RedMagic1 -> FetLife Policy Officially Sanctions Blacklists (5/16/2011 3:01:52 PM)

It is a sometimes-contentious issue here that CollarMe has a no-blacklist policy.  However, at least provisionally, FetLife has just taken exactly the opposite stance.  The FetLife Caretakers (more or less the equivalent of moderators on CM) have approved the existence of a discussion group on Fet in which people start threads like, "I think User X is violating the terms of service, could someone do something about it please."  Others in the group then file reports, and, if the Caretakers take action, the discussion is closed to additional comments, but the name of the user, links to the profile, etc., are left up for public view.

There has been no from-the-top announcement about this yet, and, honestly, I have to wonder how long the vigilante group is going to last.  The possibilities for abuse are obvious.  I thought it worth mentioning here, because Fet appears to be at a crossroads in its development.  How the leadership comes down on this issue will significantly affect the character of the web site, going forward.

A link to an active discussion about the group's existence is below.  You need a Fet profile to access it.

Based upon what I saw there, it's run by a bunch of yutzes. I am not surprised by your news.

NuevaVida -> RE: FetLife Policy Officially Sanctions Blacklists (5/16/2011 3:23:30 PM)

I browsed through that group earlier today and found it suspect.  Why must an entire group of regular users be formed to report TOU violations?  If someone sees a violation, just report to the caretakers.  What I saw on that group were people creating links to violations (pics of minors, for example) and saying "Look! A violation!"

juliaoceania -> RE: FetLife Policy Officially Sanctions Blacklists (5/16/2011 3:26:41 PM)

I do not care much for fetlife. It was not easy to navigate or have discussions. If they are allowing users to behave this way, it makes it even less appealing to go there much. There will be many people who feel the opposite, obviously, so for them this is a godsend.

playfulotter -> RE: FetLife Policy Officially Sanctions Blacklists (5/16/2011 3:36:12 PM)

I never go to FetLife unless someone sends me a message and that is very rare...I just hate the format there but love the format here!

I see no "official sanction" anywhere (unless I missed it), and you do know that anyone can start a group over there and no one has to approve it, right? Have you reported it to caretakers?

That FetLife would even permit such is reason enough to not visit there although I agree with others on the formatting of the site. I can't fathom how any person of even moderate intelligence would think that a blacklist is a good idea or cannot see how easily this device (even if well intentioned) could be subverted.

According to the group's members, the FL caretakers have approved the group.  There has been no official announcement from FL about this group, but they are aware of its operation.

RedMagic1 -> RE: FetLife Policy Officially Sanctions Blacklists (5/16/2011 3:54:22 PM)

Cali, the group owner has stated in multiple posts, including a sticky at the top of the group home page, that the Caretakers authorized creation of the group.  I have no independent verification of this.

Edited to add: the thread I linked to is an official report to the Caretakers about the group.

LadyPact -> RE: FetLife Policy Officially Sanctions Blacklists (5/16/2011 3:56:14 PM)

I won't repeat what I said there over here.  I'll just give My generic comment.

I'm actually against blacklisting.  I'm certainly against anyone other than Moderators being judge and jury.  It's not that hard to report something and allowing the powers that be take care of it.

Thank you, Red, for making this information available.

I saw the sticky after NV pointed it out. A thread in the suggestion box, however, isn't an official report to caretakers.

I think moderation is good when I am a moderator.

Other than that? not so much.

Shocking, I know.

DarkSteven -> RE: FetLife Policy Officially Sanctions Blacklists (5/16/2011 5:59:12 PM)

If I can just get all the other male Doms there blacklisted.... [:)]

HannahLynHeather -> RE: FetLife Policy Officially Sanctions Blacklists (5/16/2011 6:14:02 PM)

i made a profile there, didn't like the layout of the site and decided to close the account. i had to send an email requesting they delete it. they didn't, instead they sent me an email trying to persuade me not to close. i replied that i didn't like the way the site was setup, and to just close the account.

they wrote back to try persuade me not to close it...i replied...this went on for about 2 weeks before they finally closed the account. stupid fucking set up. i want my account closed and i have to argue with them for a couple weeks to close it!! my advice to one and all? stay the fuck away from there, it sucks.

Honestly, why would anyone care?

Life is too short. Go out and enjoy it.

NuevaVida -> RE: FetLife Policy Officially Sanctions Blacklists (5/16/2011 10:23:37 PM)

Fet closed the group.  Apparently there were too many complaints about it.

LadyPact -> RE: FetLife Policy Officially Sanctions Blacklists (5/16/2011 10:37:13 PM)

Confirmed.  The final post to the group has been listed.

That is the one thing I didn't care for at FetLife. Anyone and his dog can start a group. And there are so many overlapping groups as well, which only dilutes conversations. It's amazing how many members on that site are...(trying to think of a word that isn't condescending)...well let's just say they don't filter themselves, nor do they seem to have the intellect to do so. (Sorry, I tried not to be condescending.)

NocturnalStalker -> RE: FetLife Policy Officially Sanctions Blacklists (5/17/2011 3:33:52 AM)

I hope to God I'm not seeing a display of "website pride."
