Congratulations on having stuff managed much better. It sucks not to know why something is happening. Before we found out I had a slipped disk I was always in serious pain an nobody knew why or would take my pain seriously till I started having side affects from an antibiotic that while we didn't realize was from antibiotic, it was similar to spine and disk damage, and dr was concerned and did an MRI and my slipped disk showed up .

When I started working out and eating better, I wasn't worried about weight loss, I was more concerned about feeling better and being more mobile, Weight was a concern partly, but it wasn't the primary focus. Primary was to start taking better care of myself. I actually went down from 330 to 305 working out moderately 3 xs a week an watching what I ate. I did treadmill for 5 minutes, as many leg crunches as I could stand, and marched in place for about 10 minutes.

But I stopped in march cause of the pain an other health shit , and am gaining it all back now. Though I don't go to the gym any more, I do go and play with dogs at the Homeward bound Golden Retriever Rescue.

TPB, I would like to add one thing LadyC's response about watching your diet. Set small, attainalbe goals. Say 1-2lb weight loss a week. If a month seems too long to stay on a diet of healthier eating, set a goal for 2 weeks. Or even 1 week. The main thing is to not set your goals so high or so far out that you get discouraged n give up. I've been there before and am still there. I was losing weight on my diabetic diet for several months. All of a sudden, I started gaining the weight back. But I hadnt changed my diet or anything else. My doctor was running tests for my diabetes and found out my thyroid was non-functiong. Now on meds for that n they are slowly working. Good luck TPB.

You do not need a treadmill to walk.
You know what a brisk walk was because of the treadmill... and you can walk now. You can also try to find a program that offers aquacize.
Having a slipped disk is no reason to not eat a healthy diet, tfb. Any extra weight You carry is going to make it much harder on your back.

Conditioners? I never heard of those, just the shampoo's. Selson was really hard on the skin burnt like mad, it's why I don't use that shampoo any more. Nazirol helps and doesn't burn I can even use it on my face. but like I said I didn't know there's a conditioner to the shampoo.

Seriously TFB, have you ever tried the dandruff conditioners?  I bet it would help make a huge difference and you can avoid having to wash your hair as much - so you won't have the issues with your hair drying out.

TFB,
You don't really look like you have dry hair. Most hair can safely be washed 3x/week especially in the summer when you sweat. If your hair is that dry, are you certain you are rinsing well?
And yes, Head and Shoulders makes a conditioner.
Don't use the shampoo just when symptoms show... that will not fix your problem.

Personally I wouldn't use most of the commercial dandruff products, because they tend to be rather aggressive, especially if you do have a skin condition that can get aggravated as they do tend to be a bit too harsh. Might be well worth looking into making your own, rose marine (sp) and cider vinegar tend to solve the problems quite often, to avoid the hair getting too dry, have some conditioner (if you have very dry hair olive oil or real mayonnaise products are quite good, don't know any recipes off the top of my head as I tend to have slightly more oily hair - my wop heritage - but just google for it) but don't apply them to your scalp, just your hair a few centimeters off the scalp, same with shampoos, use them on your scalp and then rinse.

The natural products are a bit of a pain to make but they work so much better (and cheaper) than shop bought products, a lot of them you canlast almost indefinitely, and you just make a batch and fill them into small containers (plastic or glass that are left overs from food - after cleaning them of course), then take the containers out a few hours before you need them, so you don't have to go through the process of making them all the time.

Also henna powder (perfect for hair and scalp, especially if you suffer from dandruff or any kind of fungal infection), dirt cheap, if you don't want the red tint, expose it to air and light for a while (open glass container which you stir regularly) and it loses the colour pigments, then mix a big batch and put it into several containers and use it once every 2 weeks as a conditioner or hair treatment, leave it on for a few hours (lots of other things you can mix in as well which will help with dandruff, like rosemarine or cider vinegar - if you have a plastic shower cap, it's ideal) you'll have really healthy and shiny hair that feels a lot thicker and your scalp just won't itch anymore, though it is important that you do rinse it out throughly. I would recommend a mix of egg, oil and sugar for the last conditioning treatment - which also helps to rinse it out completely as the mud can be a bit sticky, personally I usually go with the Pantene or Vidal Sassoon (sp) hair treatment as it seems to not upset my scalp but your reaction might be different and if you do have a brand that works for you, stick with it.

As to your weight, you HAVE to do something about it, it's a burden on your system and it doesn't help your skin condition one bit, try to cut out processed food and sugar, have fruit and veg available for snacks and keep on walking dogs, much much more effective than going to the gym, you don't need a treadmill, you can just walk and extend the walks a bit all the time, leg crunches you can do yourself, sit ups, push ups and any kind of aerobic exercise you can do yourself, doesn't matter how much you do, just that you notice you are getting better at it. And try and eat as little processed food or junk food as possible, tons of additives that really really mess with your system, not only your skin.

I try to rinse well, I have very thick hair, and it's long too, so sometimes I miss stuff, but most part I think I am getting it all out.

No it's not dry, normally in winter an stuff only wash about once a week cause it's how often it shows wear and tear, but it being summer, and I do sweat more an it is hot, I will wash more with the medicated shampoo, and not just when I have flair ups.

