sometimes I wonder if some people sit awake at night, nursing their weapons (and semis!) just HOPING someone treads on their lawn or gives them another excuse to open fire!
As someone who held a firearms dealer license, I am used to handling guns - but the attitudes of many who possess them still concerns me at times.

"A well-armed society is a polite society" goes the adage - strangely, America isn't THAT polite...

i have to say i agree with you. =p
i grew up with guns and we had several run-ins with the criminal element, but i can't say i felt nervous enough to sleep with a gun right next to my bed. if i thought the likelihood of being attacked was high enough to warrant that, i'd do everything in my power to move.

knowing you have a gun isn't going to stop criminals from coming after you if they're really serious about it. they'll just bring more guns. no matter what the gun laws are, criminals will always have the upper hand because they're CRIMINALS and don't care about the law, regardless of how it reads. =p make a law allowing regular people to own any and everything they can think of, well the reeeeally bad criminals will do it times 10 AND bring all their friends with them. =p

wild animals, especially ones bigger than most dogs, i can understand, especially bears. they can kill a dog with one well-timed swipe with a paw. a gun might be the only thing to save if you there's a bad foraging season and bears are hungry enough to come into your house at night.

but i do think a good dog offers enough protection from the average criminal who just wants to pop in and steal electronics. =p yes, criminals can always shoot the dog, but if they've got a gun, and you've got a gun, you're not really ahead anyway. now you have to wonder who's the better shot, who's faster, what bullets does he have -- he probably doesn't care about penetrating your walls, either. haha
a lot of criminals have hollow-points these days...

BREAKING NEWS
Last night someone was killed by a vicious home invader
in other less sensational news
311 million people were NOT killed by a vicious home invader

But the deterrent affect is still there.

Bad guys don`t know that our pups are such sweethearts.

They see an unpredictable animal with a toothy end and they choose to move on.J

ust a dog barking sends fright/flight messages down the spine, for those up to no good.

Pretty much that, burglars want to go for an easy job, barking will tell them it's not going to be an easy job. Plus the friendliest dog will be protective if a member of his or her pack is threatened. My 2 Dobes are such low aggression dogs (the most dangerous thing about them is the wind they have), though if somebody would try to get into the house, 2 very deep voices going "WUFF WUFF GROWL" will send the message "Could be trouble - better not go there", they have such superior hearing and sense of smell, how would a burglar know if they are friendly or vicious? They know a property is guarded, they know the risk of being injured and caught is much higher, they might just move on to a house where there are no big pointy teeth are and where their attempts of burglary might not result in chunks of flesh missing.

I would think a recording of angry doggie barking/growling tripped by motion sensors outside would work pretty good too.. without being eaten out of house and home and the daily pooper scouping... lol

I don't feel threatened or nervous about anything in my neighborhood but you never know when some gun wielding maniac might come around shooting the place up.  I'm proficient with a variety of firearms so it would be illogical not to keep a handgun within reach or in my vehicle. In Florida you can have a loaded handgun in your vehicle if it's holstered or in a case or glove box or console, resident or nonresident, no carry permit required. A handgun should be standard equipment like a jack, road flares or a spare tire.

So.....uh.....how often has this happened to to you?

How often have you had a gun wielding maniac shoot up your place?

0ldhen -> RE: Who else carries? (8/16/2011 5:53:47 AM)

When I lived in the country, I carried a gun around the woods because we were having an issue with rabid animals.

Now, I do not own one, I live in small town USA, the Sheriff is a few houses down. Hell we still do not usually bother locking our doors.

I rarely carry, and when I do I am looking to make trouble. You got a problem with that just stay the fuck away from me. I don't shoot people for fucking my sinister or scratching my car, or taking my parking spot or even cranking up my stereo and blowing a tweeter. No stupid shit like that. The power of life nd death means more than these fucking toys.

