Depends. Is education in that language widely available to people not of that ethnic origin? If so, then no, because discrimination is choosing between people based on something they can't change.

So if you specify they have to speak Hindi because (the key word in that sentence being 'because') you know only people from Indian backgrounds usually speak Hindi, then that's discrimination. If you specify they have to speak Spanish, which is widely offered to students at school, then no it isn't, because people of all ethnic backgrounds speak Spanish.

It's been one of those days, when someone left the Dungeon door unlocked and the trolls started roaming... and , during those moments, especially since Harry Potter is too Vanilla to get here, we need to be extra careful... (Or, in other words, it's too easy to get mixed with the trolls. Especially since I'm not here long enough to know everyone well enough )

And yet, it isn't.  The company I work for has offices all over the world.  Customer/client facing employees in those countries are required to be bilingual at *least*.  Requiring employees to possess a certain skill that is a valid business need isn't ever going to be considered discrimination by anyone sane.

You run across an ad, lets say for a restaurant. It says that you have to have experience, which you do, and that you must have wine knowledge, which you do, and that you must have some knowledge of alcohol, which you do. So you gather up your resume and off you go. You get to the interview, they look you over, then ask what drinks you are comfortable making. That wasnt in their ad. This is a known way to discriminate based upon looks.

The same could be said for asking for a bilingual speaking person without stating what the other language is. Maybe im just too jaded but I have seen instances like these time and time again.

Once upon a time I wanted to be a surgeon so I went and applied to a hospital, but the bastards refused to even interview me because I don't have a medical degree. It's pure fucking discrimination, I can't help not having a medical degree! I was only 19, how can you expect a 19 year old to have been to university? It was blatantly just a sneaky way of discriminating against me for my age. It's disgraceful what these kinds of places are allowed to get away with.

That's the biggest bunch of ifs and maybes I've ever seen you post, tazzy. You didn't ask the question 'Would anyone consider is discrimination if an ad stated someone to be bilingual, and the other language they are seeking is never specified until you go to the interview, and then they deliberately use that as a method of screening out undesirable candidates for other reasons?' You've changed the question in a dishonest way.

But fine. Let's take the new question. Even in that situation, that's not discriminating against someone who can't speak a language, that's discriminating against someone who doesn't fit some other criterion and using language as an excuse. That's not what Lisa's complaining about - she's objecting to being expected to speak another language full stop, because English is the 'language of her country'.

No i didnt change the question. The question is still the same. They ran an ad that wasnt fully upfront about what they were seeking... a bilingual can mean english and french... or dutch and german. Someone who has knowledge of acohol turns into a bartender, which again is not in the ad.

Again, my question had little to do with Lisa's and everything to do with a question I raised along the same topic.
