Hello Everyone.

I have been wanting to whiten my teeth for a very long time, sadly, I have been scared to take the enamel off and cause damage.

Has anyone had bad or good luck with any of the hundreds of products out there? or
How about the dentist ?
How about up keep, or expense?

Thanks in advance

Crest White Strips actually does a fairly decent job. Once you teeth are white you will only need to retreat every 3 to 4 months. Down side is it can take 6 to 8 weeks. Also mouth irratation due to the perixode solution

For a quicker whitening, you can ask your dentist. The cost at the dentist will be $100 to $300 USD. The advantage of the dentist is it will happen much quicker. One to two treatments but costs more.

Whether you choose the dentist of home treatment, both use perixode solution. The advantage of the dentist is quicket results but at a higher cost. Both treatments work in the same manner. Google it

Those strips aren't cheap.  It may seem like the dentist is more expensive but if you add up the cost of the strips you will need to get to the color you want, it may be better just to dish out the whole to the dentist.

As far as damage etc, your dentist will be the best person to ask as he is the only one who can tell you if there is any damage to your teeth now.  A good way of keeping your teeth white is to simply go to the dentist for cleaning twice a year and brush and floss.  They may not be the glamour white but they will be natural white.  Also be sure you don't have any gingivitis etc which is effecting the health of your mouth.  So i would check with your dentist and go over everything with him and talk in depth with him.  He would also be able to tell you which ones would be best for your teeth and the method.

Many dentists nowadays have a special of free whitening.  What this usually is is they make a mold of your teeth and give you the whitening stuff to use.

Sand paper can make your teeth whiter too.     I just use baking soda.   Those white strips are a bleach.

My teeth are yellow. They have been that way from the moment I had them. It is natural, so I feel no inclination to change it. I am satisfied. Them television ads with television teeth do not impress me: they are merely an artificial rave or fad or whatever.

Go the dentist route.
It only costs about $300.00 to make the trays, then {minimally} $50.00 and upward to purchase product. It may sound expensive but you don't continue going to the dentist for treatment, and you have the benefit of maintaining on your schedule.

Professional bleaching kits the dentists employ contain a solution of carbamide peroxide (varying concentrations). This gel, as it is often supplied, can be purchased from a number of online retailers. Some even offer fabricating custom mouth trays (this will ensure contact of the gel to the tooth's surface)...these kits (gel + mouthpiece) can be had for less than you would think (easily less than $30)....just do a google search for carbamide peroxide gel....before using it, get a clean bill of health from your dentist--he will insist that you purchase the kit from him (there is a ginourmous profit margin for him). you just need to make sure you lack cavities and your enamel is in good shape before bleaching. Most of these gels bleach the enamels surface through oxidation and cause very little, if any, damage to healthy enamel. To maintain your pearly whites avoid things that will stain your teeth: tobacco, wine, coffee, etc etc etc

Backing what the others said--my mother had her teeth whitened by the dentist.  It was approximately $300 (somewhere around that) and it was quick and easy compared to the do it yourself kits.  She's totally happy with the results, and that's really all that counts.

I really like the Go Smile stuff. You apply a little tube worth in the morning and the evening...no hanging around waiting for the strips to work. I also thought they were less irritating than the strips. They have a whole mess of products. I bought mine from a discount site and they worked well.

Before you embark on any tooth whitening venture, they work best after a teeth cleaning.

I use Plus White 5 minute Tooth Whitener. It's a buck at the dollar store and comes with a tray I didn't like very well so I purchased a cheap mouthguard set at a sport store or one of the Marts or Target. Follow the directions to heat it in boiling water and bing bang boom, there's your custom set of trays.

Cheap, fast and works great. Once you get to the shade you want you can just squirt some of the gel onto your toothbrush with your regular toothpaste periodically and it'll keep up your bright smile.

I had it done at the dentist and the strips and it hurts my teeth really bad.I think the stuff removes the water from the teeth orsomething like that (if I recall what the dentist said).. But , to me, it hurts like hell and I cannot deal with that kind of pain . What can I say, I am a whimp and it is why I am a dom ;)

As a painter I quite enjoy acrylic enamel, I like the gloss kind over matte finish. Sometimes I dont stay in the lines and my gums look a tad infected but it goes away in a day or two as I swallow the paint chips.

The problem w/the strips are if they make contact w/your gums it'll be painful and could cause an infection w/continued use.
Try peroxide mixed w/water. 50% peroxide mixed with 50% water. Simple cheap solution that does no harm. Just don't swallow! I know that's not usually heard of in this lifestyle but take my word for it, in this case it's a good thing

I didn't read the whole thread, but it occurred to me to mention that having a dental hygienist do your cleaning is often covered by your health insurance if you have job-related insurance that's good, and only pay a co-pay. I have found that nothing works as well especially if you drink coffee, tea, soda, smoke or intake anything on a regular basis that stains your teeth. Additionally, a cleaning from a hygienist can help find problems with your teeth you may not have been aware of. They do have more than just the scrape and buff method, as well, there are some that perform a whitening treatment that works 10x faster and better than anything over the counter.

I have trays that fit my lower and upper teeth my dentist made many years ago and I buy syringes filled with the gel to whiten your teeth and I do it every so often now but not as much as I should..when I first got the trays from my dentist I had to do it every night for two weeks and that made my teeth whiter and it lasted for a long time..mostly I do it a few times a year now right after I get my teeth cleaned.

I haven't had any problems with my enamel but your teeth can be a bit sensitive for a day or so after you do a treatment.

my job is to whiten teeth in a dental office. FYI it does not damage enamel or cause problems. At home strips are ok but tend to cause a checkerboard effect..they move and aren't as strong as trays made for you or a in office procedure. please feel free to email me with questions.

Really? According to my dentist overdoing the whitening tends to damage your teeth, if you have healthy teeth you can do it, but if you don't and you keep on doing it, it's the same effect as bleaching your hair and I don't think anybody will argue that bleaching your hair makes your hair healthier, additionally it increases the risk of mouth cancer.

I just tend to trust a dentist who I know is very good (I'm actually not the only one who flies to Germany for dental appointments and to see him) and who will advise me to not overdo something that would earn him money over some random person on the internet.

I'm not saying that whitening your teeth will absolutely ruin them, it does depend on your teeth and how often you do it, but it's not as harmless as a lot of people claim it is. Personally I prefer just having normal white teeth and not the fake whiter than white teeth that make you reach for the sunglasses. Those super white teeth look about as attractive as the trout pout caused by too much collagen injections in the lips.

My dentist strongly discouraged me from doing this. He won't make the molds for me. My enamel is thin and I need to use toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Bleaching makes them more sensitive.

If you have sensitive teeth or thin enemal , i would tend to agree with your dentist.
