Gas for $2

quote:

President Michele Bachmann has a promise: $2 gas.

“Under President Bachmann you will see gasoline come down below $2 a gallon again,“ Bachmann told a crowd Tuesday in South Carolina. “That will happen.“

1. The "that" which will happen is doubly impossible.  First, she is not going to get elected President.  Second, gas will not drop below $2/gallon, no matter who gets elected.

2. As some of the posters here claim, gas could be brought below $2/gallon easily.  But not painlessly, and definitely not using the free market principles Bachmann lives by.  Or at least professes.

It`s really a bunch of nonsense from people who`ve no clue how it works.

We don`t and can never make enough of our own oil to meet our own needs. The few more drops we can add to the mix won`t affect the price at all.We would have to pour Saudi Arabia amounts of oil into the market to lower demand enough to lower the pump-price.

And on top of that, all the oil we make, all the oil the Canadians produce,Mexico,Brazil, the middle east, all the oil anyone makes, all goes into a world market and fetches what the market price is per barrel, whatever that price is.

If we start producing more oil,it`s going to go into that same world market. It`s not going to be used exclusively here,as some sort of cheaper source and easy out of our oil problems. It doesn`t work that way.Plus, that American produced oil is going to cost roughly what the world market price for a barrel anyway and won`t do jack shit to lower the price at the pump.

shrub was right that we have an oil addiction.

The solution isn`t more and more. It`s to control your addiction and try to lessen it.

My gut feeling is the cons are going to promise cheap gas, oodles of new jobs, good weather, zero tax rates for millionairs and an actual resuraction of Ronald Reagen.

But the common denominator with all the cons, will be zero explanation as to how they will do all that good stuff.

How's about we make friends with Venezuela and a couple others down there and reduce transportation costs. Then address the speculator problem while we are at it.

CARACAS, Venezuela President Hugo Chavez announced Wednesday he is nationalizing Venezuela's gold mining industry and intends to bring home $11 billion in gold reserves currently held in U.S. and European banks. He said the recall of the gold reserves is intended to help protect this oil-producing country from the economic woes in the United States and Europe."We're going to start to bring back our gold to the Central Bank," Chavez said in a telephone call broadcast live on state television.

Is he taking the gold from the people of his country ? I mean like they did here. Is he or not ?

Currently held in US and European banks, after the way they treated him I'm surprised he even kept that much chump change in their banks this long. It seems he wants to close the account. I would do EXACTLY the same thing in his shoes. It is not an act of war, if it was we would have nuked at least 12 Asian countries by now. It seems that we have a problem with the governments of countries which act in their country's best interest. Damn fucking good that the US government doesn't do shit like that. Who knows what might happen you ourself. We would have to attack ourself under current foreign policy.

Im not saying he is wrong to do so.  But, with him withdrawing that much, it speaks to your post about being friends.

Oh, there goes Sanity, still believing its a 'supply' issue...... when its been an INVESTOR DEMAND problem all along.

Edwynn -> RE: Bachmann promises $2/gal Gas (8/20/2011 5:41:16 AM)

It actually is a supply issue to some extent, being that the oil companies have shut down 300 refineries in the US the last 30 years, some few being for good reason but the majority being for purpose of price control. OPEC had nothing to do with that, BTW.

So all this crap about more domestic production is completely fatuous in light of the fact that a likely consequence would be even further reduction in refining capacity, if recent history tells us anything.

But it would be correct also to point out that policies that ignore the economic benefits of reducing energy demand are not of the greatest help here, and feeding the inherent economic  inefficiency in all that.

The 2.8 l engine Audi A6 sold in Germany gets 37 MPG highway, the 2.0 l engine Audi A6 sold in the US gets 33 MPG  highway. (both gasoline engines)

Whut up with that?

PS

A country that keeps making Hummers and Mustangs and Cameros and Dodge Rams (10,000 lb. GVW) and other trucks with Hemi engines, then bitching about how imports are ruining the economy.

Yeah, THAT works.

$100 bet the average price of regular in the US falls below $2.00/gal by the end of 2012. Below $2.00 I win, $2.00-$2.25 no bet, >$2.25, you win. Bet settles by Paypal within a week of it falling below $2.00 or by Christmas 2012 (so you can have a nice bottle of wine with Christmas dinner). Price is based on AAA's daily fuel gauge report.

Its a testing standard difference. European tests are run with a leaner ECU fuel map, so identical cars will get better mileage in europe.

Noting that this prognostication comes without let or hinderance in terms of who is president, it fairly screams that we need no nutsuckers in government to get this done.

I don't follow, but you go BOY!!!!!

She's gonna make the world oil market drop back down to $30 a barrel?

Pretty easily - the moment US becomes serious about drilling here, investing into nuclear energy and telling piss-ants in the Middle East that they either play by our rules or they do not play at all the oil market will crash back to reality. Considering that China and India will be very happy with a $30 a barrel crude which  together with wahhabism (but no one seem to want to pay for that ) are the only exports from the Middle East, the choice of OPEC will be pump as much as possible at a lower price or face the uprisings we know which way that will go.

Not to mention that $50 a barrel would easily get gas below $2.00. We were at $1.66 a gallon less than 3 years ago. Why anybody thinks $2.00 is such a ridiculous claim has no fucking clue.

The 300 refinery shut downs occurred long before the current pres. administration, as did Enron's death-dealing intentional options market manipulation power plant shut downs in California.

Get a clue, bitch.

Edwynn's got it.

Wendy at Enron, Phil in the senate, and the CFMA of 2000.  Its been a casino in the energy futures market since.

Your hero, the sad little wet poodle E.D. couldnt slap his way put of a wet paper bag

The article I posted, these shutdowns are due exclusively to new EPA rules

You poor dumb asswipes are absolutely clueless, even with the facts spelled out right under your ignorant leftard noses
