SailingBum -> Who has the slickest computer configuration (7/1/2011 12:19:47 AM)

I wanna hear form all you puter nerds...

I happen to like my setup 4 computers in the house 2 for work and 2 for play. I access any CPU in the house via Team Viewer. The CPU in my bedrom is connects to a 26" flat screen, the one in my den is connected to a 40" flat screen. I either stream or download my fav tv stuff so I've not had a cable tv bill in a couple years.

The ppl that have stopped by want my setup. I like to hear about your setup so I can improve mine

1. A fairly "fuck-me!" home setup, housed in a giant CoolerMaster (heh) case using multi-layer heatsinks instead of noisy fans, and one near-silent fan to cool, plus one on the graphics card that's set to run near-silent; runs the fat-wire apps and acts as a data repository, also used as a PVR (remotely via TeamViewer), and P2P (membership only sites for motorsports) server.

2. "Work" laptop. Linked to nothing but the secure VPN stuff necessary for work (SC level job, see).

3. "Personal" laptop; just a upper-middle range Vaio, though it's coming to the end of its natural life and I'm replacing it with a ultra-mini notebook setup, possibly Vaio again but tempted by this:

http://www.slashgear.com/asus-unveils-eee-pad-transformer-tabletnotebook-option-running-android-honeycomb-04123053/

Problem is I have borderline carpal tunnel problems and I suspect buying something with a very small keyboard may prove to be a dodgy move. OTOH it’s cool tech, so fuck it :)

My current laptop uses TeamViewer to control the "Home" PC and drag video files of TV programmes over when I don't like what's on TV (I'm working and living a fair way from home ATM), plus some older games (Madden 2008, BloodBowl, etc) on a Steam hookup. Since I don't get much time for games and thus the laptop's used mostly for net stuff I figure it might be an idea to get something smaller, except ...

4. Motorola Atrix with "laptop dock" - ultra-mini notebook powered by the phone. Not as crazy as it sounds because the dual-core Motorola build is plenty beefy enough to run apps and power the notebook, but Motorola have decided to implement a FireFox browser on it, rather than going for the open Android 2.2 "Froyo" build that the phone runs (why, FFS?!) and I detest FF with a passion. I'm going to play with it for a couple of weeks and if I don't like it (and I suspect I won't) I'll chuck it on eBay and put the money towards a proper fuck-off notebook, again probably Vaio as I like the build quality and Sony's proprietary apps are usually really useful - their "VAIO Update" system is excellent, for example.

5. Software: Home PC runs Win7, Office, Project and a host of other stuff, too long to list. "Personal" laptop runs Win7 and mostly web & personal apps, but has Office & Project on it coz it's nicer to use than my "work" laptop, so I sometimes transfer files via secure VPN (and encrypted) and work on the "personal" one (files on the "personal" one are electronically shredded afterwards, for obvious reasons).

The Atrix runs a 2.2 Froyo build, waiting for 2.3 Gingerbread but as it's Motorola that could take months. Doesn't bother me though coz there's nothing in Gingerbread I really need, it's just on a "would be nice" list. Phone runs several Android apps, but not that many as I only got it on Wednesday :) Really like it BTW, but not as "user friendly" as the Galaxy S or Sensation. Killer cores though, and build quality that makes an HTC look like a pikey’s plaything. Oh and the voice control really works, in terms of being able to dictate replies to SMS and mails, although the widescreen touch-screen keyboard is also excellent.

Are you sure? ;)

PeonForHer -> RE: Who has the slickest computer configuration (7/1/2011 4:06:22 AM)

No. On second thoughts, the TV could be a microwave oven.

heh.

What gets me about modern IT is it's just so easy ... I'm not that techie, and yet I can get my phone to act as a nexus that uses whichever broadband hotpot I'm passing (or mobile net if not) to connect and deal with my emails, work & private (on separate accounts, obviously), SMS messages, Facebook updates, sat nav when I'm walking around (and switch to driving mode when in the car dock), voice recog to dictate messages and emails, google voice recog (so when I'm out and about I don't have to type anything, I just say "find Chinese restaurants in <wherever>" and it makes several suggestions, lets me review what others have to say about them then navigates me to the one I choose. Want to look up a contact to phone them? No need to type; either just say their name or "draw" their name on the screen, one letter at a time. Fast as fuck, especially when you've got 700+ people in your "Contacts" section.

