This thread is proof that threads can go as off-topic as one could imagine ... so long as one or more mods are taking part in the off-topic postings.

Personally, I like off-topic thread drift, but I do wish it was either a) allowed or b) not. As it stands, it's applied so inconsistently it's a bit of a joke.

DavidLee44UK -> RE: moderation interpretation? (6/26/2011 5:21:48 AM)

one rule for one one rule for another

RF-

My apologies, I had assumed that everything that could be said about the moderation had, and you are correct; I was off topic.Let's see if there is anything left to say on topic, as I was the one guilty of leading it astray.

Please understand - I'm not anti off-topic, quite the reverse. I enjoy thread drift and I also find I learn more about people through reading the direction they take a thread (for good or bad, depending on the person) than if things stay rigidly on-topic.

Also, I've learned more about certain subjects when they're on the fringe than if they'd stayed "in the centre".

I'd vote for allowing threads to drift a great deal more than is currently the case, for the above reasons. My experience also is (on more generalist, non-BDSM forums of various types) that the forums that are very narrow in their interpretation of drift tend to be the more dull and stilted. Now that could merely be because the sort of people who only want to contribute to narrow-interest threads are more dull people, but I suspect it’s that online conversations, like real-life ones, are better and more interesting when they follow a broader path.

Just a thought, that’s all.

I would too if it was close to the topic in some way. Often you get assholes and bitches that enjoy trying to derail with jokes, completely different topics and complete nonsense in general. [:D]

I'm an occasional asshole at times, I've staked my claim, get what's left.[8D]

heh ... the thing is, generally, when a thread goes "sharp left" off-topic, it's because someone's decided to make a personal insult. Since those are covered under another topic/T&C, it should be possible to allow threads to drift, while still weeding out the arsehole posts.

Obviously that's still going to leave you in a deep hole at least half the time but hey - I can only do so much to help in these situations ;)

I admit I find the above to be totally annoying.  A couple of posts joking around and such doesn't bother me, but when it becomes pages of bantering, I think it's rude to the OP and anyone still interested in what the original topic was.  P&RS is a great place for fun bantering, not in a thread that was apparently important enough for the OP to post and others to reply to.  Even if the thread has run its course, people coming in late in the game and catching up might find it useful, and have something else to say about it.  But finding 3 or so pages of casual bantering could easily prevent them from adding anything, at that point.  I know that's happened to me, and let's face it - what I have to share is extremely valuable. [8D]

So there's my little soap box moment, here.  I've done some joking and bantering in threads myself, but around my third "banter" post, I start feeling uncomfortable about doing it, and stop responding to that stuff.

VideoAdminAlpha -> RE: moderation interpretation? (6/26/2011 1:04:54 PM)

We tend to let more thread drift happen in offtopic and random than other areas also.

if you want to talk further about the fucking topic, do so. how the fuck do the jokes and banter prevent that?
