Actually, you might as easily make things better for her--as long as you were willing to push it beyond a certain point. The results are a bit unpredictable, however.
Both dogs (see Pavlov), and people (see W. Sargant), when they reach a certain level of mental stress or excessive stimulation (such as that experienced during warfare by soldiers placed in grave danger for long periods of times), start to shut down mentally. There are symptoms: stereotyped behaviors, jerky obsessive movements, laughing at horrible things, crying at neutral or happy things, grossly inappropriate responses to what is actually happening around them. It is speculated that this shutdown during extreme stress is a preservation process that saves their brains from more extensive damage. When this shutdown or "transmarginal inhibition" occurs, if the pressure on them is extreme, an "ultra paradoxical" mental stage can be reached where one starts to like what one formerly intensely disliked and dislike what one formerly liked. This is a purely physiological process, and it is at the root of brainwashing: during the brain's natural response to extreme emotional/mental stress, one's old programming, established belief systems, old habits, including negative and neurotic ones, are highly vulnerable to change and are often spontaneously reversed. At very least, the brain becomes extremely open to adopting new belief systems. The documentation of this phenomenon is quite extensive, and covers a wide variety of situations, not just shell-shock from warfare.