I love it. It's like being bathed in the dual warm glows of technology and companionship - as an example; a good mate of mine is in hospital with a serious condition but he's got his smartphone with him so his mates like me are playing games with him (in shifts coz we all work, but we can spare an hour or 2 here and there), sending him well wishes, updating on how things are going for him, and generally keeping his spirits up, despite the fact he's incapacitated apart from his head and hands. Nice :) Even he's amazed at how chipper and “not alone” he feels compared to the last time he was in there. And when there's no-one free online he can play games on his phone, or listen to music on it, or read his books via the e-reader on it, and download more of them when he's finished what he has. With modern stuff you don't have to carry around 20 different devices, weighing you down; one lightweight device does pretty much the lot.

Technology’s only any use when it does something good, and modern stuff does lots of it, easy-peasy.

*snort*

farglebargle -> RE: Who has the slickest computer configuration (7/1/2011 4:34:37 AM)

Let's see... Intel 2200 with a couple of gigs of memory, running Fedora 15. Analog monitor to a 19" 4:3 monitor and HDMI out to a 25" HDTV. I use Xmonad for a window manager, and it makes anything Microsoft or Apple is selling look like it's from the 15th Century. 2.1 speakers. Unicomp Model M clone. There's a KVM switch, so Wife#1 can use her Dell GX280 running XP. She also has a Toshiba laptop running Win 7 which she uses most of the time anyway.

In the living room, there's our MythTV server and a terabyte of storage for other A/V content. I should pay more attention to it sometimes, as I once found about 100GB of Dora the Explorer on the harddrive. THAT is plugged into a vintage Sony 4:3 CRT.

In the kitchen is some generic HDTV from Wal-Mart bolted to the wall. That's fed by either basic cable OR an Asus O!Play ( Hey kids, Gilligan's Island or Magilla Gorilla? ) for watching video off of any other harddrive in the house.

We both have Gen1 Motorola Droids, and I carry a rooted B&N Color Nook ( also Android ) which I use to read comic books and stuff while I'm on a bus to work or something.

Work gives me a HP laptop, but I only bother with that for work.

TreasureKY -> RE: Who has the slickest computer configuration (7/1/2011 6:34:28 AM)

I can't expound upon the "setup" as that is Firm's territory.  All I can tell you is that we have at least 54 terabytes of movies, television series and books.  We still carry cable, though it is rarely watched.  Actually, all of it is rarely watched... I'd be surprised if Firm and I sat down to even six hours a month to watch anything.

I've requested a 72" electric screen and projector because I can't stand the ugly flatscreen in the livingroom and space it takes.  I don't like a computer or television in the bedroom... to me, that discourages relaxation and other pursuits.  [;)]

wandersalone -> RE: Who has the slickest computer configuration (7/1/2011 7:31:44 AM)

hiya SB, glad to see you got rid of that photo of the grouchy man whoever he was [:)]

I have um... it is kind of like a little square thing and I open the lid and press a button and then somehow, magically I can send messages to people. Yeah I know, it is pretty damn flash!!!! (kind of like me [:D])

Peon, I have one of those tv things too but to be honest, I haven't switched it on in at least 3 weeks so it mainly is used to place my incense and some candles on.

DomImus -> RE: Who has the slickest computer configuration (7/1/2011 8:40:50 AM)

I am only running two computers presently. This one - some recent HP quad core refurb I got for a song. Don't know much about the specs but it's way mo faster than the antique I replaced it with in April. This one runs Windows 7 which I have developed a loathe/hate relationship with. I have 7 terabytes of storage on this pc via a handful of USB hard drives and the internal drive.

