FR to you southerners

Grits = POLENTA, and I think the Italians were messing with corn meal a bit before the south came to be.  So stuff your dietary bias.

Gastronomically,
Some Knucklehead in NJ

Hmmm... since corn came from the new world, how were the Italians messing with it first?

Quite simple Tazzy my dear, the Italians got corn from the "new world" well before the founding of the colonies.  Now if you want to get into the Native Americans (who were here before anyone else) then yes they had about a 4500 year head start on the Italians.  Calling it a "southern" dish though shows (to me at least) a huge blind spot in the history of the dish.

Quite simply, the Natives had it long before the Italians ever decided to look to the new country, let alone before the first settlers got here.

“As for grits,” says Algood, “the word ‘grits’ can refer to any coarsely ground grain, but it is commonly used to mean hominy grits. It’s all just corn, and grits are simply not ground as fine a corn meal. Hominy is the dried kernel of corn after the outside hull and germ have been removed through a long soaking process in an alkaline solution.

“Hominy is a native American food dating back at least 5,000 years, and was one of the first foods the Indians gave to the European colonists,” says Algood. “It’s the very same product as polenta. Since Italy only got corn meal for their polenta by way of Native Americans, grits has at least a 4,500-year head start on polenta!”

Hmpf... trying to steal my peoples food.

Before the arrival of corn from the New World in the 15th or 16th century, polenta was made with such starches as farro, chestnut flour, millet, spelt or chickpeas.[1]

Grits and polenta were not the same.. the Italians decided later on to use it instead of the other ingredients listed above.

It is attacking someone personally, which is what the opening post does in and of itself....

Pretty much says that being liberal makes you crazy....if that ain't personal, I don't know what is

Yes it does. Kinda reminded me of this thread...

or this one...

Same bullshit, just coming from the other side.

Funny.... I do not remember saying this was exclusively a right wing thing, that is something I see another poster doing (and we all know which one i am speaking of)

No you didn't. And it's not. We have a lot on both sides of the fence and a few in the middle. Thats the wonderful thing about bigots, they come in all flavors.

Dont forget the death panels!

Well if we do, I am sure someone will bring them up again to remind us.[8D]

tazzygirl -> RE: It's True (5/29/2011 3:19:09 PM)

I always will. Cant point fingers on one side, boi, and not have three point back.

You want to bring up the left mistakes.... then bring up the right as well so I dont have too.

Bias and bigotry always comes in many flavors... remember?

Gee, I did a search with the term "Conservatism and Sociopathy" and got 828,000 results (0.09 seconds)

Articles dealing with Tea bag party members berating a man with Parkinson's disease outside a doctor's office kind of got my attention. see for yourself

Funny thing, I have come across articles of people complaining about the government giving disaster aid for natural disasters.

quote:

During George W. Bush’s presidency, the response to Hurricane Katrina was a portent of a new standard that Republicans in the 112th Congress are continuing with spending cuts to programs that assist the poor and serve the general population. Republicans have proposed cuts to FEMA, severe weather warning systems, earthquake and tsunami monitoring programs, and myriad other public safety programs established to protect every region of the United States. After a tornado that leveled most of Joplin, Missouri killed 124 (at last count) in the deadliest storm since records have been kept, Republican majority leader Eric Cantor said, “If there is support for a supplemental, it would be accompanied by support for having pay-fors to that supplemental.” Cantor’s statement means any emergency funding Congress approves is tied to spending cuts equal to the cost of the disaster relief. source

What is funny is that conservatives will rail against government handouts, but as soon as disaster strikes them, they have their fucking hands out.

Conservatives have no social responsibility, compassion, or care about their fellow man or woman, unless the people in question has money, then they care.

Marc2b -> RE: It's True (5/30/2011 1:02:50 PM)

Christ all fuckin' mighty! Here we go again with another bullshit "science proves were normal and they're retarded or evil or whatever," bogus, piece of shit, study.

Throw this shit on the trash heap along with that MRI proves conservatives stupid (or whatever the hell it was) thread.

Crap like this is used to "validate" the de-humanizing of the other... a necessary step on the path that leads to atrocity.