After much experimenting, I found that the generic dandruff shampoo works great. It is not as strong, and it leaves my hair in good shape, even my hairdresser approves. I have to wash my hair almost every day. I wet my hair and lather it, at the beginning of the shower, then leave it in while I bathe, rinsing it as I go to rinse my body.

Try it, it works for me.

Exercising in a swimming pool, in the water. The water provides some buoyancy which makes it easier on your joints, but also provides resistance which makes for a better workout. And it's just fun to be in the pool :)

Tfb finds that Nizoral does not irritate her skin.
It is a shampoo with ketonazole in it, which is an anti-fungal agent.

Generic dandruff shampoos usually work fine for just dandruff problems, with skin conditions they might be really painful as the skin is super sensitive and they really can burn like hell. I tend to get allergies, GP thought it was a fungal infection problem and kept on pushing some lotion at me, told her it would make it worse (especially since she didn't even test for fungal, dohhhh), in the end I was so pissed off I told her I would use it and I want an appointment for the next day, she almost fainted, I looked like a boiled lobster with blisters, much too aggressive and yes, freaking allergy. While it felt good to be able to say "Told ya so" the pain and discomfort really wasn't worth it, though now she tend to ask "Have you had it before?" and actually listens...

Aquacize is excercise in a pool. The water keeps you bouyant and so it is easy on your body's joints.

That it is! Daddy and I were at sunsplash in the wave pool in between the waves going off an we had a blast, he did push ups with me on his back, and he tried walking on his hands with me on his back, and I doggie paddled a bit, though it hurts really bad to do that right now. And I got one hell of a work out going against the current on the "lazy river" trying to get out and got swept down stream a bit. So I continued to fight the current cause I didn't wanna go back down the river, it took me a good 5 minutes, but I made it out, and all the way against current too.

Would a swimming cap or whatever you call it be a solution? Possibly treating your hair with a conditioner or cure before you go into the water, then trying to keep your scalp from getting wet and straight after you get out rinse it very very thourghly?

It's silly but I really liked the treadmill cause you could walk an walk an walk till you were winded, and then not have to walk home, which is a problem out around the block an stuff, if you get to far out before you realize you're pooped, you still gotta get back home or just stay where you are till you're not to pooped to go home. I also liked the privacy factor of doing it in your own home if you have a home treadmill. That way you can do it all hours of the night in all states of dress and weather.

It also keeps track of heart rate and calories burned, and can be kind of mindless, which can be soothing some days to mindlessly walk an walk an walk. I see people in the gyms walking while reading or listening to music or just zoned out in their own lil head space. Kinda reminds me of when I was a kid, I'd walk the play ground and read a book. I kept one eye on where I was going every now an then an the other eye on my book!

Mine is a skin condition. The same thing she says she has....

eta I am a fair skinned, freckle faced redhead, I know skin conditions-lol. Mom said the doctor told them to go ahead and put a dermatologist on retainer when he saw my complexion and hair.

I think part of the seriousness of the pain was I was already in irritated and itchy, before getting in the water, I didn't wanna wash my hair then go swimming then have to wash again. and after being out of the water just went to bed. In the past, the chlorine from the pool actually stopped a break out when it was bumpy on my hair line ironically, but the saltiness of the pool, combined with already being upset, ya, probably bad combination.

If I am on top of it better, and I wash my hair after being in a pool, weather chlorine or saline solution, then perhaps the scalp won't be so angry in the morning.

I have neuro dermatitis, also a skin problem that breaks out irregularly, usually when a bunch of factors collide (food, stress, pollen... sometimes just one of them) and I can't use the normal shampoos for dandruff, it's like having acid poured over my scalp, I seriously scream and whimper, and I have quite a high pain tolerance usually, so high that I can't try toys out on myself because it's just not comparable.

It took me a lot of experimenting, and a lot of money, to find out that the cheapest thing works best for me. The key is keeping up with it, and nipping it in the bud before it gets painful, for me. If I only washed my hair once or twice a week, I would be in tears every time the water hit it.

Me? They sent me once. I have talked to my dr about being in so much pain nothing's helping, cause I've taken muscle relaxers , while that was nice for knocking me out so I slept, it did nothing for pain, and ibuprofen 800 and an she said I could have cortisone injected into my spine, but I have to go to another dr to have it done. I think a nerve is being pinched by the slipped disk, cause I'm starting to have episodes of loosing my balance when I try to stand and or walk, like I'll be standing in line at the pharmacy or what ever an out of nowhere this weakness comes over me and my legs go weak and I almost fall, Or I stand up and my legs are for a moment like nope, we're not gonna support you an I wobble. A few times right after getting up I did have instances where I sat back down suddenly cause the legs just were not gonna do it. Thankfully I landed on the bed when they decided this, an not the floor. A few times I have been standing and lost my balance and did a whole stork on one foot thing, while I grabbed my partner an righted myself. at first he thought I was being silly an told me stop standing on one foot, and I said not being silly I just lost my balance.

and a lot of times my pain feels like someone has put a clamp onto the nerve and clamped down HARD. Very sharp, very severe. I'm able to stand at most less than 4 mins with out sharp pain and sensations of weakness. it's gotten to where I can't get comfy at night for bed sometimes cause it just hurts.

It's a big catch 22. I'm supposed to walk and be active, but that causes so much pain I am not able to walk or function very well.
