Hi. Newbie here. May I ask: What is the difference between being a "Submissive" or a "Slave". From what I've read so far, Submissives set more rules...and Slaves only take orders? Could anyone elaborate? Thanks!

There is no set definition of sub and/or slave and you will find that everyone has their opinions. If you'd like to read all of them, there's a search function found at the top right of the page. Lots and lots of forum discussions have this topic.

Its all subjective.  There are as many definitions as there are M/s relationships.  In my opinion....yes, a submissive does still have limits and "rules" if you want to call them that,  where as a slave has given up all of that along with his or her will to the Owner.  i considered myself a submissive until the day that it occurred to me that His happiness, fulfillment, pleasure were what brought me mine.

Nope.  Jali should've asked "Will someone please slap me now!"
Nah, some would say "that's topping from the bottom!"

hehe

ok, now I feel bad to the OP..

irishbynature, there is no hard and fast rule, what it really comes down to is, some people like to call themselves slaves and other people like to call themselves submissives....yet a slave submits and a submissive submits...now the bone of contention here may be,, who submits more, longer and under what circumstance....and thats just an individual thing between the two people having the relationship.

Like we cant say slaves make no decisions, I make decisions all the time, yet I'm a slave....but perhaps the difference is that I'm making the decisions based around what I know Master has told me etc..but see then see you could say the same thing about a submissive.

You could say a submissive is someone who submits part-time and a slave is someone who submits full time..but then there are slaves out there who see themselves as slaves yet arent in a day to day live-in relationship with their Master/Mistresses....so there goes that explanation down the drain,....

Why we are all kidding around is,, this question gets asked so much...and really there is no exact answer...nor I doubt will there ever be....well unless Master tells me the answer and then..well thats that..its Law *grin*

Oh this is easy...

You can always spot a slave because they all call themselves slaves, submissives are harder because they also call themselves sub, subbie, brat, domme (kidding), and of course submissive.

Also, doesn't it have a lot to do with how the 'top' describes him/herself.  A "Master" has a "slave", a "Dom" has a "sub".  Again, it will be all over the place, because everyone labels differently.

Katy,

You are spot on.  I have seen slaves I wouldn't let serve my submissive and I have seen bottoms who are more slave than anything I have ever seen.  Since people get to choose their own label, everyone wants the one that looks all bright and shiny and since SLAVE sounds so hot, many choose it.

People are SO hung up on labels I actually get emails lambasting me for being a "crappy" dominant.  I don't care as the sort of women I seek, aren't interested in the surface labels and bs, but to many there isn't anything else.

I just wish I could "force" everyone to watch a hot gay Top play and most of these people would fucking pass out at how disciplined their bottoms are, how extreme their play and D/s is.

Slavejail,
Thanks for the reply and information. I'm sure you get this question alot, (to the point it's nerveracking),  but it's nice that YOU took the time. Again, thanks for the great attitude

I just simply do not know...so many definitions....so many viewpoints...so much angst goes with this question....I guess all you can do is find your Dominant half and see what the two of you wish to label yourselves....be well...Tempting

When I was submissive to Himself, I knew I had the will to walk. The choice to walk and the ability to walk away without looking back though I never had the desire to do any such thing. I knew I became his slave when I lost the will, the choice and the ability to walk away. My service has not changed, what I have deep inside has not changed, how I feel about him has not changed, the flow of power did not shift or alter.. it is as it always has been between us but I know and he knows I am not capable of turning the knob which opens to the door to living in something other than an M/s relationship with him. I no longer have the freedom to choose.

Celeste
