Insertables - Pro's and Cons - 5/29/2011 11:22:06 PM

I am hoping someone can either give me a link to the information or give a short lesson on the pro's and cons of different types types of insertables.
And when I say types, I mean: Plastic vs Latex vs Glass vs Steel (vs whatever)

Over the last few years I have read differing opinions but I'm hoping to get a more up to date opinion on  . . . . . . . . . well, which is better.

Specifically, I'm asking about plugs but once I started thinking about it, it got me curious as to the overall opinion of which is better for all insertables. I kept hearing glass is the best due to being less pores', therefore more sanitary. Then I heard steel was an excellent option but I'm fairly certain steel is pores'. And, I'm asking because I wanted to buy a plug for a sub and I found a steel one for a reasonable price but I prefer to buy quality.

ie:
Which is more sanitary?
Which 'feels' better?
Is weight an issue with an extended wear plug?

Thank you in advance. I appreciate any clarification and opinions.

From a purely personal perspective...

I have had no problem completely sanitising any 'insertables' made from latex, glass, rigid plastic or metal. As long as you follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning then there shouldn't be a problem.

When it comes to butt plugs, I prefer latex for extended wear. This is simply because they're more flexible, although I have to be careful because I show an allergic reaction to some kinds of latex. Flexible means I know I can move around without it getting too uncomfortable.

However the flexibility of latex means it is more likely to split. At this point you need to bin the plug as it becomes simply too difficult to sanitise effectively.

Glass is second best, but it's heavier and less flexible, so internal length becomes more of an issue. I love the sensations of it - being more rigid makes the sensations more intense for me.

Metal is very heavy and I find they give me abdominal cramps. I don't know why - maybe it's muscle spasms in reaction to the weight - I dunno.

IMO - flexible for extended wear, rigid for short-term play.

I'm sure others will have different opinions, and hopefully their answers will help you make your decision

Thank you for the response myotherself. May I ask clarifying questions?

1) Isn't glass and steel roughly the same weight? If so, what makes steel less appealing?
2) Is weight an issue in keeping one in?

Fire away!

1) Isn't glass and steel roughly the same weight? If so, what makes steel less appealing?

I don't know if it's real or just psychological, but steel always feels heavier. Steel just doesn't feel as comfortable as glass. I really can't explain it - my strong preference is just for glass (which is prettier too...lol)

2) Is weight an issue in keeping one in?

For me - absolutely! The anal sphincter is just a ring of muscles, and eventually if you're trying to 'clench' all the time to keep something heavy in there, you're going to get tired...lol. I find that after half an hour or so I start to get stomach cramps and all sorts of nastiness follows (I won't share - you might be eating!)

But if it comes down to him using a toy on me during a play session, I'd opt for glass every time. The sensation is lovely!

Thank you myotherself, I appreciate your insight.

Kinda figures, I knew I should ask prior to ordering. lol!
I ordered a stainless steel one - so 1/2 hour for steel? . . . . . . grrrr - going in search of something for extended use. lol!

it really all depends on personal preference and your body's reaction to the materials. I have a male friend who has a gorgeous one (like the one in your pic) that he can wear for hours. For me, it's half an hour.

I'd suggest you experiment - see what works best for your partner

And not to get off topic but every time the topic of plugs comes up it reminds me of going looking for a tail with my first sub.
We had gone to 3 different adult toy stores around Denver before finding a place that had one. The thing was big enough to threaten a horse with. She and I just stared at it - totally uncertain if it was a novelty thing or truly suppose to fit. Of course, I was dumb enough to ask - so the sales guy launches in to details of just how to get it in. . . . . . "it takes a bit of work" and "it could take as long as 15 minutes or more to get it in"  - yeah, that ended any desire (from either of us) for her to have a tail.

Silicone is non-porous and chemically inert.
To clean it you can boil it if you wish.

The caveat for silicone is you have to be very careful if you use silicone lubricants as silicone lubes degrade silicone toys.

We kind of like this lube for butt play: http://www.amazon.com/Exotics-Original-Formula-6-Ounce-Bottles/dp/B001GAOGQW/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1306773735&sr=1-1
Amazon offers it directly for less; it just takes longer to ship...the option is on the right.

Thank you Angelika.
I'm not sure I've even taken notice of plugs made from silicone. I'll put that at the top of my list.

Personally I prefer glass anal plug over the flexible ones, the main reason is the latex or silicon has a smell on it after several times of use.

That alone is enough to make me buy glass.

Choice has been made. lol!

Oh, filing isn't good enough. I'd need filing and sanding down to a very fine grain. I'd also need to be certain that whatever type of steel I was using, didn't have poisonous alloys in it.
