I agree with this statement, but I would amend it to say, hate comes from the anger caused by the fear of (past, present, potential) violated trust.

And in terms of the ongoing celebration at a man's death on this forum, a man who is said to hate the west, why is it he hated it so much, what caused him to hate ?

One might equally ask why he is himself so hated, and why others take such gleeful pleasure in his death.

Remembering of course that all hate eventually poisons the hater.

One thing that causes a person to hate, is when a child sees his parents shot by occupying soldiers in broad daylight, while the child looks on. Anothing thing that causes hate is when you come to find out that the Federal Income Tax is a voluntary tax, and that there is no law in the United States that requires citizens to pay this tax. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5355374476580235299# Enjoy!

A poll should be taken on this question for all the hosts and hostesses on MSNBC and Joy Behar on the View and Whoopee whatever. Why hate? And when did they last take their meds?

South Pacific - Carefully Taught

You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

". . . the Penguin Dictionary of Psychology defines hate as a "deep, enduring, intense emotion expressing animosity, anger, and hostility towards a person, group, or object."

Who knew penguins had such problems!!

Look here for Penguin hate

Who's have thought such a distasteful topic as hatred could evoke such a hope-inspiring response?

With one of two (rather self serving) exceptions, we all seem to agree that hatred is a profoundly un-natural production. Of course it is, infants don't arrive in this world bearing hatred, someone or some things combine to implant hatred there.

We all (bar a couple) seem to agree that hatred requires nurturing to be sustained or to sustain itself. The evidence from bigots, and their hopelessly skewed, carefully- and selectively-edited world views adds weight to this insight.

We all (bar a couple) also seem to agree that hatred is profoundly negative, and itself a consequence of other negative factors - fear, violated trust, deprivation, oppression and other factors have been advanced (with eminent justification, from where I sit). Anything that is a social production can be altered/dismantled through the same means. In other words there are solutions to hate.

I'm so glad that almost all of us agree on this. It does make me feel optimistic. We might never be able to eliminate hatred's odious influence from our lives completely, but, by identifying its causes, we are well on the way to minimising its insidious effects.

Please let's stay focussed on that goal.

Yes they were. Sung in the spirit of facetiousness, irony, etc. An acerbic comment on things as they were at the time and in that setting. The rest of the movie is rife with stereotypes of every sort. I can hardly watch it all the way through with out banging my head on the table. But I still can't help but wonder if all the stuff going on in the mid-late 50's in the US fed into the movie by way of this song and the theme underlying there. (the movie was released in 1958).

The background to this is that the woman did not want to marry the man because his previous wife was Polynesian and so then his two kids were from that. Of course it all turns out well in the end, she takes the kids as her own, etc. Jump to the last scene for that.

The audio and video are seriously out of sync in this one, but all I can find for the moment:

I think it is very interesting how different people see different things. When I first saw the movie, I though it was a cute show that illustrated how wrong it was to judge others bases solely on the color of their skin.

Declaring certain natural human emotions taboo is an interesting phenomenon. Hate is bad, pessimism not allowed, nationalism a crime, one has to smile constantly (genuine or not), certain words can not be used... and so on. At the same time: greed is good, ignorance and stupidity understandable, hypocrisy OK, a pharisee equals a normal person and so on. Emerging (stealth) totalitarian state is in need of humans trained into certain mindset, equipped with invisible restraints to ensure a narrow predetermined  range of behavior.

Isn't that what society is based on, a predetermined range of behavior?

Yes it is unfortunate that greed and hypocrisy exist but by the same token the bounds of societal norms prevent, or at least help to contain, far worse.

Hate is a powerful word, a negative word and a destructive word, but what causes the word to be used ?

One's experience. Pretty obvious really. Nobody likes parking tickets.

All words are powerful we know this from the great war of 2015 where one army had swords and the other had pens.

And in terms of the ongoing celebration at a man's death on this forum, a man who is said to hate the west, why is it he hated it so much, what caused him to hate ?

Did the west perchance give him a reason to hate it ?

It could be that, or perhaps he could sense an overall hatred for the west anyway. He might have seen that as a way of gaining power and making a name for himself. An army of rabid, fanatical haters can be a powerful weapon. From a political standpoint, it might be said that a good way to maintain power is to find something else for the people to hate.

A lot of the Muslim countries are gripped by sectarian violence and internecine conflicts, so perhaps some might feel that hatred against a common enemy might unify all these divided factions. I don't really see how it would work, but that may be the motivation.

As for what the west might have done to give him a reason to hate it, it's hard to say. The man was pretty rich. The Arabs were charging us an arm and a leg for oil and amassing huge fortunes in the process. They've had us paying through the nose, so they can't hate us for making them rich.

But I suppose there are those who could come up with any number of reasons to hate the big, bad, imperialist west. In some forums I've visited, I get the impression that some people believe that America is the root of all evil in this world. They have a whole laundry list of reasons why, too. So, I guess Osama could have picked any or all of those reasons.

All in all, despite the evil, dastardly act he and his cohorts committed on 9/11/2001, I think that in time, history will view it as one of the greatest blunders in history. Things haven't really gone too well for the terrorists ever since. I don't know what they were expecting to happen or what their objective was in pulling off that thing. So, I'm kind of stumped on that question, too.

I can understand good old fashioned hate, but beyond that, I don't really know what they expect to accomplish. If they want to take over America, then all they have to do is buy it, just like the Chinese are doing. They don't have to blow people up.
