You are the second person who mentioned the divorce rate. I was wondering, what is your take on the concept of divorce in relation to the creation of the pill?

There's a divorce pill?

pD

Yes.

Skankorama sulfate.

I love Ron.

Thanks sunshine!

I'm actually a introvert- at least that's what that portion of the Myers-Briggs result was when I took it a few weeks ago for another class of mine. :) I don't mind a heated debate. I don't mind people criticizing what I have to say, as long as they are polite about it. You weren't nasty in your approach and so there was no need for me to be nasty (though that's not my nature anyway, sometimes it is necessary to go there). Yeah, the part involving me I know no one will able to help me with but to get a bit of a global perspective certainly does contribute to the portion of the paper where I have to think about how much has changed beyond the American borders (which is what the entire class revolved around except when it came to the Vietnam and Cold Wars). It was actually shocking to me that after all the assignments we had that were more concrete, they threw this theoretical assignment at us. I was not prepared for it, especially not for a final paper. I do tend to do a lot of my thinking and debating online as I go to school online as well.

nothing would be different being that I was on the pill when I got pregnant and had my tubes tied shortly thereafter.

If I had not had a child still nothing would have changed. I would have used other forms of birth control that are widely available among them being abstinence, condoms and ligation.

The US has always had a high rate of divorce compared to other countries.

Well, for one thing... I'd have been born.
Ummmm wait a sec

PS

Sorry, I forgot this is in an academic mileu here, that should have been stated as 'ex ante The Pill' and 'ex post The Pill,' respectively.

Missokyst -> RE: The Pill- What if it was never invented? (6/20/2011 9:27:30 PM)

The only thing the 60's did for me was make it seem like everyone was having sex and like it or not, they wanted me to join in. Taking the pill at my age was not going to happen.

The pill was not a factor in my life because I didn't start taking it till I met the man I was going to marry, in 1970. I did take it for a short while during my engagement and the first few months in my marriage, then I got pregnant. Second child was the result of a condom which slipped off during some rough sex. My third child happened because my husband wanted a son.. and then he left me about 6 months later for a nice Christian woman because I would not choose to be "reborn".

So there I was in the 70's, divorced, with 3 kids, no child support, no alimony and working to keep things afloat. This is what a lot of us did back then, and 3 kids or not, I was not going to stay in that marriage. The pill, the kids, the necessity of finding a job were all just part of tough choices to be made.

Okay, I can see where you are coming from. A friend of mine thought that the divorce rate would be less as a result of less percentages of women cheating due to their ability to get pregnant.
LOWER percentages. Divorce rate would be LOWER.

Joe has less money than Bill.
Joe's IQ is lower than BIll's.
Joe has fewer apples than BIll.

I don't know why in the fuck an ex-chemist is teaching remedial English. Must be some weird kink.

I tried the pill when I was younger and it bloated me and especially my legs. I lost my sex drive and I all around didnt like it. Personally I cannot stand the pill. The IUD either. I find condoms work the best for me.

~FR~

The academicians here would possibly better contribute to the discission if they were to were to explain the impetus behind such inane "questions," -to be charitable about it-, in the first place, and perhaps indulge the rest of us as to what particular 'critical thinking' would be behind such venture as requiring a student to write the imposed papers in service to academia's abstemiousness to r/l experience themselves, and disinclination to allow any experience of others in pursuit of that. Explain your own abilities in that regard. The questions proposed indicate lack of that ability in most instances, to be honest.

Where in r/l have you actually come up upon the things you propose to students; which by such insistence you impose upon them, as it turns out, being just for your own entertainment?

Enlighten us here.

SweetDommes -> RE: The Pill- What if it was never invented? (6/20/2011 11:32:54 PM)

Without the pill, I would no longer be here. I get suicidal once a month when I'm not on it - for me, it's a miracle pill.

I have to spread out my answers into 5 pages for these three questions which I am finding to be pretty challenging so any help would be greatly appreciated!

That's the whole point. Academia is supposed to be challenging. If you find you're too tied up in it, take a break, get away from it and then when you return to it, you will (hopefully) have a fresh perspective to help answer the assigned questions.

Edited to add:

I have decided to ask the opinion of other people to gather some more ideas to add to the paper

Yes, but they aren't your ideas.

Edwynn -> RE: The Pill- What if it was never invented? (6/21/2011 12:59:40 AM)

And neither is the nearly homogeneous 'Brave New World' impetus behind numerous instructors' similar questions so ubiquitous in academia now from their own ideas either, just so we understand things here.

Oh please. Any student who can't come up with their own ideas is only cheating themselves. This has nothing to do with the lack of originality (or otherwise) of instructors.

Edwynn -> RE: The Pill- What if it was never invented? (6/21/2011 1:34:16 AM)

Thanks for that clarification and facile excuse for the double standard.

Unfortunately, it being academia, there are still stipilations involved which in fact run counter to the proposal of origionality, which your response conveys all too well.