In the last five years I have worn my sidearm about three times. I am EXTREMELY aware of it and make sure not to drink much or anything, I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS. You dan't take shit like this lightly. But I WILL kill if pressed. If I have to. With reason.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Who else carries? (8/16/2011 6:08:05 AM)

gah, you've reminded me of the year of rabid raccoons... that was an awful year.
one BIG one came right up into the yard and was going bananas, threatening the dogs, threatening everything. it was like classic Cujo rabies in raccoon form... sometimes a gun is the only way to handle them.

our sheriff was pretty lackadaisical, so having them in case we had to confront the barn robbers was pretty necessary. my grandpa or uncle would usually take a shot gun and go out and scare them off if they were still there, and then we'd call the sheriff, who'd go round them up at his leisure. =p so lame.
he was arrested at some point on connection with the meth problem, which just added to the uselessness and hilarity. =p

LOL, a friend who owns a pub recorded our dogs and did exactly that, instead of an alarm you hear dogs barking and growling, we just let them play tug of war with each other and a piece of rope, then played ball with them and made sure they were running over our wooden floor, so you hear the click click of the big claws on the floor, put it on the computer, looped it a bit, doesn't sound like 2 big dogs, sounds like a pack going mental and meaning business.

It's quite funny, when they opened the pub, they went for it because it's a lovely old building but the previous landlord had not so great clientel, politely telling the old customers to find another place didn't always work, sometimes there was a bit of friction and my Dobie girl sided up with the landlord (man who gives her the drip tray - must be friend), there was a bit of pushing and shoving, girl just barked, the guys just left. Ever since she even got a huge doggie bed there in front of one of the open fire places, since she has a brother that's even bigger than her the "undesirables" made no attempt to try and reclaim the pub - and we're not there all that often, maybe once or twice a week.

I have been carrying concealed for a couple of years, plus I always sleep with a gun on the nightstand, or under the pillow. I do it because I get threatened once in a while be ause of my job and because I live in a rural area with not much in the way of police protection, and lots of wild animals.

Anyway, the man i have been seeing found a gun under my pillow and expressed his concern about my paranoia. My feeling is, just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

I recognize this is a hot button issue with a lot of people, and I am hoping this thread doesn't take a nasty turn. In any case, who else carries and why?

No and hell no. I refuse to allow fear and paranoia rule me.

And seriously, that is how I read your post.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Who else carries? (8/16/2011 8:58:06 AM)

I don't carry. I used to occasionally when I lived in miami and had to work in some of the more scenic neighborhoods.

What lucky doggies you have, they have their own reserved doggie bed at the pub! [:)]

When i was a kid we had a tri-color border collie, he would walk us to the school bus stop and be there waiting for us when we were dropped off. Very loyal and smart too. One time we were all out at the barn milking cows and doing chores, we get back to the house to find the Priest there (he wanted to bless the house). He had been stuck inside waiting for an hour or two,.. he had no choice as he was trapped!.. our "guard" doggie let him into the house but wouldnt let him out! [:D]

So what's your point ?   Did you miss mine ?     It has certainly happened to others who were unprepared, and some who were prepared.     Which category would you fit into ?

Here in St Louis we had a 34 year old police officer wake up to two burglars ransacking his home. He pulled his trusty pistol and at a range of 8 feet fired 6 rounds….he missed with all six…I wonder where those 6 rounds went? Just lucky they did not kill another family member.

He was trained in the use of his weapon and still missed at point blank…what chance will you have?

I just don’t understand the love affair with useless handguns for home defense… I’ve a 12 gauge out of the reach of children with a gun lock and a box of birdshot…but I’ll guarantee you I would not miss at 8 feet.

Butch

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Who else carries? (8/16/2011 12:16:28 PM)

You make a good point about the handgun.  I like it for when I am in the woods hiking or riding or feel a desire to take a gun with me somewhere.  But I appreciate the suggestions about buying a shotgun, which I have been thinking about anyway.  I think I will do that this weekend..

Well, I bet you'll still miss at 8 feet. The shot doesn't have enough time to spread out. Now if it is a short barrel or a 'sawed-off' then we are talking now. You'll get some good short range spread.

As far as the cop, most cops couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. You don't have to be a good shot to be cop, nor do you have to qualify very often with your weapon (and its pretty easy to do so in most departments). Every summer I know it is qualifying time, cause there is a slew cops that show up to the range I go to. They only come that time of the year (frightening), and they suck. They like to think they are bad-ass, but they aren't. Last time I was there, the SWAT shooting instructor was there helping some of his buds out. I had my M4 and he had his. I out shot him at 100yrds with open sights and he was using optics. So, to answer your question, I will have a better chance.

worried about stray bullets? look into air freedom rounds by extreme shock. they won't penetrate much beyond a wall, and don't ricochet. They are the safest rounds to load in your home piece.
