It took me a lot of experimenting, and a lot of money, to find out that the cheapest thing works best for me. The key is keeping up with it, and nipping it in the bud before it gets painful, for me. If I only washed my hair once or twice a week, I would be in tears every time the water hit it.

I had dermatologists recommend the cheapest and most basic products, as they tend to have the least amount of additives in them, makes sense. It's a fine balance between washing the hair often enough and not enough, I'm allergic to the salt in my sweat, that can be fun, going out dancing and not showering but crashing out, ouch. The funny thing (well not at the time) was they all thought I was showering too much and it interfered with the natural skin balance and this would cause the outbreaks ("Oh if you shower twice a day, you irritate the skin, interfere with the natural balance" - duh, after a workout, you just need a shower) so I tried not to and it got worse, oddly enough sea water and sun clear it up (and there is plenty of salt in the sea), first time I pack when I am off somewhere is shampoo and body lotion, so I know I don't run out or have to use stuff that doesn't agree with me and avoid switching brands. Fun at airports, though bought a bunch of clear plastic bottles and plastic zip-lock bags so I can take the lotion with me in the hand luggage, the dry air in planes and airports also makes it prone to break out.

It's quite strange, as redheads we seem to be really prone to allergies and such, though somebody told me with the whole neuro-dermatitis problems there comes a benefit, it seems to remove your risk of skin cancer, no clue why but so far not a single person suffering from it has been known to get skin cancer. I'm still using sun screen though, I don't want to turn into a lizard.
