . . a Jihad against ovals is expected soon. [:D]

I'm amazed that any one is credulous enough to take this yarn seriously. A very suspect site, openly pro-Zionist, claiming to be a 'translation service' but adding lots of editorial, with an apparent focus on stories that complement Israel's political agenda and direct links to Israeli intelligence quotes an unidentified "Islamist" site as the original source of this tale. It's recycled news - first published in 2006. To me, it would be prudent to remain sceptical until that unidentified Islamist site is identified and the claim is verified. To assert it is true, on the basis of the evidence to date, is simply preposterous. Until the original source is verified, any reasonable person would surely file this tale under "dubious".

It is a slightly perplexing story. Did another quick google search to discover more and it seems there was real anger so the story in Memri is probably genuine but it was due to a misunderstanding partly caused by US cultural “insensitivity” by using references to Mecca! Calling of the store “Apple’s Mecca” appeared in numerous places during construction while the cube was covered by dark paneling. It drew some angry comments such as here http://gothamist.com/2006/04/07/the_cube_reveal.php from Muslims. A story by a Mark Morford in the San Francisco Chronicle http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/culture/detail?entry_id=4203 seemed to cause the stir. See the comments too. He emphasised the architectural aspects and made a joke about the iPod Bar which caused some Muslims to believe the building was serving drink. References to pink iPods served with vodka which probably got lost in translation! That’s the take on it by some guys on one of the main Mac forums anyhoo! [:D]

The story in MEMRI attributes the alleged threats to an "Islamist website". You aren't seriously suggesting that either the San Francisco Chronicle or the gothamist websites are Islamist websites are you? It doesn't matter how much you want to believe this yarn to be true.This yarn has no credibility until the alleged Islamist website is identified. Wow, no I wasn't. lol Merely that there was at least some anger in the Islamic community over a misunderstanding so it provides some substance to the claim Memri made. The building did look very like the structure in Mecca before construction was finished and with rumours of alcohol being served I can understand why Muslims would get annoyed.

Your signature ("I had lot's of luck but its all been bad") suggests that your judgement might not be everything it could be. Please stop introducing evidence to add weight to that interpretation. BTW did I mention that I have a cousin who owns a bridge in New York that is up for sale?

I didn't think luck and good judgement are necessarily connected but don't want to fall out with anyone over what is a relatively minor story so we'll agree to differ on the topic and leave it at that. [;)]
