I've been reading the boards a bit now, and I have noticed something. You kinky people don't seem to agree on much! If one says A, the next person along will say B.

Is there something you all agree on? Anything?

Most folks are rather fond of the concept of consent but it's not 100% universal. Otherwise, no. The only thing we have totally in common is that we all signed up for accounts here.

Sorry to break it to you, Suze, but Cheri cmailed me earlier to say how much she hated your OP. In general, as a Trotskyist, she hates the Marxist-Leninist authoritarianism and vanguardism that you bring to almost any discussion.

See, I wouldn't even agree with that. There are some utterly joyless people here who don't seem to enjoy doing this shit at *all* - they exist only to tell everyone else that we're doing it wrong...

Heh. Well, that's something *I* agree with, anyway. Sometimes it seems that the biggest and sharpest division on these boards is between the the fun-ists and the anti-fun-ists.

We can all agree we have to use what works for our own situation, whether or not it is what others view as correct. Rule number one about this lifestyle, there are no rules

Oh I think most of us regulars have more common ground than is immediately apparent.

  • we all have the internet
  • we are all members of CM
  • we all have some kind of interest in BDSM
  • we are all verbal, at least to some extent, else we would not be using a text based venue
  • we are all opinionated, at least to some extent, else we would not spend time airing our opinions on a public forum
  • most of us are here to learn, share our experiences, and help out where we can
This is basically a large online discussion group with various people who have BDSM in common. *That* is our common ground. From Leadership:

If you consider that these message boards represent an extremely diverse group of people coming from all sorts of different backgrounds and with all sorts of different goals in mind then it's not all that surprising there's little common ground. In fact, it'd be surprising if there were.

The practice of BDSM is just not one size fits all. It's far more find your bliss by discovering the uniqueness that is you and your relationship(s).

Though it may seem like we all disagree all the time, that's not true. Sometimes I agree with Leadership for instance, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I get him to see something from a new perspective, sometimes he does the same for me. Sometimes he types things that are so close to what I think I could have typed it myself, and he is not the only one.

Others regular posters I almost always disagree with, except when they are totally spot on.

And we don't just talk about BDSM, pretty much everything is up for grabs as a topic. On any given day you can find threads about food, pets, car troubles, politics, philosophy, the list goes on. We're like one huge extended (kinky) family all gathered in the great room for a holiday, with fifty different conversations going on, and every possible emotion being expressed.

Now, I'm going to go jack up the AC since it's going to be a hot one, and go finish supervising the brunch preparations, b/c we're not just kinky, we get hungry, too.

We agree that we are just like any other group of people anywhere, we all believe different things, we have different values, and different approaches.

Why would you expect something that in the history of mankind has never happened, that people are robots with only programmed thoughts?

And really, when you get down to it, that's why I'm here and if we all agreed then this would never happen and the site as a whole would be useless to me.

I think we can most likely all agree that if all we ever did was agree this would get really boring really quickly. And by "this" I mean..the forums, the lifestyle, the real world, and life in general.

Sitting around agreeing is masturbation. I don't need someone to tell me how right I am - I know how right I am (so right). I need different and unique viewpoints which challenge mine and allow me to see things I might have missed and hone my own conceptions. I think things we mostly agree on don't come up much because they're already settled - there's no need to discuss them for the same reason you hardly ever hear a cost-benefit analysis on the Holocaust; the agreement on the subject is so near-universal that belaboring the point is wasted effort.

We all have different desires, needs, beliefs. Just because we are kinky (with the exception of Leadership doubting his own) doesn't mean we all want the same things. However, in the end, we all want to be happy. On that, I'm sure most of us will agree.

Depending upon the individual........I have things in common with most people here. I just never expect to agree with, or be mostly like, any other single person. I wouldn't want to. I actually enjoy people that are very different than I. I like hearing opinions I cannot immediately 'get'. I like having things to think about.

A good debate is healthy.

That's sort of a tempting offer. Hmmm. Click on "Profile" and...oooo YUM! Make that very tempting. Oh oh, K.C. :( Darn.

Oh well, something for me and the bob to discuss later I guess.
