As long as the cops stay on their side of the fence while formulating an investigation, then, sure, deny away and not compromise anything. Once they step foot across that line and enter private property on a warrant, the veil of secrecy comes down. They must produce proper explanations instantly when asked. If their intelligence is off and a person is not where they expected them to be, then its too bad if anything is compromised. They pretty much compromised it themselves, when bad data leads to busting down the wrong door.
