I couldn't agree more. Half the deterrent of a dog is the noise. The other half is the fear that teeth might end up in your ass. Shotguns don't require one to be a marksman, and are easy to load and fire. We have two lab mixes. Neither is dangerous, but both make a lot of noise when they can't see you or get to you. The invader doesn't know they want to get to him to lick him to death, but that's ok.

Termyn8or -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 4:46:44 PM)

There is more to it than that Bamster, one has to be responsible. I traded off an assault rifle for a couple of pieces, because that thing would go through walls and I didn't want to hear about some kid getting killed by a stray bullet a couple of streets over.

I am happy with my wadcutters, snubbies and buckshot. If I need more, I would tend to think that I fucked up. This society does not belong to me exclusively. I will kill, and not lose a moment's sleep over it, but when I SQUEEZE that trigger, I know EXACTLY what I am doing.

I know what the world is like and what has happened as well as what will. I am not going to act irresponsibly even though I would welcome death. Because I care, just a little bit about others. Just enough. Barely. If I didn't I would simply take an axe to my natural gas line. You know what happens about an hour or so later ?

Underestimating me could be anyone's last mistake.

No way am I sleeping in a bed where someone has a gun under the pillow.  I know two women who have discharged them during the night.  I am not interested in getting shot.

I'm hoping that was a joke.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 5:20:58 PM)

What, the part about it being under the pillow?  No joke, that's where it was. I should add that when I go to sleep, I usually put it on my night stand.  It isn't very comfortable sleeping with a hard lump under the pillow.  Still, guns don't do any good if you can't find them in the middle of the night if you need them.
He is no stranger to guns himself, being a hunter.  The gun or its location was not what he was concerned about, he was concerned that I felt I needed it.  Again, I am just interested to know how many people also carry.

After two ex-wives, I have learned never to trust a woman with a gun in her hand - or under her pillow. I'd rather take my chances with a man who was a known axe-murder - he's less likely to attack me on impulse or "in a fit of passion" than the average woman.

For home defense. I have a cut-down Louisville slugger baseball bat which I had drilled out and loaded with lead. It can't go off by accident or while it's being cleaned.

slaveluci -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 6:25:43 PM)

I used to carry without a permit. For years, I regularly traveled out of my home state every weekend to go visit my ex-husband in prison. It was usually an 8 hr. drive or so each way. I was not about to go that far, alone, unprotected. I carried a small handgun in my glovebox and fortunately never had to use it.

I have described on here before about an attempted break-in when I was home alone. I had a bigger handgun in the house and pulled, ready to use it, before I decided no THING in the house was worth killing or dying for and fled the house with the gun and drove away to get help.

These days, we only keep a shotgun around. You don't have to be a great aim so, if awakened in the night by someone meaning harm, you just kinda aim and shoot. Also, unlike a high-powered rifle, it won't kill the neighbors next door by accident if I do have to shoot.......luci

TheHeretic -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 8:03:06 PM)

First off, if you are so concerned at home that you are doing what you describe, get a dog or two.  Never mind the whole instinctive fear thing, if nothing else at all, they make noise, and bad guys don't like that.  If you don't like dogs, get two of a hardy breed, and let them live outside (that will get the animal lovers in an uproar I suppose.  My dogs are part of the family, but I know responsible, respectable people whose dogs have never been in the house, and I won't brand them as evil for it)

Only very rarely do I carry a gun, or keep a loaded one close at hand.  On those occasions, the shotgun is mostly impractical.  By the time you bring it around from the driver's seat, the strange looking guy on the corner at a stoplight has already smashed the window, grabbed the seatbelt strap to restrain you, and stabbed you in the neck.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 8:14:17 PM)

I have three rather large dogs.  And they sleep in my bedroom also.

If you have three big dogs sleeping right close, and still feel a need to do what you are doing, then I'm thinking you might want to start talking with somebody about your fear issues.

Unless you are concerned they might turn on you in the night, in which case, it might be medication time (or stop/change/fix the medication time).

Cuffkinks -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 8:29:29 PM)

Been carrying for years. I also always have a gun in the night table when I go to bed.

Aynne88 -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 8:32:57 PM)

I have a rottweiler, Max, and a lab, AJ, I am also a woman home alone a lot in a nice house. I have right now in arms reach a fully loaded S&W .357 and in the kitchen drawer a .45. If someone breaks in with a gun, they can kill my dogs no problem. I also have at least 4 other guns here of the hunting variety and I can use all of them proficiently. I am not being robbed or raped, thanks. Nor am I going to feel guilty for exercising my rights. Oh..and I am a liberal, if that matters. In Maine, most of us usually carry. We grew up that way.

You really should figure out what you did wrong. You know, refine your technique or something.

Exactly Aynne. Add to that, I live on several acres with no nearby neighbors, and the only time I ever called the sheriff it took them 45 minutes to get there. Besides, human intruders aren't my only concern. I think I mentioned there are cougar and bears, and if a cougar gets in my horse paddock, I am not sending my dogs to be killed or maimed.

Yep. Crazy as this sounds, last summer I shot a 20 pound rabid groundhog with my .22 that was attempting to attack my animals and there are some people here that are my friends in real life that can vouch for seeing the pictures. It sucked and I didn't like doing it but no way in hell am I going to lose a pet to a rabid animal. We have a  ton of coydogs here too, which most of you know as coyotes probably and I will shoot them on sight as well. The only issue is it's against town ordinance to discharge a firearm in city limits but my neighbors are also of the mindset that they don't want rabid animals or even predatory ones around their kids or pets so they don't say much.

"I had a bigger handgun in the house and pulled, ready to use it, before I decided no THING in the house was worth killing or dying for and fled the house with the gun and drove away to get help. "

It's not a "THING". It is your fucking rights. Even if you don't have a pot to piss in nor a window to throw it out of, there is such a thing as your space. The invasion thereinto warrants death for the invader, and if you decide not to take that life, feel good that you have forgiven. But do not try to force anyone else to forgive such a trespass. Remember what happened to Jesus. He had it coming.

Holy shit I agree with you.

Especially a pump-action shot gun. There is something about that sound when a round is chambered.

I also like shot guns because unless you have loaded with slugs, you are less likely to have rounds go through walls.