My other pc is a Celeron 500 running Windows 98SE. I only use it as an interface for my Johnson J-Station modeling guitar amplifier and as a keyboard (as in piano and organ) emulator for recording. That Native Instruments B4 (Hammond B3 emulator) is the shit. Jon Lord meets Neal Doughty meets Seth Justman - all in software.

I have a non descript Sanyo 32" LCD television with an old 1968 Pioneer power amp driving two equally non descript Pioneer speakers. I have a Philips upscaling dvd player with HDMI. It has a USB port in the front. I download stuff I wanna watch and copy it over to a small USB hard drive and play it on the Philips. I have cable.

None of my computer/television/home entertainment gear generates any penis envy among my friends. My music room is a different story.

Then look elsewhere. I use what I've always used, a system I built out of bits and pieces I've collected here and there over the years.

I have a total of 6 desktop systems in various states of disassembly, just stacked up in a spare room, waiting for a need. Some of the components I use are really old, I have an IBM 3.5 drive that I've been using for 20 years, the sucker just keeps on working, it goes from one setup to the next.

DavidLee44UK -> RE: Who has the slickest computer configuration (7/1/2011 9:26:35 AM)

built mine has 16gb mem 3 hard disks equalling 3tb running under raid 5

has a cooling system dual graphics cards and quad processors

Yep.

I'd come to be quite cynical about tech developments in the last decade: they seemed frivolous and trivial. I think the development of wireless keyboards and mice was the last straw for me. While their makers were trumpeting these things as a ' a revolutionary breakthrough' and a 'must have', I was thinking 'Eh? Who cares? So you can have a desk without the standard two wires on it.' And I've ditched my wireless keyboard - the batteries inevitably conked out at the most irritating times. Even having a supply of rechargeables on hand didn't eliminate the irritation factor.

I was brought up to believe, like many, that by 2000, or 2010, or (whenever the hell the sci-fi-sounding-year), we'd have androids as our maids and butlers. We're so very, very far from that. Those things require a human-like intelligence in computers about which people were way too optimistic (or afraid) a couple of decades ago.

However, what the tech *has* done has been to connect us all in a way that has radically changed our lives. Hell, the Arab Spring shows it's played a major part in precipating revolutions, so great has this tech aided communications. So, in short, I'm back to loving tech stuff again - but for entirely different reasons to those for which I'd once hoped.

Me, my next addition is going to be a cute little netbook. Pretty cheap at £200 or less, but it'll enable me to stay online as I travel on the train, sit in most of favourite cafes, and while I'm dossing at friends' houses - and all for free.

Now all I need to do is get my mother to buy a lappy and get it connected. That way, I can wriggle out of at least some of the three-hour conversations she tortures me with every week in favour of short 'n' easy emails. Oh hell, I'd bless modern tech for that life-saver alone.[:)]

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Who has the slickest computer configuration (7/1/2011 10:35:13 AM)

I have a television!! I also have a desktop at home, which is deeply unhappy, and a laptop that I got for my 40th birthday. Yes, that was awhile ago.

I was waffling over a netbook, but now I have my Android phone, aka THE DEVIL! The internet, it is my newest appendage.

At the office, I inherited a three-workstation network, and a lovely IT guy to go with it. He is happy that I know what I am doing, I am less happy that I was not on the "inside" when this network was set up.

I'm sorry, but if I had to look at a bad cockshot on a 42" flatscreen, it would just do me in. [:D]

I'd probably become a fucking lesbian [:D][:D][:D]

ashjor911 -> RE: Who has the slickest computer configuration (7/1/2011 11:15:25 AM)

buy a grafic card, some of them have a serial port you can connect it to all of (new screens) & the PC original screen,
so its like you are connecting your PC to 2 screens, ( & keep your TV connected to the same screen, chose from remote)
Its easy,

I would recommend that you buy a ATI grafic card has DDR3 memory you may buy the 1 GB DDR3, Install it & install the new driver,
& you are good to go,
will provide pics later on how o do it,
works like a charm on my Laptop (s-vedio port), PC (serial port) on my home & office,
Its amazing.
