And no mention of guard dogs costing that fabled sum. I know, it came to you in a dream!

and i dunno what else they can expect. they've made it their business to screw others over for dollars; you think people aren't going to get sick of that?

My point was that a trained guard dog doesn't cost anywhere near that.

well if you read the article, you'd see that a guy did pay that much, and it was featured in the New York Times. do you know what people have paid for Tibetan Mastiffs? that much and beyond. depends on the dog and what a person is willing to pay.

The link is to page 3 of a 3 page article.  The dog is mentioned on both pages 1 and 2.  No dream involved...just a rush to judgement.

They overpaid. You can get a perfectly competent guard dog that will still be safe around the family for $10 to $20 K.

well most of the wealthy people in america are all about conspicuous consumption. sure they can get a dog for less, but they CAN get a dog for more, so they will. $230,000 for a dog and you've got humans trying to get by on $19,000 a year. pretty sad. but hey, this is america!

what got me is the phrase "private security".

of COURSE they're hiring private security! does anyone expect the publicly funded law enforcement agencies, or the military to provide security for these folks??

No your point was to rag on Hunkie.

Everything was there you just didn't look well enough.    Just because dogs can be had for much less doesn't mean this one did not sell for that amount.

Dude is great at selling and marketing.

People overpay for things all the time. The military pays $10,000 for a toilet you can buy at home depot for $50.

My experience has been that when people have more money than they know what to do with they hunt for the highest priced item not the lowest. They want to pay the exorbitant amount so they can say to you "see how rich I am???".

I have a few friends with money who actually do this. I will show them the exact same item for a fraction of the cost but they won't buy it. When I ask I usually get some kind or reasoning along the lines of "I won't shop there. That's for poor people".

Hey whatever. I'd rather save my money but whatever floats their boat.

Any wealthy person that is stupid enough to pay the better part of a quarter Mil for a dog wont be rich for long.

Weather it costs 10.00, or a million, a bullet stops a dog any day of the week.     Are wealthy people that gullible?

It's not just that they're gullible but it's about what can money buy that will flaunt how rich they are. This here story has given this rich person the attention he/she was looking for and really...that's what it's all about.

What??????  What the hell are you talking about????  How has Bill Gates screwed you?  How has Sam Walton screwed you?  How has the cardio-vascular surgeon screwed you?  How has the corporate tax attorney screwed you?  How did Henry Ford or any of his progeny screw you?  How did the Colgate family screw you?  How did the Ottis family of Ottis Elevator fame.....screw you?  How did the inventor of the Pet Rock or J.K. Rowling screw you?

Fucking typical.  You see successful people and it MAKES YOU SEETHE!!!  No one can live better than you unless they somehow hurt you or held you back to get what they have.

How many of you subscribe this bullshit?  This greedy, bitter, envious entitled bullshit!

Exactly, Hill!!!  Probably, in addition to being a guard dog, the dog has been trained to drive him home when he's had too much to drink.

Oh...coming from someone who has a male German shepherd, it isn't about teaching the dog to attack....it is all about teaching the dog who NOT to attack.

Thank goodness I've never been wealthy enough to have that desire, lol     I'm more of bargain basement kinda gal!   I read that article and the dollar amounts were staggering.  Sure would buy alot of sandwiches and milk for families forced to live out of their car.

You don't really have to teach shepherds to guard. Just make sure you show them lots of love and the rest comes naturally.

Yes...very true.  My next shepherd will be female.  My dog is big and crazy-smart but in his advancing years, he is getting a little freer with his teeth.  Still in all, they are a PHENOMENAL breed.

Umm, not really imo. John Lennon didnt have enough security, he thought he could walk down the street like everyone else does.

But it doesnt really matter if you have millions or are one paycheck from homeless, you run into the wrong person at the wrong time and you could wind up just as dead (especially since nearly anyone can get a gun in the US- are they still sold at Walmart?).

It is a violent, fuck-you-I'm-gonna-do-what-I-want society in the US no matter who you are, you could become a statistic.. But then you could be in a car accident too hit by a drunk driver.. Most people take precautions, they wear their seat belt, they get alarm systems installed, just if they have $$$, they can afford a little more & better security than most.

However, you still do not have to be rich (just middle class) to buy into a gated guarded community where the crime rate is lower, less pedophiles, etc...

Are you saying that cuz you arent uber rich that you dont think at times about violence and your own safety?
