DNA testing is done by extracting a sample and using DNA polymerase to create more of the molecules.

Step 2. Use a 'restriction enzyme' that recognizes certain sequences and cuts the DNA at those sequences. As everyone's DNA is different, the cuts will yield parts of different lengths.

Step 3. Place the mixture of DNA fragments on a semipermeable gel and place a small DC charge across the gel.

Step 4. The fragments will migrate thru the gel in reverse proportion to their Charge/Mass ratio, (the DNA has a lot of phosphate in it which has a negative charge)

Preliminary results can be obtained in 12-24 hours. If you need a fast quick and dirty, you slightly increase the DC voltage which makes the fragments move a bit faster.

How do I know?

I did it when I was in grad school.

There is also a test that takes 4 hours which is good enough for a preliminary match.

I had the link earlier but would have to find it again.

You are probably correct. what most folks don't realize is that most analytical techniques are invented by a bunch of eggheads in a university lab with a LOT of cool equipment. After the technique is perfected and vetted, it must then be 'dumbed down' so that a typical tech can do it without undue difficulty and still obtain good data. This typically means dwawing the process WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY out.
As for speeding things up, if I owned a DNA lab or an EPA certified water lab (or other private analytical facility), I couldn't afford to have my analysts shut the production line down for a coupla months while my employees worked out a protocol that might or might not save time in the future.
Let the guys in the uni do the hard work and then I'll adapt.

I hope the above coupla posts helps those folks wondering how OBL's DNA was analyzed so quickly.

If you need more info, My mailbox is open on the other side.

Thank you for the posts. I was just curious because so much time is often required or involved in normal identification process's on a standard level that were accustomed to that results in such a short time just sort of seemed out of the realm of normalcy, and sorry but I to fall on the side of skepticism anymore when it comes to anything governmental. It's over all a healthy one I think but skepticism none the less.

Skepticism is healthy, ESPECIALLY where it concerns the government.

Fingerprints are only useful if the person has been fingerprinted before (usually in custody or when applying for a job).

It took Obama to get Osama!!Go figure.

There would be extensive medical files on him somewhere.

Why are you assuming they didn't run his prints?

Good point.   They did say  99.9% sure of the identity.   I tend to think they had his prints somewhere on file...  he was 10 most wanted FBI with a colorful past....   I am not convinced he is the 9-11 mastermind.. I think he was a bad guy-  but 9-11 had many MANY compentents and safe guards that failed so it does not make sense that 1 man could foil ALL OF THE SAFE GUARDS.

Labs tend to stick with what they know works, what their staff is trained for, and what makes the most financial sense for that lab. You were right on target with that.

The conspiracy people are going to find a reason to bitch.  It's what they live for.

I'll refer to yours and hunky's posts both here. Hunky, American medical files do NOT include fingerprints.

julia. If OBL's medical files included fingerprints taken by a Pakistani doctor, would YOU trust them?
I would be inclined to think they would be fakes. The ONLY prints I would trust would be those taken and vetted by American LE agencies.
